To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

You up for petitioning for that with me? At least we’ll be doing more than whinging on MN about things we want to change.

Game on 😆 🤣 😂 😹

@Dangermoo

irrelevant. They’ll never have the same rights as humans

Who cares? I can think of a few people I'd have willingly stepped over to save my cat when I had him or my dog if I had one. Building on fire? Sorry BIL, you're a knob and my cat comes first.

Honestly, imagine what they could have achieved if they’d put the same energy into trying to resolve their (made up) issues as they do banging on about it on here!

FundingIssue · 17/05/2025 06:44

I always wonder what kind of people the ‘I prefer dogs to humans’ brigade are. Do they lack social skills? Do they know that they are humans too? If so, why do they dislike themselves so much? Are their family and friends (if they have any) all so objectionable that they prefer to hang around with canines instead?

It’s quite a sad state of affairs for them, and they must be quite isolated in society really, and lonely.

Feetinthegrass · 17/05/2025 07:22

I love dogs, but I agree op.

BinLordSeverustheMagnificent · 17/05/2025 07:35

Agreed. It totally off the scale now.

One of our offices at work now permits people to bring in their dog. It’s totally fucking ridiculous.

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 17/05/2025 08:21

@FundingIssue they are misanthropes. BIL/ partner is the same. “Prefers dogs to people” and funnily enough has fallen out with every friend she has ever had.

I feel for you.The unconditional love that only a dog can bring that you might never feel. Not letting you down, pretending to be your friend while stabbing you in the back etc. I don't dislike myself; instead I'm old enough to know that dogs won't falsely fill my life and make me feel secure having a lot of fake friends around me. Lonely with dogs? Nah. I would, however, feel isolated being amongst shallow tossers.

We have a lovely time chatting to other cult members during our daily worship (or dog walks as non members tend to call it). I can't believe the secret is out but as our membership grows so does the risk of discovery.

I'm not one of those people, though I love my dog very much. But I don't think it's difficult to imagine that lots and lots of people have been let down hugely by central people in their lives and have experienced unpleasant treatment from others around them. It's surely not that hard to understand how acanine companion who provides constant, unwavering adoration and loyalty, and is always overjoyed to see you, might compare very favourably with unkind humans?

Your post sounds like faux sympathy for this, as though you are actually looking down on people for having shit friends and awful families.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/05/2025 08:59

I don't dislike myself, I've realised how two faced many humans can be and want as little to do with them as possible. Animals aren't like that, especially dogs. Some humans are ok, the majority either aren't or I don't know them so can't form an opinion. As I said before, burning building (that old favourite in MN) and a choice between BIL and my cat and I'd step over BIL (and the rest of his family, they are all as bad) because he's an arsehole. If it was someone I loved, DH for example, then it would be completely different.

You’re being wilfully obtuse and facetious. They don’t mean they like dogs more than every person in the World including themself, they mean my dog is generally nicer than most people, which TBF is generally true. Most people are rude, ignorant and only care about themselves, so something that loves you more than itself ( a dog) is a lovely thing.

I’m popular, lots of friends, in demand at work etc, my dog is still up there in my top half dozen favourite “people” (quotation mark only for the loveless dog haters).

Typos!

I’m afraid I’m one of those people who takes their handbag chihuahua everywhere. He’s great and makes me and lots of other people very happy and I much prefer his company to anyone else’s. He’s quiet and often people don’t even notice him. And he brings so much joy to people. I actually have the opposite problem, that people, especially small kids, are always running up and wanting to touch and pester him in cafes and public spaces if he’s visible to them. Luckily he’s an absolute wonder with people and tolerates all the patting and ear pulling like a champ. I once had a woman literally shove her face up to his and try to snog him (complete stranger) and I had to tell her to back off because I could see his warning signs that he was not comfortable (and would you be if a stranger did that to you?!).

I’m sure I’ll have plenty of people disagree and think I’m the enemy here but I could be sitting next to you in a cafe right now with my snoozing pocket chihuahua and you probably haven’t even noticed him!

You are one of the people the op refers to.

he brings everyone so much joy !!??

no he doesn’t. Your friends are polite and probably like you so like your mutt in turn.

your attitude is the attitude causing the issues broadly.

Exactly. They wilfully ignore the other people who don’t want the dog running around, licking, jumping, nuzzling handbags etc.

Most people are rude, ignorant and only care about themselves.

Again, you are surrounding yourself with these people. The people I know, are kind, decent, don’t inconvenience others and go above and beyond to help others. As well as being fun and great company.

What utopian world is this; can anyone join?

FundingIssue · 17/05/2025 09:44

Ultimately, dog ownership is like being a parent in the sense that it is down to being a considerate person.

When my kids were little, I never let them wander up to people, cause havoc or run round restaurants. Never once did I assume that others would like them as much as I did.

Threads like this just make me appreciate good dog owners more. The woman I saw recently who was letting her large dog wander around the café whilst benignly telling everybody how friendly he was, is a bad dog owner. It made me appreciate the good owners who keep their dogs quietly under their chair or table when they are out.

In an ideal world, we would go back to the old days where dogs and people managed to coexist but in separate spaces. Where dogs were not allowed in cafés and eateries, other than some country pubs. And people did not take their dogs into all shops. I know that market forces means we will never go back to that day. But I think it is the lack of consideration by a new breed of dog owners that causes these regular number of threads.

I know there are decent dog owners around who keep their animals under control in public and I appreciate them. They are also rarely the one saying that dogs are better than people, because they respect humans too.

Nope, the world doesn't run like that. If that were the case, psychology wouldn't have evolved.

They are bad people in the world. Of course. Disgusting things happen every day. But I would not generalise and say that ‘people’ are dreadful. Because certainly the ones I meet in day to day life are definitely not, and it would be a disservice to them to say that about the human race. The people I know do a lot more good than bad and make the world a better place, yes even for dogs.

I can never understand why so many people say that other peoples dogs jump up at them. Are their pockets stuffed with sausages, or what?
For decades I’ve lived close to a big park where I’ve walked literally thousands of times, and where many dogs are always off the lead, and can honestly only recall at the most two instances of dogs jumping up at me.

I had a woman's Labrador puppy jump up on my bare legs once. Painful!
