Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

I have a dog but never allow him to lick plates that humans use. If he has any scraps they go in his bowl. I know that a dishwasher will kill any germs but I still don't like the idea. When you consider that they lick themselves in the most intimate parts of their bodies and greet each other by sniffing bottoms, the very thought of it is enough to make anyone feel sick.

Darkclothes · 21/04/2025 15:52

Are you my MIL OP?

In addition to plates, she allows her dogs to lick between her toes and any bleeding wounds she has on her body- oh yes, at the dinner table with guests there too! 😱

Cavagirl · 21/04/2025 15:52

YABU for describing a dog licking dirty dinner plates as "pre washing" Envy

I have never seen a human run up to a strange person in public and lick their ass. Never known a human to eat fox shit either. It's really not the same thing.

My dog has never licked another dog's ass either. They sniff, not lick.
And people do lick other people's asses.

NoraLuka · 21/04/2025 15:52

That’s gross. DP used to let his dog do this and I refused to eat at his house because of it. I was too embarrassed to say why but there was no way I was eating from a dog plate! It also makes you wonder what other disgusting things they think are ok.

badgermushroomm · 21/04/2025 15:52

I mean on the hygiene front – they probably will be sterilised, however have you never taken something out and there’s a bit of food left on there?! It’s not 100%

Besides the hygiene thing (theoretically should be fine for the most part), it’s just an unappealing visual for someone I guess. We let our dog lick peanut butter off the teaspoon after we’ve dolloped it sometimes, but wouldn’t do it if we had guests round for brekkie! 🙈🤣

What was the point of calling out that they live in the US? Are you suggesting that it’s the norm for dogs to lick plates after dinner in the UK?

Im a dog lover and that’s grim, disgusting and unnecessary. Feed your dogs normally in their bowls, why do they need to lick each plate before you load them to the dishwasher?

By your logic there’s nothing wrong rinsing plates with toilet water because the dishwasher will kill the germs lol. And the fact you think it’s fine to dk that in front of guests says a lot.

Edited

I'm only saying this because USA seem to have different standards about pets. EG: DIL commented that the local cats seem to be allowed to wander around at will. I say 'yay-hey of course cats do whatever'. It seems in USA you are expected to keep your cats indoors or enclosed. They also have different standards of hyenine - she questioned that I don't change the bedsheets every day. I said that they are regularly changed every week which is as much as necessary. She also questioned that I had bed linen on a washing line - doesn't that encourage allergies? Umm - no it makes the bed smell lovely & fresh.

Plenty of people on here saying YABU don't wash their hands every time they use the loo, their families don't either, their homes are covered in snot their small kids wipe on every available surface, lots of them wear their shoes indoors, yet they're choosing to be precious about dogs licking plates before the plates are washed at 90 degrees in a dishwasher. Total non-issue.

Er, what makes you think that?

Anjo2011 · 21/04/2025 15:53

Grim and unhygienic.

Yes to that.

And people have presumably licked the spoons and forks that have also gone into the dishwasher, along with glasses and cups that have touched their lips, with goodness knows what saliva and germs still attached.

Plus fillet knives, kitchen scissors, cutting boards, etc that have been used on raw meats...

Lascivious · 21/04/2025 15:54

Skanky and grim, I’d not eat in your house ever again. No one with even a modicum of decorum would do this.

Totally tedious and irrelevant backstory too.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 21/04/2025 15:54

Disgusting.
I'd never eat in your hone again.
Standard of hygiene is low, even with a dishwasher.
I love my dog, but no. 🤮

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 21/04/2025 15:48

Because a dog is an animal that licks its own bottom and eats other animals shit? The other is a human and presumably supposed to eat off the plates in question? You seem to be struggling with the concept of different species.

Yeah but you would use a fork your mum has used, knowing she has probably has your dads willy in her mouth? Seems a double standard.

Also before somebody comes at me saying this is impossible because they are an orphan or something, use your imagination for similar hypotheticals and where other people in your households or restaurants have had their mouths.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/04/2025 15:54

Our dog always licked plates, and anything else tasty. Her favourite was a roasting tin - she’d hold it down with one paw and keep at it till there was barely a molecule left.
A fish pie dish was another favourite.
Everything in the dishwasher afterwards, and nobody’s ever got ill. I’ve no patience with people who are so ridiculous about ‘hygiene’ when the danger is all in their obsessed heads.

iamsoshocked · 21/04/2025 15:54

I admit that we let our dogs pre wash selected items.

However - and here's a warning to people who do do this….
I was cooking for friends and the pan I wanted wasn't in the cupboard. So I looked in the dishwasher, saw the pan was "clean" and got it out. Luckily, and thank goodness, I then realised that the dishwasher was actually full of dirty stuff ready to be put on. Eek! Now that really would have been gross!

Gloriia · 21/04/2025 15:55

Oh op it's just basic social and hygiene etiquette. It doesn't matter how super sterile your washer is it's the aesthetic of how it looks, a snap shot of what you let your animals get away with.

Maybe they lick the odd plate that doesn't get washed at 90c and just gets a quick rinse under the tap?

I wouldn't eat at your house again.

Pets should not come into contact with anything people eat from, ever.

Netcam · 21/04/2025 15:56

fiveIsNewOne · 21/04/2025 15:42

It doesn't matter whether it really is safe or dangerous. It is just one of those things that some dog people do and non-dog people are grimmed by that.

It is emotional thing, you are used to having your dog everywhere, while non-dog people would like to see some separation between human eating and dog feeding, and the plate is a part of human eating.

So yes, from non-dog person point of view YABU.

Yes, definitely agree with this. It's not really about the hygiene because washed at 90 it will be fine. It's the thought of it.

When you have a colonoscopy, that camera has been up someone else's bum.

I can't get worked up about dogs licking plates.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 21/04/2025 15:56

To me, it's on par with people who put their loo brushes in the dishwasher, just No!

She'll be wondering what else you do hygiene wise, do you stroke the dogs when prepping food & not wash your hands because "they are clean".

She doesn't trust your hygiene standards.

There are things you don't do in company.

Kattuccino · 21/04/2025 15:56

I would find this really unpleasant. I wouldn't want to eat off plates that a dog has licked. I might rationally know that a hot dishwasher will kill the germs, but it's one of those visceral reactions that defy logic!

Umbilicat · 21/04/2025 15:57

It's fine, I do it all the time because as many say the very high dishwasher temperatures will easily zap any germs. I don't do it in front of any visitor who might object though. People on here are hilariously precious

Pandimoanymum · 21/04/2025 15:57

Well, i don't think it's unreasonable as long as they're going on a hot wash, but having said that, if I saw you doing it and I didn't know how hot you were washing them, I would feel a bit grim and not want to eat off your plates next time. I think the DIL was over the top to make such a song & dance over it and flounce off, though. I'd have just said something like "eew, Maureen, I hope those are going on 90 degrees?!" in a lighthearted way.

Cynic17 · 21/04/2025 15:57

It's fine. Dishwasher is so hot, it will kill everything.
Even my super-clean, houseproud friend lets her dogs lick the plates 😂

godmum56 · 21/04/2025 15:57

lessglittermoremud · 21/04/2025 15:52

I don’t put the pots, pans etc on the floor for the dogs before loading in the dishwasher, but the littlest dog does try and climb in whilst I’m loading it and licks the things she can reach, draw the line at the clambering in but it doesn’t bother me if she manages to lick a few bits before I shoo her away.
It just seems a little odd to me to encourage your dog to eat off human plates etc not from the germ aspect but because don’t they then expect to be able to eat off of everything, get excited when they see normal plates?

nope, neither did any dog of mine ever try to steal food or beg at the table even though I did feed them (appropriate) human scraps from the table.

Zanatdy · 21/04/2025 15:57

I let my dog sleep in the bed with me, but licking plates (even knowing they are going in dishwasher) is a hard no. Even it I did allow it, I certainly wouldn’t in front of guests who ate at my house.
