Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

There's no "suddenly" about it!

Flipping the scenario, silliest place for children....Locally we have a dog park. Its an enclosed area for exercising dogs, with solid 'agility' equipment. It has signs denoting it's purpose. It's open to all though so not suited to reactive dogs, you can open the gate and walk in. There were 4 dogs with a couple of owners and here was a family in there with a couple of kids. Mum complained about the dogs there, and little girl complained that there weren't swings. Another dog owner pointed out the childrens play park further across the playing fields. Apparently the play equipment was better there. 🤷🙈😂

Showing of film of Twelfth Night ata local independent cinema. Kids bored stiff chasing each other around the cinema and up and down central aisle. Parents let them get on with it.

John Lewis do allow pet dogs in.
We have had dogs for years before lockdown, and when I read stories on the 'anti dog' threads, we are obviously in the minority group of well behaved dogs and owners who take responsibility. We leave the dog at home when going to supermarkets, and even clothes shops because we know he'll be bored and whiny. If we do find ourselves out with him somewhere and we need a drink, then we'll find a suitable cafe that allows dogs. And Ted just sits down quietly without any problems.

I'm definitely not anti dog, I was just surprised to see a dog browsing the women's wear in john lewis 😂

Makes a change from it being anti trans 🤷‍♀️

I think you can be both so don’t panic.

YeOldeGreyhound · 21/04/2025 11:48

Not seen it with my own eyes as I never went, but I have seen some cinemas offer dog friendly screenings. I don't really see much point it that if I am honest.

A bonfire procession. Crowds of people, lots of noise, banging drums, fire. Poor thing was terrified

Neighbours87 · 21/04/2025 11:52

A lecture in a museum. Don’t think it was much fun for the dog.

I don’t think it’s sudden. It’s just that’s IRL dogs have become so invasive and lots of owners are such entitled arses that people are getting more and more frustrated about it yet unable to say anything about it. MN is somewhere they can vent

Oh my goodness, all these poor dogs expected to live a human life! So cruel. Let them be dogs! No, they don't want to look at handbags in John Lewis or listen to the Gospel in church.
Let dogs be dogs.

At a wedding.
My autisitic DS is terrified of dogs. It was a lot easier when. they werent' allowed in shopping centres and the like, then we knew we could go certain places and it qouldn't be an issue.
Ironically if dogs were where they're supposed to be - parks, along by the river etc - it probably wouldn't bother him so much as he'd be expecting them.
And those ones tend to be better behaved anyway ,why do dogs need to be in clothes shops and the like?!

I think expectation is the right word. You expect to see dogs having a ball in a park, on the beach, on nice walks etc. You don’t expect dogs in restaurants, supermarkets, Superdrug (where I saw one recently sniffing about all the stuff on the lower shelves), clothes shops etc. Guide dogs exempt obviously. My partner is allergic so it’s annoying to walk into a restaurant to see a dog there, unless it specifically states ‘dog friendly’ like a couple of cafes around my area which is fair enough. We both like dogs though.
Also don’t think it’s very fun for the dog.

I agree in general that dogs don’t have a great time in shopping centres, but I imagine at least some of the people taking them are doing so opportunistically. Popping in after a walk or similar, rather than making a conscious decision to take them from home.

I also assume businesses know that, which is why they allow dogs in. If the shop or cafe is dog friendly, you might swing by on your way home, yet be unlikely to make a special trip.

It’s always tough for those who are allergic or scared, but unfortunately businesses are always going to do whatever makes them more money - and it seems that being dog friendly is better for their bottom line.

To a funeral.

I asked to take our dog to DH’s funeral but the crem had a no dogs policy.
That said I wouldn’t take him into clothes shops in case his waggy tail is muddy and he puts mud on the clothes (have stood outside waiting for DD and on more than one occasion a shop worker has come and said I can go in!)
Was getting my nails done - the place is tiny (narrow) and someone had their golden retriever with them - he smelt aswell!)

To a funeral.

My late grandad's dog was at his funeral. He was his family, and his dog was missing him too. He actually had a great time (and a lot of buffet food).

nearly55 · 21/04/2025 12:20

When I went with my DM to meet the funeral director to plan a family funeral, she was horrified that DDog was waiting in the car outside. She insisted I bring him in to the meeting and made a massive fuss of him. She even introduced him to the other staff we we met as we were leaving.

I hate anti-dog people in dog friendly cafes. There’s nothing worse than sitting down with my well behaved dog in a cafe that welcomes dogs and having someone turn their nose up. There’s are so many selfish dog haters who appear not to understand that many people - and cafe owners - don’t share their hate of dogs but actively love them and want to enjoy spending time with them.

I'm feel the same. There are plenty of cafes which don't allow dogs, why don't they go there instead of moaning about the ones that do?!

Likewise, I stay at the coast with my dog for my holidays. It's a dog-friendly place. It has two lovely beaches, one where dogs are allowed, the other (clearly marked) where they are not. The dogs-allowed beach is the first beach you come to from the accommodation. Instead of walking the short distance to the correct beach, some people come on the "dog" beach and pull faces/start muttering to each other because there are dogs, including mine, having a great time diving about in the sea or chasing their ball. I used to just tolerate it but now I helpfully - as if they are "lost" - point them in the direction of the humans-only beach whilst wishing them a good holiday. This, to date, has worked!

honeylulu · 21/04/2025 13:02

This was about 20+ years ago but a temporary secretary at work brought her little dog to work in her bag. (A shih tzu called Gucci.) The most surprising thing was that she hadn't asked, just turned up with him.

To be fair, he was very well behaved and just sat in the bag or slept under her desk. She told us she took him clubbing as well - that might have been a joke as hard to believe!

rosemarble · 21/04/2025 13:10

In some smaller towns there really aren't plenty of cafes to choose from, and many have recently decided to allow dogs so regular non-dog lovers might be upset about the change. Also, lunches etc are often now dictated by the dog owners who want to go to cafe A or B because they allow dogs whereas before they'd walk their dog and then come out to lunch w/o it.

Our local (independent) cinema allows dogs in. I think our dog would be bored stupid.

9/10 you don’t realise it’s a “dog friendly” cafe until someone walks in with one! By the time someone’s precious pooch is sniffing your ankle, you’re already mid-coffee and your relaxation time has been spoilt.

There was a thread on here a while ago where OP was on holiday and went into a restaurant. She chose seating in the dog friendly bit because of the views from the window.
Of course, another diner turns up with their dog and OP kicked up a huge stink. The dog and owner were moved and given a free bottle of wine for their trouble. OP then got into a rage about that too. Her sense of entitlement was off the scale.

On MN, people get offended over a dog looking at them.
