Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

It doesn't matter whether it really is safe or dangerous. It is just one of those things that some dog people do and non-dog people are grimmed by that.

It is emotional thing, you are used to having your dog everywhere, while non-dog people would like to see some separation between human eating and dog feeding, and the plate is a part of human eating.

So yes, from non-dog person point of view YABU.

tilypu · 21/04/2025 15:42

Do none of you handle food with the hand you wipe your arse with? Because it's highly unlikely it gets washed at a temperature as high as the plates will be!

bengalcat · 21/04/2025 15:43

Probably best not to do it in front of such sensitives .
Always let my dog lick my food bowl unless it contains something she shouldn’t have - I don’t have a dishwasher and just wash up in hot water and washing up liquid .

Anon765898 · 21/04/2025 15:43

In theory you’re right, as long as your DW is actually working properly, however this would make me gag and put me off eating at your house
I mean in theory I could piss & shit in my cereal bowls to save walking to the bathroom… but I wouldn’t!!!

herbalteabag · 21/04/2025 15:43

It wouldn't bother me. I sometimes put my cat's bowls in the dishwasher with the other stuff!

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 21/04/2025 15:43

That’s disgusting.

Inextremis · 21/04/2025 15:43

I'm genuinely surprised that so many people have a problem with this - I've had dogs for over 50 years, and every single one of them has been allowed to lick plates before they were washed - for many of those 50 years we didn't even have a dishwasher.

I'm not sure what people are objecting to, or finding disgusting?

Livpool · 21/04/2025 15:44

Sorry but that is grim

NO NO NO. You gave me a bad queasy turn when I read this!
You should put 'WARNING' before posting this info!!

Was the extremely informative thread title not enough to warn you? 🤣

This. I don't understand people who waste the time and energy on a separate wash for the human/pet bowls.
Do you not trust your dishwasher?
Reminds me of a post years ago where someone said they had a separate washing machine for underwear.

SpryUmberZebra · 21/04/2025 15:44

What was the point of calling out that they live in the US? Are you suggesting that it’s the norm for dogs to lick plates after dinner in the UK?

Im a dog lover and that’s grim, disgusting and unnecessary. Feed your dogs normally in their bowls, why do they need to lick each plate before you load them to the dishwasher?

By your logic there’s nothing wrong rinsing plates with toilet water because the dishwasher will kill the germs lol. And the fact you think it’s fine to dk that in front of guests says a lot.

OhWhistle · 21/04/2025 15:44

It's a nice little job for DDog.
Love this.

AInightingale · 21/04/2025 15:45

Having given the dog the leftovers of dinner yesterday, I spent this morning cleaning up 5-6 pools of dog sick from the floor.

She didn't eat off the plates, that's not really the issue. Dogs shouldnt be eating anything but dog food or maybe plain chicken etc. Rich meat, gravy and fat is an absolute disaster as I've just discovered.

Neemie · 21/04/2025 15:45

It is completely revolting thing to do. I know some people do it and it isn’t actually harmful if they go in the dishwasher but lots of things that aren’t harmful are quite repulsive. Rinsing them in urine wouldn’t be harmful before bunging them in dishwasher but it would be equally off putting to me.

I think it's a bit gross and wouldn't be happy if someone did that at my house. But I don't run the dishwasher at 90, seems a terrible waste of energy.

However, there are all sorts. Yesterday I watched someone eating food from a bowl with a spoon, then put a spoonful into their dog's mouth, then dipped that same spoon into the food and continued to eat it themselves. DH, who is a big dog lover, noticed and even he thought it was disgusting.

Edited

Licking the spoon that your dog had licked - now that is gross.😖

I put it on at a high temp because dog has pre-washed the items, As is usually just the 2 of us & we only do dishwashing about twice maybe 3 times a week.

Vile, made me feel sick, just put the scraps in their bowl, dogs lick all sorts of things...

Chatterboxy · 21/04/2025 15:45

In my book, that’s totally f’kin gross 🤢

Longhotsummers · 21/04/2025 15:45

Dogs lick their arses - what you’re doing is grim, dishwasher or not. I’d also wonder what other unhygienic things you are doing aside from this and wouldn’t want to eat at your place at all.

MarxistMags · 21/04/2025 15:45

It's a big ICK !
I even had a separate tin opener for dog food.

HScully · 21/04/2025 15:45

Good grief! in company it is grim.

I'd probably do it behind closed doors knowing that the dish washer will sterilise them, but I'd be mortified in company.

Topseyt123 · 21/04/2025 15:46

I used to have two dogs and my labrador in particular loved to give everything he could a doggy prewash before it went into the dishwasher. It's fine, and no issues at all.

I also used to put the dog bowls in there too.

I see that the holier than thou squeamish brigade are out in force on this thread but that's to be expected. I never took much notice of their bleatings.

mathanxiety · 21/04/2025 15:46

I can see why your DIL was grossed out. After all, she only has your word for it that you do a 90 degree wash every time.

However, if you do the hot wash every time, your plates are clean and sanitised.

Daffodilpup · 21/04/2025 15:46

Notarsed · 21/04/2025 15:14

I am a huge dog lover but that's grim. I wouldn't want to eat anything at your house either!

I agree. I wouldn’t be eating at yours either! Makes me feel sick and I have a dog myself. He has leftovers ….. but in his bowl!

Livpool · 21/04/2025 15:47

FedupofArsenalgame · 21/04/2025 15:22

I dont have a dog but tbh I can't see a big issue. The stuff is being washed well afterwards. Is it any worse than grimy toddlers lucking plates and if do why?

I wouldn’t let DS lick plates as a toddler but toddlers don’t lick their bums!

Hwi · 21/04/2025 15:48

No, not OK. Plates have microcracks. But on second thoughts - you have no idea what we are eating when eating out. Scores of hepatitis positive food servers, food preparation technicians, etc. etc. Scary to give it a proper thought.
