To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

Giving dogs and cats ice cream and wine is the sign of a society in decline, just like in ancient Rome where a horse was made senator.

I think you need some wine TBH
And a dog.

I think it's a sign that these are my sort of people, not the uptight ones with a stick up their arse!

With my luck, the stick would already be covered in dog slobber.

I think manufacturers saw an opportunity to make money. People love their pets. I adore my cats, I am still not over the death of my one cat 4 years ago.

Each to their own though, I wouldn't be giving my cats cat wine but I do give -them some treats but not on a regular basis

Erm...basic hygiene issue.
And most people will at least cover their face or sneeze into a tissue. 😑

IME, no they won't. People are disgusting creatures and not many have basic hygiene and general manners.

SatsumaDog · 29/04/2025 12:46

Dog wine and icecream is just a bit of a fun way for people to treat their pets. People love to humanise their animals and businesses take advantage of that to make money out of them. Harmless fun imo, just like pup cups and doggie stockings st Christmas time. Personally I find it a bit daft, but if it makes people happy and it doesn’t harm the animal, then why not.

Where I do take issue is animals being taken to places their don’t enjoy or benefit from. Maybe some dogs don’t mind sitting in cafes or restaurants and when we were on holiday my parents did take our dog to pub gardens because you couldn’t leave them in a hot car. Shops, supermarkets, inside restaurants, no. It’s not for the benefit of the animal, just for their owners who don’t want to compromise their day to accommodate their pet.

I think there have always been selfish dog owners, it’s just that there are so many more of them now. They are as much of an irritation to other owners as they are to everyone else. Their pets are usually badly behaved, untrained and allowed to approach on lead dogs, which is a recipe for disaster all round.

i don’t dislike dogs. I love to see them out and about, running on the beach. Most are no bother and their owners responsible. It’s the rest that are a pita.

I'm well aware of that, but I'm pointing out that people love their pets and will give them treats as I occasionally do.

I've never owned dogs but I quite like them

Ah, that comment is a bit telling.

It seems its OK for the cult of cat to be worshipped.

People get funny about dogs on sofas in cafes, yet probably are fine with their cats on their kitchen counters at home.

😂😂😂

They’re clearly not content with policing dogs, now they’re patrolling threads too. Must be exhausting having that much free time. If pigeons, rats, and even hippos are wading into the chat, then a cat can absolutely strut in unbothered. Try not to choke on the furball!

I do like cats, but this is something that puts me off them. They scratch around in their litter box and then walk all over your kitchen surfaces. At least you can mostly (as there’s always an exception!) keep dogs off kitchen counters.

Not at all -have no opinion on cats -never owned or wanted to. Even if I did - no relevance to a thread about the tiresome cult of dog thst pervades public spaces.

Onleemoi · 29/04/2025 18:11

At least we’ve found one thing you don’t have an opinion on.

OonaStubbs · 29/04/2025 18:29

I'm not a big fan of cats but at least they keep to themselves and do not make a lot of noise. They also do not regularly hurt or kill people.

Iwantamoat · 29/04/2025 22:07

Owning a dog should be something people don’t embark on lightly. May I suggest:

  • Dog licenses with compulsory training for both animal and owner.
  • Registering the dog to an address and having the dog chipped.
  • All dogs to have compulsory insurance for medical care and injury compensation.
  • Mandatory that dogs should be kept on a lead and under control in all public places.
  • Acceptance that dogs are animals and therefore unpredictable no matter how well trained.
  • No dogs in eating places. It’s unhygienic.
  • No dogs in children’s play areas.
  • Dog wardens with the ability to issue substantial fines for anyone letting their dog foul in public places or be out of control. With outright bans on owning an animal in the future.
  • One strike and out policy for dogs that behave aggressively.
  • All dog breeds that have been recognised as bred for aggression banned.

If we accept as a society that it is a privilege and a big responsibility to own an animal and back this up with consequences in law, this will put off those that have a puppy for Christmas attitude…and hopefully there will be less sh*t on the streets…

Dog licenses never worked when they were a thing. Some people are landed with a dog after their owner dies. My grandad died, and my mum suddenly had a dog!
All dogs are already legally required to have a microchip. This has been a thing for years now.
It is already a thing that dogs be kept under control in public places. That does not mean on a lead. Good recall is enough.
No one with a dog thinks they are anything more than an animal. Humans are animals too, and are also very unpredictable.
Eateries allowing dogs is up to business owners. Dogs being allowed do not affect hygiene ratings. Otherwise we would be banning kids from all eateries too. Have you seen the mess they make?
I have never seen a children's play area that allowed dogs. People that take their dogs into them despite signs saying not to, are knobs.
Hardly anywhere has dog wardens anymore. There are already fines in place for people who dont pick up poo, but outright banning any wee/poo to start with is batshit, and impossible to police.
One strike and out meaning? Put to sleep? So that would be all the yappy chihuahuas then that want to attack anything bigger than them. And what do you mean by aggressively? Growling? Barking?

OonaStubbs · 29/04/2025 22:37

How is inheriting a dog after someone dies any different to inheriting a car after someone dies? You can't suddenly start driving it around if you don't have a licence or aren't willing to pay car tax, have insurance etc.

People tend not to be quite so fussy about a car’s wellbeing / who they sell the car to

You are comparing a pet to a car? 😂
A car does not need daily care and stimulation. You don't even need a license to have a car. You can leave it on your drive and let it rot.
A dog needs taking care of.

Onleemoi · 30/04/2025 07:02

Can’t liken pets to children. Can liken them to cars. The hypocrisy knows no bounds.

The one that lives next door to me doesn't keep himself. I can't leave my backdoor or downstairs windows open w/o him wandering in. I don't want to have to think about checking if someone else's pet is hiding in my house before I leave.
The local cats keep the garden birds out of my garden (I know birds are not people but it still makes me sad).

So start your own thread about cats

I understand it is about dogs, I was responding to the post which compared cats with dogs, which I don't think is irrelevant to the topic being discussed.

It's also quite common for threads to go off topic, MN is an informal platform.
