To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

So this quilt thing. Why? ( We have just turned the duvet)

Glueear17 · 22/04/2025 21:39

@Hatty65 you have changed my life!

keepingonrunning · 22/04/2025 21:41

Another idea on the topic of duvets - buy one size larger than your bed size for plenty of overhang.

Someone on a thread said they'd asked chatgpt what her colours where

I headed upstairs and did the same thing

I'm a cool summer,I've binned so many 'wrong' colours (shoved in a pile for the charity shop) and am only buying 'my' colours (from vinted)

It's changed my whole wardrobe

I've always been sweaty-since I was a teenager,but it's got worse as I've got older

Someone said to switch to soap as shower gel just smears the BO germs about but soap kills them

Game changer-within a week,I was less sweaty and much fresher through my day

I passed on the baby vest tip to ds when my gd was a baby

He looked at me like I was mental

'She's tiny, just look at how tiny she is!she won't do massive shits!'

I got the text about a week later to say I was right...

The soap instead of shower gel was mine too, could not believe what a difference that made. Also, way cheaper, a bar of soap lasts ages. Even the nicer stuff.

Peppermint tea for stomach problems. The second I feel myself getting gassy, nauseous or bloated, I have a mug and it’s never failed to help.

That grouting pens are amazing for quickly making your bathroom look better and are very therapeutic to apply. It's a very zen experience with pleasing visual results. And lasts quite a long time.

Would they count as cleaning or proper maintenance? Basically, I want to know if I can do it as a tenant, one who is extremely bad at all DIY. All my attempts to clean the grout have failed.

To be freed from trying to please this incredibly jealous and nasty woman who judged me and dh, constantly put us down and made every family occasion a misery. Who came into my life because of the man I fell in love with ...mil

It didn't take one post and the your not listening to us and acting immediately trolls but many years and many wonderful posters who helped me.

When it first happened I was so naive I thought it was me. And whilst yes she definitely doesn't like me I also have the wider picture that actually it's very common and they all seem a similar type. Eg my way or the highway and not respecting boundaries

It can apparently cause acid reflux though so not good for people whose indigestion/wind is caused by acid.
I use fennel tea, but don't find it that great.

Am also not totally impressed with the ChatGPT on colours - am going to try again tomorrow with a photo taken in daylight. I always thought I was cool toned but maybe skin tone can change with age and I'm becoming warmer as I get older.

That you are always dispensable at work, but your family can't replace you.

Heard it when young & saw it first hand with my manager. She passed & they replaced her quick as a whip. It's been a great thing to remember as my current job pays rubbish but they put a lot of pressure on you to perform & don't train you properly. I don't pay any heed to the pressure or let it stress me. I just do what I can & go home.

@murasaki what is the golden pen and how does it all work?

BigRenoLittleBudget · 22/04/2025 21:56

I have learnt an almost embarrassing amount of things from mumsnet I don’t even know where to start!

I have also had some great advice.. At our last house we wanted to get some renovations done but couldn’t afford an architect and several very nice posters talked through various options with me and in the end someone suggested a layout that worked well and we went ahead with. Whenever someone said oh I love the new layout I’d say “thanks, a random stranger on mumsnet designed it for me” 😂

I’ve got to the point now that whenever I’m googling pretty much anything I will often type “mumsnet” into the search with it eg.

“mumsnet how to remove nail varnish from carpet”

“mumsnet can you air fry pastries”

“mumsnet how to put up wall panelling” etc etc

I have also asked folk on mumsnet for their views on numerous topics over the years including helping me to decide my children’s names and deciding whether to have a third child 😂 it’s not just that people give good advice (they do). Often it really helps to discuss things with someone else without any judgement or potential consequences of speaking about it with people you know in real life.

Someone very wise once posted the following

‘before you diagnose yourself with a depression, look around you, are the people around you being arseholes?’

I have never come across anyone trying to peel an avocado 😂

I peel an avocado if I want smooth perfect slices.

Storage of bed linen. Put the correct-size sheet, duvet cover and pillow case(s) inside one of the pillowcases. When a bed needs changed, just grab the complete set out the airing cupboard. It was revolutionary for me - no more rummaging through bedsheets trying to find the right size!

I do this.

I'm a tenant and do it as cleaning for the same reasons. The landlady really didn't get good people in to do the bathroom, and it works for me and her on inspections. Clean to the best of your ability, let dry, then go for it.

Hatty65 · 22/04/2025 22:09

I can't tag everyone who has commented on not knowing that on a KS bed the longest side of the duvet should lie horizontally - not vertically - across the bed, but Gosh, you've all cheered me up immensely! I'm glad I'm not the only person not to have known this. And happy to have passed the knowledge on to others.

Yes, the 'empty' flappy bits of duvet cover were immensely irritating (for 30 odd years). I don't know why I didn't realise that I had my duvet the wrong way in the cover. I simply assumed duvets (and beds) were all longer on the headboard to footboard side rather than across the way!

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 22/04/2025 22:10

Rather than trying to pour hot fat away after cooking, using a piece of kitchen roll to absorb it out of the pan and just binning it (I do mean the odd spoonful, not a whole chip pan!)

Hatty65 · 22/04/2025 22:13

@mumda Have you turned the duvet sideways inside the cover? ie the longest side of the duvet goes horizontally across the bed, but the duvet cover should still have the buttons/poppers at the foot of the bed on a KS bed.

Don't just twizzle the whole duvet and cover sideways.

SunshineAndFizz · 22/04/2025 22:14

Hatty65 · 22/04/2025 16:00

The one that sticks out for me is someone helpfully pointing out that if you have a king size or super king bed then the duvet goes ACROSS the bed horizontally, rather than vertically (if that makes sense).

I am ashamed to admit I've spent roughly 30 years with a superking bed, assuming that the stitching on the duvet ran from head to foot and grumbling that my duvet never fitted properly inside the cover.

Turning the duvet 90 degrees inside it's cover was life changing!

OMG I only recently discovered this.

Yes inner out , rotated and put back in.

Just a bit early to go to bed to see if I can tell the difference.

TheWorminLabyrinth · 22/04/2025 17:53

OP, can I ask how you managed to get tret? I've done the "consultations" on skin + me, and also on Dermatica, but they never seem to tell you what you are getting - skin + me just says "your daily dose" - so how do you know it is tret you are getting? Sorry to derail.

Buy it if you go abroad. Much cheaper. I buy loads and give it to my friends for birthday presents.

@murasaki what is the golden pen and how does it all work?

Sorry, do you mean the golden dose in the mounjaro pen which is basically a 5th dose when it tells you you have 4, so don't throw it away after 4, saves money ! Or the grouting pen, which is like a tippex pen to make your bathroom grouting white again.

And also for meal plans. Tell it how many days, any dietary requirements or preferences, and what sort of thing you want (e.g., family meals, low fat, quick and easy, impressive, etc) and it'll suggest a menu.

I read this and immediately did it, such a good idea! It even gave me tips to make the meals toddler friendly. I don't know why I never thought of it before. Thank you MugsyBalonz, I hate trying to think of new things to make, I'm doing this all the time now
