Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

God there was a lot of pointless additional information in that post.

No, dogs licking plates isn’t going to kill anyone. Just apologise and next time they’re round scrape left overs into the dog bowl. They don’t need to know what you do the rest of the time.

I am a huge dog lover but that's grim. I wouldn't want to eat anything at your house either!

tilypu · 21/04/2025 15:15

It wouldn't bother me - as you say they are going to be washed, and dog saliva will wash off much easier than, say, oils and fats that the food might contain or be cooked in - so there's no hygiene issue imo.

However, some people would have a massive issue with it - and for that reason if I was you, I would wait until guests had gone until doing it.

Martymcfly24 · 21/04/2025 15:16

Disgusting.

Could not eat in your house ever again .

VicksJunkie · 21/04/2025 15:16

Grim as fuck.

TeenLifeMum · 21/04/2025 15:17

I’m a dog person and have occasionally allowed ddog to do this but never in front of guests. It’s a bit gross even though logic tells you it’ll be cleaned.

thisfilmisboring123 · 21/04/2025 15:17

Grim, grim, grim!

Why?? Just scrape it into the dogs bowl. Takes 2 secs

Kaleidoscopic101 · 21/04/2025 15:17

You're right, the dishwasher will obliterate any germs at that temperature. It's absolutely fine germ-wise. They say you can actually put a toilet brush in a dishwasher, I have not done this myself but there we are.

Social acceptance-wise I can see how someone might find this a bit low but DIL totally overacted imo.

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2025 15:17

It won't kill anyone and yes the plates are going to be washed at high temp but I wouldn't do it and I have pretty low standards
I don't wash the dog bowls in the dishwasher either

90yomakeuproom · 21/04/2025 15:17

It's disgusting. My MIL does this too. Makes me want to vomit

MemorableTrenchcoat · 21/04/2025 15:18

Anyone who thinks a dishwasher won’t obliterate anything that came from the dog’s mouth is plain daft.

Jsidken · 21/04/2025 15:19

Gross

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 21/04/2025 15:19

I don’t put the plates down for the dog but I’d he licks them on the dishwasher I don’t particularly mind. As you say they are going to washed at a high temperature.

Missing the point but why are you using the 90 degree setting. I usually use the slow echo one which is up to 65 degrees but often lower.

tirednessreigns · 21/04/2025 15:19

That’s absolutely disgusting. Wouldn’t let my children eat at a house like this either!

ZepherinDrouhin · 21/04/2025 15:19

That's disgusting, I am with your dil in this situation. I've seen dogs eat and sniff shit so there's no way I'd let them pick a plate.

MatildaTheCat · 21/04/2025 15:20

Clearly a binary subject!

I’m in the licking camp and FWIW none of us are ever ill.

pinklimefish · 21/04/2025 15:20

sorry OP, I have a dog and he’s licked a plate clean before when I’ve not noticed but I would never ever ever let him do this infront of guests, and our standard here is we scrape leftovers in to his bowl if he can have them. I’d be horrified to watch this!

so you just left the plates on the floor for the dog to sort of pre-wash in front of everyone??

WtafIsThat · 21/04/2025 15:20

Gross.

Dishes don’t need to be pre cleaned before they go in the dishwasher, dog or otherwise!

tobedtoMN · 21/04/2025 15:21

Grim. My understanding is that the DW is NOT hot enough to kill dog germs.
I love dogs. I would never do this.

GardenGaff · 21/04/2025 15:21

Our dog waits by the dishwasher for us to load up as he knows he gets a few minutes to lick the dishes before we turn the dishwasher on. It’s never occurred to me to stop him (unless we’ve had something like curry), it’s one of the highlights of his day. 😂

What do you (and similarly squeamish posters) think a dishwasher does?

Of course it's OK.

Bonjovispyjamas · 21/04/2025 15:21

Wouldn't bother me, but I know it would a lot of people, so wouldn't do it front of guests.

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/04/2025 15:21

I have no particular issue with this - they are going in the dishwasher ffs. I wouldn’t let guests see though, in case you get the sort of silly drama that’s kicked off here…

FedupofArsenalgame · 21/04/2025 15:22

I dont have a dog but tbh I can't see a big issue. The stuff is being washed well afterwards. Is it any worse than grimy toddlers lucking plates and if do why?

Arlanymor · 21/04/2025 15:22

Get out a spare dog bowl, scrape the leftovers into there, give to dog.

Much better way of doing things when you have guests over.
