To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

Another one that was a life saver. Last minute wrapping of DCs Christmas presents late on Christmas Eve and I realised I had bought very little for DD compared to her brother. Shops were closed and I was despairing. So many great ideas. Best one was to make a voucher for an activity or day out. I made one for a series of horse riding lessons. Found a very cute illustration online of a girl that looked like DD with a pony and found some pretty craft card to stick it on. Remember hoping DC wouldn't wake up as very noisy printer cranked into life at about 4am. It was her best present and still remembered to this day.

This is adorable !

I uploaded a photo where I was wearing make up. I was surprised by the answer so tried a second photo just taken in natural light with no make up and got the same outcome.

Interestingly, I do have a dress in one of the colours recommended and have received lots of compliments on it so maybe it is right…

Thanks, that sounds like a good belts and braces approach, I shall give it a go tomorrow!

The one that sticks out for me is someone helpfully pointing out that if you have a king size or super king bed then the duvet goes ACROSS the bed horizontally, rather than vertically (if that makes sense).

I am ashamed to admit I've spent roughly 30 years with a superking bed, assuming that the stitching on the duvet ran from head to foot and grumbling that my duvet never fitted properly inside the cover.

Turning the duvet 90 degrees inside it's cover was life changing!

Buy socks in large batches of identical socks so they all match. It saves time not having to match up your socks once they’re washed and dried!

Edited

I went one further and bought just packs of black and packs of white sports socks for my teenage boys then left the single socks in a basket in the airing cupboard for them to root through each day. Not only did I not have to match them up, I didn’t see the clean pairs lying on the bedroom floors for weeks!

Cut dishwasher tablets in half. I learnt that here when someone said it does just as good a job, fewer chemicals and saves money

I've found so many things helpful but now can't think what they are 😄. And like a previous posted I prefer searching mumsnet to Google as you get some brilliant viewpoints

When making a white sauce, don't bother making a roux just to break it down, just put the butter, milk and flour in at the same time and whisk. Much easier.

Sod you, MrsM, home ec teacher in the 90s. This is easier and works every time.

The gradual retreat for baby sleep
Paid for vaccinations being cheaper than the leave to look after the child/activities you may have to cancel, if you can get the cash together for the vaccination.

One that I have done without seeing it recommended anywhere: you know exactly how many milk teeth your child has. If you can spare the cash, get all the coins you will need now and put them in a jar out of sight. (I have also given this as a tooth fairy bank as a new parent gift when the parents were the kind of people who already have everything.)

Absolutely brilliant!

@BrokenTeapots That is such good advice. My beloved DM lived on the coast and we ate all the lobster and other seafood we could get. Rather than put the detritus in the bin and let it fester in the hot summer, she would freeze it all. And, if she forgot one week to put it out, no matter, as long as there was space in the freezer.

That's a good one! My grandma told me to freeze one portion whenever I cooked so there was always back up food available.

I heard a great one from a colleague about travelling with a baby, to order nappies click and collect to the Boots inside the airport (past security) so I wouldn't have to worry about fitting them in the suitcase!

Coverless duvets! So easy to wash and dry, and no more wrangling with duvet covers.

CharlotteBakewell · 23/04/2025 16:16

I’m another Chat GPT fan.

I’ve ask the question about new workwear, gave my size, problem areas, height etc and it’s come back with loads of fab suggestions. I also asked on here but the Style & Beauty board is pretty quiet.

I’ve also asked about various work related issues, it was like having my own personal therapist.

Hang washing to dry on hangers. They can go on the arms of a rotary airer outside, straight into wardrobe when dry and no faffing with pegs. I have an instahanger indoors to dry clothes in winter or on wet days.

And also for meal plans. Tell it how many days, any dietary requirements or preferences, and what sort of thing you want (e.g., family meals, low fat, quick and easy, impressive, etc) and it'll suggest a menu.

Oh my god you have literally just changed my life! I've now got a shopping list and meal plan for next week with no more than 15 min prep per meal, all freezable and from Pinch of Nom website as I am trying to be healthy! Thankyou so so much!

Newmumburnout · 23/04/2025 15:08

Can you elaborate? This sounds interesting. Do you just use a fitted sheet and a bedspread with no duvet ?

Not my post, but this is also my preferred bedding too. Looks so so much nicer as well.

In the winter I have a top sheet, duvet and then the quilted bedspread. During summer just the top sheet and bedspread. I've a few so I rotate, and love how my bed looks magazine-photoshoot-ready everyday.

Soolantra for acne rosacea. Disbelieving GP said "It's off label use" so I made sure I wrote to say "Please take me off the antibiotics as soolantra means I no longer need them."

A handle that you put into the frame of the car when the car door is open. You can put loads of weight on it, helps my dad to heave himself out when his knee is painful.

I like the recommendations for new decluttering ways. I've been going for years but finally, having no one in the house under 10, and having got rid of half our stuff, most of the house is reasonable most of the time.

When using your chamber pot at night don’t put it back under the bed immediately as the steam rising from it can rust the bed springs.

In your opinion is the free one useful enough?

@murasaki, @GalacticTowelMaster,
Not sure which of you had the issue with the sheets pinging off, but I've just brought 100% Egyptian cotton fitted sheets from dorma. Suitable for deep mattresses and elasticated all the way round. Pricey but I was do impressed and they have a 10 year guarantee

That’s the only one I’ve used. Sometimes it tells me I’ve used my quota of questions and to come back a few hours later. I can generally ask away though, give the free one a try and go from there. It’s bloody awesome.
