To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

I agree. The funniest is when you see dogs in prams who look desperate to get out and walk.

to be fair, they are usually in prams because they are elderly and can't do the full
walk. They are doing no harm and don't run up to people who don't want them near them or any other behaviour that has been mentioned on here.

I’m trying to figure out if there’s a hierarchy in these hypothetical situations. Do one’s own kids trump a stranger’s kid? Younger trump older? Do teens still count? Would your 18 year old nephew get saved before an unknown toddler or the other way round?

Exactly!

Not always. I know two people with young dogs, different breeds, who wheel their dogs round because they don't want them to get tired.

BuntyBeaufort · 27/04/2025 20:08

For those saying “Oh this again”, yes this again, because a lot of us are heartily sick of dogs and their selfish owners.
I just cling to the hope that in another 5-10 years the bulk of the lockdown mutts will be starting to move to the great kennel in the sky.

Onleemoi · 27/04/2025 20:19

And I cling to the hope that the same is true for the MN whingers.

Ownedbykitties · 27/04/2025 19:55

Exactly!

It's really simple.

  1. Kid you think will look after you in your old age.
  2. Kid you love the most
  3. Other kids that belong to you
  4. Kids that belong to other people
  5. Animal that you love
  6. Animals you don't love
  7. Inanimate objects.

😁

Inviting dogs into every space is the opposite of inclusive and diverse.

It discriminates against those who access spaces using service dogs.

It discriminates against those with allergies

It discriminates against those who can not be near dogs for religious/cultural reasons.

It discriminates against those with a phobia or fear of dogs or who have had traumatic experiences with dogs.

The only people who are "included" are those entitled and selfish enough to want to drag their dogs into inappropriate spaces.

Then take it up with the venue owners. Dog owners are simply existing in spaces that welcomes them. The entitlement it takes to demand that dog owners “stay away” from dog-friendly places because you don’t want them there is absolutely mind-blowing. If a venue says “dogs welcome”, then you should respect that.

It’s wild that people think they have the right to demand some backhanded deal with dog owners, telling them to stay away from dog-friendly places without the venue owners knowledge.

There’s also no consideration about what the venue owners want or the potential economic impact of excluding them or those who want to see some dogs. Nope it’s all about your wants, your needs, your allergies and your personal vendetta against furry pups.

Some dog owners on here even said they’d happily share and sit in a dog-designated area while you clutch your pearls in a no-dog zone. But that’s not good enough. You want the entire place purged for your comfort. So let’s be honest, who’s the truly selfish ones here?

And while we’re at it, some people seem to think these Mumsnet polls actually carry weight in the real world. In reality, business owners care about foot traffic and money, not a group chat of people moaning about dogs.

It has been really heartening on this thread that we have had measured and considerate posts by dog-lover/owners who are well-adjusted empathetic people and understand why the dog epidemic has gone bonkers. Those are the owners with normal family and friend relationships and a proportionate attitude to their animals and kindness and empathy to others around them.
It’s the vociferous minority who are unable to form relationships with other people and can only cope with dominance over a helpless animal who are the ones infesting inappropriate public places.

Reallyyyyyy · 28/04/2025 10:13

I'm a dog owner. The last place I would want to take them would be into town/shops and restaurants/libraries. I doubt they want to be there too!

rosemarble · 28/04/2025 11:24

Saw a little dog on a lead among the London marathon supporters yesterday. It was heaving. I really felt for the wee thing, at best it can't have been enjoying it, at worst it might have been scared and overwhelmed. I don't understand why you'd take your dog to something like that.

Also someone sat their dog on a seat on the Tube, while people were standing.

Firebird83 · 28/04/2025 12:18

All the “human” food for dogs is ridiculous. Dog ice cream, dog cupcakes, dog beer etc!

If you don't have a dog then they are not for you. You don't have to buy them. People buying them for their dogs does not impact you whatsoever.

StoneofDestiny · 28/04/2025 12:43

I agree - dog obsession has gone beyond the reasonable. Dog shit everywhere, but you never find a dog owner admitting to it being their dog - despite regular 'my dog has got out of the garden hours ago' posts on social media. Em - might it be their dog crap we are trying to avoid the ?
Dog owners letting their pet jump up at you with the owner saying 'it's saying hello'. Seriously - I don't want dog dirty feet or slabbed on my clothes!
Dogs in cafes - often being fed off the owners plate and barking in between bites of food. Now the National Trust has opened up properties to dogs - barking, dog crap and long leads blocking foot paths (despite them saying dogs should be on short leads). Yesterday - no less than 6 dogs in John Lewis with their owners letting them weave in and out of clothes rails - ugh. Pre dog greased clothes for sale.

Yeah, but I reckon it’s fair to be allowed an opinion. Lots of things don’t impact me directly, but I still have views on them, some positive, some negative. I don’t need any specialist knowledge to believe that frothy coffee substitutes for dogs are bloody ridiculous. But I’m not about to wrestle them off the poor animals. I think they’ve probably got enough to worry about.

Funnywonder · 28/04/2025 13:17

That’s all shades of wrong, but one of those people should have said something instead of standing there being all polite (like I would have too!) Maybe they didn’t want to sit where a dog had been.

I didn't see anyone look at the dog seat pondering whether to ask the owner to move it, it was marathon day and the standers were all excited and only going a few stops.
I wonder if it would be different on a regular commuting day.

I give it a year. Shops will start saying assistance dogs only.

You don’t think creating a societal culture of dog ice cream and dog beer and precious fur babies have equal rights to humans impacts anyone? Ok…

Dog ice cream and dog beer are treats. There is nothing wrong with treating our pets. If you think that is somehow treating them as "human" then your bar for what is human must be pretty low. Or are humans not allowed treats either?
My dog enjoying an ice cream is not impacting anyone at all.

NeedASafeSpace · 28/04/2025 15:16

I mean, my dog is literally in my back garden right now with a doggy ice cream. How that hell is that affecting anyone else? It isn't.

Mimilamore · 28/04/2025 17:30

Yup got right out of hand…. everything between here and the beach peed on, huge beasts with owners ill equipped to handle them.
My daughter has two dogs but does not expect everybody to be as fond of them as she is ( bit like your own children!)

My cat used to have cat wine, I think it was called Pawsecco. It didn’t hurt anyone. I presume we’re supposed to be a bunch of miserable gits, no treats allowed for anyone

OonaStubbs · 28/04/2025 20:44

Giving dogs and cats ice cream and wine is the sign of a society in decline, just like in ancient Rome where a horse was made senator.
