Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

With 3 children, I would be up well past midnight on Christmas Eve, wrapping presents. Someone suggested buying cloth sacks that close with a drawstring (found on Amazon). They are available in traditional Christmas colours as well as other designs/patterns. What took me hours now only takes me about 15 minutes! And I re-use them every year. I affixed simple brown paper tags to the drawstrings with each kid’s name, and have a variety of sizes.

I actually got so many other ideas from this site. Coverless duvets - a life changer. Robot vacuum - I’ve got 3, I’m on my 3rd version of the robot mower. Latest guy you just charge him up and set him down on the lawn and 4 hours later it’s perfect, no boundary wires or anything.

@IBelieveinSomething which robot vacuums and mowers do you recommend?

But isn’t half the fun the anticipation, unwrapping every present ?

Why is a whole duvet easier to wash and dry than a cover and sheets? Surely it bulks up the machine and takes longer to dry?

Because sheets tangle up on themselves more and need ironing to look good.

I've never ironed sheets. They come out of the tumble dryer nice and smooth. I still think a whole duvet would be more to wash and dry than any sheets.

Those pins to keep a king sized duvet in place inside the cover.

To use a spoon not a knife to remove avocado stones and also the flesh from the skin rather than trying to peel it. Saved me from many middle class injuries since I found that one as I am clumsy and on blood thinners.

And it takes about a fortnight to stop bleeding!!

Crikeyalmighty · 23/04/2025 21:59

@GeorgeMichaelsCat yep I use that packet mash all the time, even in cottage pies- add a bit of white pepper and a knob of butter - it’s great.

The one that sticks out for me is someone helpfully pointing out that if you have a king size or super king bed then the duvet goes ACROSS the bed horizontally, rather than vertically (if that makes sense).

I am ashamed to admit I've spent roughly 30 years with a superking bed, assuming that the stitching on the duvet ran from head to foot and grumbling that my duvet never fitted properly inside the cover.

Turning the duvet 90 degrees inside it's cover was life changing!

OMG. Does it?? Must try that

I have 3 laresar robot vacuums. They vacuum and mop and suit my house. They’ll not last forever but weren’t massively expensive. £135 at the minute. They emailed me and gave me one free as they were bringing out new one and i sent in a review.
I’ve had a few lawnmaster robot mowers. Previous one had a docking station and needed to have wires installed all round periphery. It was a bit of a pain. Couldn’t make its way home to docking station no matter what I did. Latest one is better also a lawnmaster much smaller model. No docking station or periphery wires. I just charge the battery each use. It knows the periphery by sensing lack of grass. It is great. Also wasn’t very expensive. I think, maybe 140 or so.

The most helpful advice i've had was from Xenia on the legal board a few years ago, she probably wont see this but on the off chance she does thank you again!

SparklyGlitterballs · 23/04/2025 12:22

One thing I've read, and wished I'd known about it years ago, is to set up an email account when a child or grandchild is born. Over the years, send it snippets of information, photos, memories etc. then when the child reaches 18, hand them the access to the email so they can look back at a "scrapbook" of their childhood from birth to coming of age.

Call me a cynic, but I'd advise against that. You're effectively putting all sorts of personal information in one internet-based system. Even if you trust the email provider to keep your emails private and never allow them to be scraped, it's so hackable.

Surely more personal to start a scrap book or memory box for them instead, filled with letters, memories & keepsakes.

What do you mean, breathing out poos?

Maybe she means like giving birth ie: breathing to get it out? 😕

I am having childhood flashbacks to bread and dripping now....Probably not in favour on MN but to us it was food of the gods!

My Mum would save the fat and jelly from things and use them to add flavour to many dishes. No bones were ever wasted, they were boiled to make fabulous stock.

I adore dripping! Don't have it more than twice a year but always at Christmas when my siblings and I still scrap over the turkey dripping lol And if I cooked a proper joint of beef.

Served on hot toast with the tiniest sprinkle of salt on top - delicious!

It was lawnmaster drop and go. More like £300.

I had no idea it was normal to include a receipt when buying someone a birthday or Christmas gift, and to openly encourage the recipient to return the item or sell it on if they don’t like it! No more terrible presents from me, all thanks to Mumsnet!

Trapunt0 · 23/04/2025 22:27

I have a normal double but shared it with a duvet thief so put a king size duvet on it, problem solved

They look nice but would get boring year after year I think. Part of the fun of Christmas is choosing new paper, I get a few rolls and wrap everyone's in different designs sometimes. And also having a pile of wrapped gifts, more exciting for DC I think!

I'm also up late every year but I put a film or carols on and enjoy it with wine and mince pies.

Feels odd talking about this in April!!

Not to be scared of investing or think it is only for wealthy people and to go ahead and open a Stocks and Shares ISA. Five years on it's been a great decision for my long term savings.

Use my quick spray mop to clean kitchen cupboards and bathroom tiles really quickly and easily. Just spray, mop the tiled walls/cabinets and then put the cloth in the wash. I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier!

Since Trump got in I think everyone should be hugely wary of investing.
