Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

Revolting.

I'm 100% with your DIL and think it's absolutely disgusting.

It turns my stomach completely.

I would never eat in your house again as long as I lived.

I don't care about any arguments re temperatures etc. It's completely stomach churning.

I can't be around people who don't have boundaries with animals.

Same people who have their dogs get into their beds. Gross doesn’t even begin to cover it.

IWillAlwaysBeinaClubWithYouin1973 · 21/04/2025 15:36

I've done this for years - albeit I'd say occasionally not every single time - I think other people might find it off putting, I can understand that. Maybe just not do it front of guests!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 21/04/2025 15:36

Doesn't bother me at all but then I'm not particularly worried about germs.

I probably wouldn't allow my dog to do it in front of guests though.

Delatron · 21/04/2025 15:36

Ooh we do this. Common sense tells you that any germs will be killed in the dishwasher.

However, I do remember before getting a dog a friend wanted to use one of my bowls for her dogs water and I found that disgusting! So things do change a lot when you get dogs.

XenoBitch · 21/04/2025 15:36

I can't get worked up about this.

Surgical instruments get reused between people too.

As long as everything is cleaned, then what is the problem?

Evaka · 21/04/2025 15:36

One of the many, many things I'd do but not in front of guests. Lots of people have zero understanding of bacteria/germs.

krustykittens · 21/04/2025 15:37

I'm a life long dog owner and I am sorry, but I think this is grim. Anything that my animals eat or drink from is kept seperate from human utensils, I never feed from my plate or my table or even have the dogs in the room when I eat as I hate them begging. Treat food, such as left over chicken and gravy, is scraped into their bowls - I am with your DIL on this.

BarnacleBeasley · 21/04/2025 15:37

I'm a bit torn, because I definitely wouldn't do this in front of guests (or at all, because I don't want my dog to think he gets people food). But I do occasionally let him lick a bowl in which I have beaten eggs.

Zippedydodah · 21/04/2025 15:37

My SIL does this and I think it’s very unhygienic.
We have dogs but never have I put down a plate or anything else for them to lick. If there are leftovers suitable for them then they get put into their food bowls.

Megifer · 21/04/2025 15:37

Ahhhhh, I do love a good competitive discusted thread. I'm so happy this already has a hint of "I'd wonder what other neglect you're capable of and would insist we go NC"

🤗

wastingtimeonhere · 21/04/2025 15:38

I don't particularly like the idea of using cutlery, cups, glasses that have been in other human mouths either ,but they all get washed in the dishwasher. So it doesn't bother me as long as they are clean. The dogs stuff goes in on high temp here too.
I work with someone who won't use any mug at work bar his own as there isn't a dishwasher. He caught another colleague using his mug, he binned it.

lovemycbf · 21/04/2025 15:38

No I love dogs but that’s so disgusting
I wouldn’t eat at your house again knowing that either.
dogs lick their bums 🤢🤢

Fleetheart · 21/04/2025 15:38

I let the dogs lick the plates, don’t see an issue with it- but agree with the others, possibly don’t do it with guests around. Some of them are a bit precious 😅, probably like those people who change their pyjamas every day and don’t let anyone use their towel.

Dweetfidilove · 21/04/2025 15:38

Dear Jesus,

I thank you for my parents who raised me to not eat everywhere I go.

Amen 🙏🏾.

AlmondLoaf · 21/04/2025 15:38

It's disgusting just put the leftovers in the bowl.. Really unhygienic would make me think what else are you doing yuck.

Netcam · 21/04/2025 15:38

I think it's a bit gross and wouldn't be happy if someone did that at my house. But I don't run the dishwasher at 90, seems a terrible waste of energy.

However, there are all sorts. Yesterday I watched someone eating food from a bowl with a spoon, then put a spoonful into their dog's mouth, then dipped that same spoon into the food and continued to eat it themselves. DH, who is a big dog lover, noticed and even he thought it was disgusting.

I'd be more concerned that your plate/gravy etc has onions, garlic and other things poisonous for dogs on it!!!

If you let you dog do this, then at least have the common sense to not subject guests to seeing you do it!

The GC who usually stay with us like to scrape the plates to remove anything that might hurt the dog & put it down for her. It's only the DIL who lives in USA who has objected. My DsD who is a senior nurse encourages her children to do this at our house as will go into dishwasher at a high temp & she doesn't have any problem with it. I was rather shocked at USA living DIL's reaction TBH.

I wouldn’t give the plate to my dog to lick, but any lab owner knows that a lab will race to the dishwater to see what s/he can lick before you shut the door closed.

SaladSandwichesForTea · 21/04/2025 15:39

Absolutely fucking disgusting.

Put the food in the dog bowl and hand-wash it after with its own cloth.

Sorry but I don't see how that is different.

NO NO NO. You gave me a bad queasy turn when I read this!
You should put 'WARNING' before posting this info!!

Reallybadidea · 21/04/2025 15:41

I think logically it's fine because they're being washed in strong detergent at a high temperature. However, my gut reaction to seeing someone do it when I've just eaten off their plates would be similar to your DIL's. Having said that, she's being a bit of a hypocrite seeing as she was encouraging the dogs to lick faces, which is definitely unhygienic.

Anotherparkingthread · 21/04/2025 15:42

It's fine, it's not like you're about to serve her anything straight from the plate. If it turns her stomach she can fuck off elseware. You're more likely than catch something from another person. I would hazard she's had worse things in her mouth.

My dog occasionally steals tea, what would she expect that I throw away all the mugs away? Perhaps mug roulette? They are all identical so I couldn't even remove the dog licked one now if I wanted 😂

She needs to grow up and get a grip

diddl · 21/04/2025 15:42

I think it's odd to let the dog lick every plate & pan!

I would have though scraping onto one plate would be enough-or preferably into the dog's bowl!
