To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

I think the robot dogs will largely replace the old-fashioned dogs in coming years.

I think you're missing the point that it is getting to be the case that ALL cafes/libraries etc are dog friendly this excluding actual human beings who can't or don't want to be near bloody dogs.

It's also not fair on the staff. I used to work in a library, I'd have had to have left my job if they'd started letting pet dogs in. I can't remember ever having a guide dog come in when I worked there, but there probably was the odd one. But guide dogs don't bother people - they have a job to do it, they are well trained and get on with it.

I don't know if our local libraries allow pet dogs.

At least they won't poo and jump up at people and lick their faces.

LCHH123 · 27/04/2025 16:33

I get fed up with people letting their dogs bound up to me, then the dog jumps up and wipes its muddy paws all over my clothes. One time, I had a new cagoule on and the dog almost tore it with its claws. If I had a toddler with sticky jam all over their hands, imagine if I let them wipe them all over someone. “Sorry, he’s just being friendly.”

It just wouldn’t be acceptable, and it’s not acceptable for people to let their dogs do that either.

Whoarethoseguys · 27/04/2025 16:40

I agree I was in a small cafe last week.smd a dog jumped up and tried to lick my plate..The owner hardly seemed concerned!
But the worst thing is when.people compare dogs to children and even say their dog is more important than someone's child and given the choice they would save their dog before someone else's child.
That should never be the case even the nicest most lovable dog is less important than the most difficult child!

ShowMeTheSushi · 26/04/2025 19:40

I get your point, but the reality is that those who don’t own dogs either don’t mind them being there or simply choose to ignore them and continue with their lives, rather than becoming fixated on their presence. Some might even enjoy the chance to see a pup or two. Dog and cat cafes are popular international tourist hotspots for a reason. If dog-friendly spots weren’t in demand, they wouldn’t be thriving like they are.

What evidence do you have that most people don't care. That's not my experience at all. Everyone I have spoken to does care. We just don't shout about it or complain but it has certainly made life more difficult.

Onleemoi · 27/04/2025 16:51

Don’t complain!! 😂

OonaStubbs · 27/04/2025 17:01

Dog owners tend to get very upset when anyone criticises their dog. You can hardly blame normal people from being hesitant to say anything. But I think the tide is changing as more and more people are willing to speak out.

I would save my dog. The parents should save their child.

In a situation where you and only you could save a random child or your dog, you would save your dog and watch a child die?

There is no situation where this would happen. None. If a child is not with its parents, then why is it assumed I would even know it existed.

These hypothetical situations are bullshit., and the people who use them are even worse. Look after your own damn kids and you would not even be thinking about it.

Onleemoi · 27/04/2025 17:19

Why are we discussing stupid hypothetical scenarios? Who knows what anyone would do? I do prefer my dog to people I haven’t met though and I don’t think that’s odd.

Why did you feel the need to respond the way you did in the first place then if hypothetical situations are bullshit? Or is it only when someone points out how fucking unhinged that is that they suddenly become bullshit.

Onleemoi · 27/04/2025 17:24

If you’re going to double down on this being a reasonable question then I wouldn’t be watching anything happen to the kid, me and my dog would be busy getting as far away as possible from the danger.

Because people use this hypothetical question to single out who they deem as "psychopaths" and people who clearly value any dog over all kids.
It is never asked in good faith.

My dog is my family and is worth more to me than any person I do not know.

Which proves my point. People ask these things so they can attack other people with comments like "unhinged" over something that has not even happened, and will never happen.

This isn’t even about dog behaviour IMO. It’s about there being too many dogs in cafes and pubs. A couple of times recently, it’s been hard to get back to my table after placing a food order in a pub, because of dogs lying on the floor in the gangway making it difficult to move around.

The dogs weren’t behaving badly, they were just in the way.

Of course I would save my dog. What a ridiculous question! Why is your child my responsibility? How many random kids have you saved? “Watching a child die?” Only someone unhinged could think that.🙄

This. It’s years since I had a dog but my cat definitely meant more to me than someone I don’t know. To be honest he meant more to me than some people I do know - I’d have absolutely stepped over my BIL to rescue my cat! When we were warned we might have to evacuate our street because of flooding I didn’t worry about anyone else, I made sure I had the cat's belongings in my car! The neighbours could fend for themselves, he couldn’t.

ETA in the event of a fire I wouldn’t have been watching anyone die, I’d have been getting out with my cat or dog.

Glitchymn1 · 27/04/2025 18:48

@PerimenopausalWildEyedHarridan Sorry I’d save my dog, possibly attempt both acts of bravery in this very strange scenario you’ve created where it’s a random kid or my or in fact any animal or person- I’ll get em
all. 🙄 Unless the fumes get me.

Onleemoi · 27/04/2025 18:56

I’m trying to figure out if there’s a hierarchy in these hypothetical situations. Do one’s own kids trump a stranger’s kid? Younger trump older? Do teens still count? Would your 18 year old nephew get saved before an unknown toddler or the other way round?

threenaancurrywhore · 27/04/2025 19:08

On the hypothetical “dog or child?” death rescue situation, the park near me is strictly on-lead only. It also has a high, old wall and some arched exits directly onto a road. I was walking on the pavement opposite, toddler in hand, when a dog off-lead comes escaping from the archway sprinting up the road – causing one car to swerve and another emergency stop. Woman finally emerges chasing her dog and, once she’s caught him and berated the drivers for not getting out to wrangle HER dog, turned on ME: “Why didn’t you catch him?! He could have been killed!” Carried on bellowing at me over her shoulder as she carried it away.

The fact I had a toddler to handle seemed to escape her: was I supposed to hope he’d stay put alone on the pavement while I ran out into traffic? Or would she have preferred I drag him into traffic with me to rescue her dog?

Anyway, outcome: thankfully no drivers or pedestrians hurt, dog unhurt as a bonus, but I would 100% have stood by and watched it get run over in favour of looking after my kid. Still astonishes me that she expected otherwise! (Not to mention: follow the bloody rules, put your dog on a lead. Especially in a park that opens directly onto traffic, double especially if it’s got such shit recall.)
