To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

@mumda - if it's a KS then your duvet should actually fit properly in the cover now. 😁

It's only taken me til retirement to discover this fact...

Cheap nappy bags are great for picking up dog poo, particularly from your garden. Large than poo bags, smell nicer, cheaper and can be tied-up easier

Also great for time of the month and wrapping up pads if out and about out

Freeze half a bottle for school then top up with water. A full bottle of ice means they have nothing to drink until lunch time.

Even better, fill it and freezer it horizontally so you get a block of ice lengthwise in the bottle- then top up with water! Genius!

D-Mannose supplements for UTI prevention. I used to get UTIs all the time and once started a thread at 3am when I was miserable and suffering. An angel of a poster recommended them, and now I take them after sex or on days when I know I haven’t had enough to drink or peed often enough, and I haven’t had one since.

Can I ask the dosage, please and where you get them from? Getting desperate! Thanks!

Also Mounjaro for me! Despite having a very high BMI, it just never entered my mind as a possibility until I read a thread on here and a switch flipped in my head. Truly life changing.

Can I ask how much you’ve lost? I would love another stone off.

That green peppers taste like shite because they are not ripe? And peppers go through green to yellow to red as they ripen. It was brand new information to me and I've not bought a horrible
green pepper since!

I love green peppers! I like the sharp, fresh taste.

I'm so glad we have a single quilt each on our KS bed!

LoobyLott · 22/04/2025 22:35

I can tell you what the most UNHELPFUL piece of advice was

I found a kid had used crayons on the wall and wanted to remove without damaging the paint as we were living in a rental.

Someone suggested "hair spray" which is a known fixer for art projects, so would have made the crayon impossible to remove, rather than remove it.

What an arse.

Wirarpa knickers. Brilliant!

I discovered those early on in my weight loss journey, often on offer on Amazon. They’re BRILLIANT! Last time, I bought the size down, now the right size. Love them.

@marmiteandminticecream Yes. Apparently if you have a KS or over bed then the duvet SHOULD have the seams running across the bed. I had always just assumed that any size of duvet had the stitching running from head to foot - but apparently not. Apparently on a single or double bed then the duvet should have the long side going down the bed - but on KS and over then the longest side of the duvet goes horizontally across the bed.

I've read your posts about the duvet being the wrong way and I have NO idea what you are talking about.

Why is it so difficult to work out how the duvet goes in to its cover? My duvets don't have seams "running across the bed" whatever that means. I've never had a problem (superking size bed)

So many things. Just really appreciate the whole site. Education, FWR, baby advice, elderly parents.

Hairspray works on biro on leather sofas

A poster recommended the Aircraft scrubber, it’s brilliant for bathroom/kitchen tiles, totally renovated my alloys, does my textured laminate, in fact, the only thing that works bar hand scrubbing! Laminate is an absolute trauma to clean with multiple dogs. It lasts for a 20x10 kitchen, ruddy hard work, but so worth it.

Leafy3 · 22/04/2025 22:44

I haven't read all 5 pages of the thread yet, but I ordered some sew-in name labels except instead of names they say:
Single
Double
King
Super-King

I stitch them onto the bottom corner of each sheet & duvet cover (underside/inside) same corner for each item which means I always know which way around they go and I know what size sheet I'm pulling out.

Terrapinn · 22/04/2025 22:46

Put them on an 'information diet' - part of grey rock.

Dont hand them the bullets to shoot you with.

Never "JADE" your own feelings or decisions - no need to Justify, Argue, Defend or Explain yourself to others or yourself!

We are not a rehab facility for deficent men.

Strategic incompetence.

Attempts to tolerate bad behaviour due to poor mental health - "Might explain it, never excuses it"

Alongside the 'fanny gallops' mentioned earlier - 'fanny snapped shut'

New one for me is when the 'cocklodger' is also looking for a 'nanny with a fanny' to look after his DCs from another RS.

You can tell I have spent years on the Relationships board.

Mumsnet made me buy a dehumidifier and it changed my life.

Same. I heart my Meaco!

ThinWomansBrain · 22/04/2025 22:50

Simple Protect ‘n’ Glow Radiance booster SPF 30 - I've been using it for about three years now.

More recently someone recommended a rubberised basecoat nail varnish that I really like.

I am fairly new to MN & so far its when I read the phrase ' What someone else thinks about me is not my business' Although I believe it's important in many areas of life I have adopted it for people who I know I haven't upset etc but they just feel like being nasty or ghosting me & it really helps.

Fillybuster · 22/04/2025 22:53

Not had time to RTWT, so apologies if this has already been listed. But amongst all the amazing, life enhancing advice I’ve had on MN, the standout is probably still explaining how babygro vests are designed to be taken off by pulling them down as well as over the head. All future poo-nami and generic leakage moments with dc1 (then about 4 months old) and dcs2&3 were an entirely different story!

yes, it's a really useful one.

How big's your lawn if it's done in 4 hours? DO you have to stop it to empty the grass? My lawn can fill the brown bin in no time flat!

Hi you don’t empty it. There’s nothing to empty. It cuts the top of it at a cm at a time etc. you just let it loose once a week and it keeps it to same height. Don’t have to catch up any of the cuttings.

Silsatrip · 22/04/2025 22:59
  1. Mooncup / menstrual cup- first saw mentioned here, on my 3rd one now (they last for years)
  1. Keep duvet sets and sheets folded in pillow case from the set to keep it altogether.
  1. Random hairs sprouting on your chin is unfortunately normal from late 30's (not something I ever discussed with friends but good to know I'm not alone!)

Steaming kills flea eggs (sorry to lower the tone). But when your cat has picked them up and you suddenly have an infestation and nasty chemicals are not doing the job using the steamer on all the floor cracks makes such a huge immediate difference! I’ve passed this tip on to at least three people who were immensely grateful once they’d tried it.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/04/2025 23:07

When my favourite white linen top turned yellow due to sun cream, I was advised to soak it in washing up liquid and white vinegar. It worked!
