Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

😬💀

Kind of says it all.

gerul · 21/04/2025 15:48

Why not piss on the plates then since the dishwasher is going to clean it anyway?

Bloody disgusting and all the people saying they do it as well <vom>

Licking the spoon that your dog had licked - now that is gross.😖

I put it on at a high temp because dog has pre-washed the items, As is usually just the 2 of us & we only do dishwashing about twice maybe 3 times a week.

Dog has pre washed the item 😂😃please stop, it’s gross 😡

lifeonmars100 · 21/04/2025 15:45

Vile, made me feel sick, just put the scraps in their bowl, dogs lick all sorts of things...

So do people.

whycantibeselfishforonce · 21/04/2025 15:48

Gross. I would not want to eat from plates that dogs licked on a regular basis even if they were put in the dishwasher. As pps have said, there's stuff we do in private and not in company and this is for sure a not in company thing to do! She may have been a bit dramatic to leave but I'm definitely team DIL.

FedupofArsenalgame · 21/04/2025 15:22

I dont have a dog but tbh I can't see a big issue. The stuff is being washed well afterwards. Is it any worse than grimy toddlers lucking plates and if do why?

Because a dog is an animal that licks its own bottom and eats other animals shit? The other is a human and presumably supposed to eat off the plates in question? You seem to be struggling with the concept of different species.

Londontown12 · 21/04/2025 15:49

I’m a dog owner I find that disgusting and I have a dishwasher it’s just the thought of a dog licking a plate u use it’s really horrible !

godmum56 · 21/04/2025 15:49

I am 50 50 on this one. I have done it for years, also the dog bowls went in the washing machine, as does the tortoise drinking bowl and I am still alive.....but on the basis of what the eye doesn't see, I probably wouldn't have done it in front of a guest. but meh, no great loss if she is that snotty.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 21/04/2025 15:49

Plenty of people on here saying YABU don't wash their hands every time they use the loo, their families don't either, their homes are covered in snot their small kids wipe on every available surface, lots of them wear their shoes indoors, yet they're choosing to be precious about dogs licking plates before the plates are washed at 90 degrees in a dishwasher. Total non-issue.

IllustratedDictionaryOfTheDoldrums · 21/04/2025 15:49

If a plate needs to be 'pre-cleaned' before it goes in the dishwasher, then the dishwasher probably isn't cleaning it as well as it should.
I recognise that it might well clean properly but it still feels really disgusting. I'd not eat at yours if I saw it. I'd not try shame you over it but I'd avoid invites in future.

Hohofortherobbers · 21/04/2025 15:49

Disgusting. I would not eat from your kitchen having seen this

lifeonmars100 · 21/04/2025 15:49

SoSoLong · 21/04/2025 15:29

I'm fairly sure it is safe, however the irrational part of my brain tells me it's yuck and no, I wouldn't eat in your house again.

That is how I feel, it may make sense scientifically but my stomach is squirming thinking about a drooly doggy tongue slurping all over a plate

WrylyAmused · 21/04/2025 15:50

Not going to kill anyone, but many many people will find it completely disgusting. As I do.

Scrape the leftovers into the dog's bowl.

I don't care how much my cognitive mind knows the plates are clean from the dishwasher, I still find it completely gross and it is unnecessary, as dogs have their own bowls.

NewBrightonEel · 21/04/2025 15:50

Disgusting 🤮

WorryBear · 21/04/2025 15:50

I agree. This is disgusting.

12doublerolls · 21/04/2025 15:50

filth 🤮

mathanxiety · 21/04/2025 15:50

AInightingale · 21/04/2025 15:45

Having given the dog the leftovers of dinner yesterday, I spent this morning cleaning up 5-6 pools of dog sick from the floor.

She didn't eat off the plates, that's not really the issue. Dogs shouldnt be eating anything but dog food or maybe plain chicken etc. Rich meat, gravy and fat is an absolute disaster as I've just discovered.

Agree - dogs have different dietary requirements from humans, and not everything (by a long shot) is going to be good for them, especially if they get to lick plates frequently. It's also good for them socially to keep a degree of separation between them and the family.

WhereIsMyLight · 21/04/2025 15:50

Dog owner and the dogs never lick a plate. Any appropriate leftovers is scraped into their bowls. Partly because I hate the idea of dogs licking plates but also we don’t allow feeding from plates and we don’t allow begging at the table either.

I usually run the dishwasher on an eco wash. I give the dog bowls a hand wash but will occasionally shove them in the dishwasher by themselves on a hot wash.

Bobnobob · 21/04/2025 15:50

Oh yuck. Even if rationally they were sterile it would still turn my stomach.

XenoBitch · 21/04/2025 15:51

Livpool · 21/04/2025 15:47

I wouldn’t let DS lick plates as a toddler but toddlers don’t lick their bums!

No, toddlers are even worse. they touch their bums and bits, then touch everything in shops.

Kids are more gross.

IllustratedDictionaryOfTheDoldrums · 21/04/2025 15:51

XenoBitch · 21/04/2025 15:48

So do people.

I have never seen a human run up to a strange person in public and lick their ass. Never known a human to eat fox shit either. It's really not the same thing.

LegendIsMyFavouriteGladiator · 21/04/2025 15:51

It is objectively grim. Just because it's not harmful, doesn't mean it's not still a disgusting thought. Dogs eat shit FFS.

Having said all that, I do occasionally let our cats lick the bowl if I've been making tuna mayo before I put it in the dishwasher. But I am aware that this is also rank, and for that reason it is a dirty secret that I would never ever do it in front of guests. I can't believe you did! if I was a guest in someone's house and they did this I'd be knocked sick.

DoYouReally · 21/04/2025 15:51

This thread has been enough for me to decide I'm never eating in any dog lovers home again.

I don't know which is worse OP who does it and doesn't or the posters who acknowledge it's do disgusting they only do it in private.

I didn't realise so many people are so disgusting. Absolutely vile.

viques · 21/04/2025 15:51

I think it’s grim, which surprised me a bit because I always wash the cats dishes in the dishwasher which is pretty much the same thing.

lessglittermoremud · 21/04/2025 15:52

I don’t put the pots, pans etc on the floor for the dogs before loading in the dishwasher, but the littlest dog does try and climb in whilst I’m loading it and licks the things she can reach, draw the line at the clambering in but it doesn’t bother me if she manages to lick a few bits before I shoo her away.
It just seems a little odd to me to encourage your dog to eat off human plates etc not from the germ aspect but because don’t they then expect to be able to eat off of everything, get excited when they see normal plates?
