Another mosley cashing in

Sickofitandmore · 20/04/2025 07:48

Partnered with the Daily mail as usual. Michael Mosleys son is taking over the task of cashing in on people's weight struggles. So now instead of being plagued with his late df's money extracting diet plans, we are going to be subjected to Jack Mosley's take on weight loss drugs. Such blatant jumping on the band wagon to squeeze some money out. People are losing lots of weight with the weight loss jabs and no longer need to pay people to give them another faddy diet plan. WW has felt it, SW will hopefully be next and when will the Mosleys just bugger off?!

Michael Moseley was a shark just like the rest of those people peddling weight loss advice via significant calorie restriction. Fast 800 is a very bad idea for many significantly overweight people who often have quite a lot of psychological issues with food. It just feeds the yo yo diet cycle as much as slimming world or weight watchers. No probs at all all if you have a generally healthy relationship with food and just eat wish to drop half a stone.

He qualified as a Doctor - even if he chose not to practice - presumably seven or so years at medical school equips someone with above average knowledge/skill to review and present that research in a responsible way?

Actually, doctors learn about anatomy and disease. Their training doesn’t include how to do research. They are not scientists. Also, it’s incumbent on any clinician to have ongoing training to keep themselves up to date. Training 45 years ago, with no training since, means he was completely out of date and like most degrees, he will have forgotten the bulk of what he learned!

Dymaxion · 20/04/2025 18:57

Their training doesn’t include how to do research

No but their training does equip them with the ability to read research and critique it, as does Nursing training.

Dymaxion · 20/04/2025 19:03

Maybe email Professor Roy Taylor and let him know your opinions ? I am sure all those years of research can be dismissed, on your say so !

The Van T brothers might be annoying to you but you can’t say they’re mansplaining as their audience is men and women. A bit patronising maybe. I think they are better suited to children’s presenting.

Yes maybe - I think it’s the use of their GP /doctor status & inference that what they say is therefore authoritative & haloed. Yes it’s a well worn trope & there are female doctors who’ve do/have done this too. And I am all for making health information easy to understand & accessible. I’m probably just projecting - I’m a middle aged woman who’s had enough of useless GP’s & find the whole rehashing of common sense or already well established health advice as though it was new or somehow revolutionary just a bit annoying. Yes they can use themselves as guinea pigs & then tell you how to then best treat whatever ailment or condition they’re seeking to enlighten us about. But that usually involves them having access to the leaders in the field & specialist doctors, at hospitals or laboratories the majority of us will never be able to access, or private medicine where they get all manner of in depth tests to help either diagnose or treat said ailment. MM spent his time doing just that & when you’re grappling with health conditions without that luxury, it can just prove more frustrating than anything else. I know I don’t have to participate & can switch off. And very offen do!

Based on others findings and research. If you look in the books you will see it's all based on others work.

you must have loads to say about David Attenborough and Princess Kate.

they seem to do a heck of a lot of talking about stuff they haven’t done actual scientific research on. In Kate’s case she’s got no qualifications in any area she discusses at all. Attenborough studied biology or some such thing for 3 years and then has had a life long career in talking about other people’s research

Betteboop · 20/04/2025 22:03

It’s important to remember that they’re aligning their brand to align with WL Medication so as not to go the same way as WW & other weight loss companies. And as a PP has rightly said, their shakes & weight loss products are absolutely the stuff of the diet industry which we know from the scientific literature make money out of self-defeating diets designed to achieve rapid weight loss leaving you vulnerable to weight gain afterwards. Yes MM designed the Mediterranean diet (being doctors enabled him & his wife to take credit for a whole historical /geographical culture of food & diet of old lol) to promote healthy, balanced eating & maintenance, but realistically what he was peddling was no different really to all the other diet consumables & plans that the Cambridge Diet back in the 80’s/90’s was so notorious for. Medical diets are not new - MM simply disseminated them to the mainstream & decided to me rise his take on them. They are positioning themselves now to work along side WL meds.

Betteboop · 20/04/2025 22:04

Shld read - Decided to monetise his take on them.

nongnangning · 20/04/2025 23:37

@Betteboop Is it really true to say Michael Mosley was "peddling"?
This a word for charlatans and scammers!

IMO his documentary on fasting a few years ago was evidence-based and really good. I also think his books (with and without his wife) are good. Clear, engaging and with recipes etc. I think what he was trying to do was completely the opposite of charlatans and scammers - to help people lose weight and stay healthy on the basis of the most recent science.
Soon after his death his wife said that she had been astonished by the outpouring of support - so many people getting in touch to say how much they felt his work had helped them.

Betteboop · 21/04/2025 01:17

@nongnangning no I do have respect for what he & his wife achieved which I’ve acknowledged in my earlier replies on the thread. And he was a very likeable & earnest fellow who died in the most tragic & heartbreaking circumstances. But I can’t help but find their dietary products a part of the diet industry that is known to profit from people’s vulnerability. Him being medically qualified only makes his products more lucrative. The Cambridge Diet was developed by Dr Alan Howard at Cambridge University. Ketogenic diets (the principles of which MM appropriated & adapted for his Very Fast 800 Diet) were medically devised in origin & used in a range of clinical applications including epilepsy & bariatric care amongst others. So it’s nothing very new or revolutionary. It’s no coincidence that their brand is aligning with WLM & there’s nothing wrong with that. But it’s still using the white coat phenomenon to make a lot of money. I think I’m sceptical because I don’t find it particularly new or see his family or foundation using their medical credentials & research to lobby government or get food labelling changed, a sugar tax added or school/hospital meals improved etc but I may be completely wrong.

Hot Shots Idiot GIF

So now drugs are better than learning to eat a healthy diet.
Ive really heard it all on mumsnet today!

NotSafeInTaxis · 21/04/2025 01:25

You mean DR jack Mosley and DR Michael Mosley (and btw, DR Claire Bailey Mosley).
If you don't like it, don't read it. No need to be a dick about it though.

I use intermittent fasting and WLI. The intermittent fasting is not for weight loss, it’s for sleep and my gut health and making sure that my inflammation is lowered as far as possible.

Intermittent fasting is amazing for the body. I wish it had weight loss effects on me but unfortunately I need the injections to be able to eat less than a thousand calories (1000 calories is maintenance for me, NOT able to lose weight on it as need to be at 800 for weight loss)

800 calories?? Are you sure?

Oblomov25 · 21/04/2025 04:18

It's hardly surprising that son has taken up dad's mantle.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/04/2025 06:47

keepyaheadup

very sure, very short, well under 5ft, menopause. It’s taken me a year to lose the last 3 stone on WLI. I eat the same thing every day to get my protein in (2 eggs, a chicken breast, Greek salad, half a potato, 2 babybels, one biscuit 😁)

the only way I can eat that little without being consumed by hunger is by doing WLI. Also they really help with intermittent fasting as I’m not hungry til about 2pm.

MM was a journalist and yes, he studied the research of others. He never, and I never, said it was his own research. I have read some of his work. He made that research accessible.

WithOnlyTheMemories · 21/04/2025 07:26

Honestly one of the weirdest threads I've read on here (and there are a few).

Imagine shock using your skills, knowledge and persona to make money, whilst also helping lots of people?! My god will the horrors never end?

Yes, he was a medically trained medical journalist. His job was to present information that might help the public, and I think he did help many people all over the world. Why you are so upset about this (dead) man is a mystery.

Bcos WLM threaten their business so to align with them makes good sense. Like it or not their business is in weight loss & dieting. Same as WW was.

What a bizarre point to make. You expected him to do all his own scientific research? What's wrong with using the already published and verified scientific data? It's good practice to base his guidance on actual science.
You do realise that researchers use existing research too? Look at the reference section of any scientific paper and you'll see how much scientists use existing data for their own research.

Be reasonable - faddy diets and mumbo jumbo are natural, WLI are messing with the person's natural biology big time. Do you not see that? It is strange to see such enthusiasm for WLI on MN which only a few days ago applauded the SC decision because it was natural biology and common sense (which it was, I agree).

I haven’t read the book by the young Mosley, I’m not on WLIs and I loved Michael Mosley. I’m commenting because there’s so much fattist nonsense on this thread.

All medical injections are messing with people’s natural biology but we still give them to people, including our precious infants. Antibiotics are messing with the natural order but we don’t tell people that they need to fight the infection the natural way. Big Pharma make all new drugs including drugs that treat cancer and complex and debilitating conditions. Obesity is a disease and if it isn’t effectively treated it can lead to more serious disease and complications down the line. That’s not good for the patient or the NHS purse. Why are people so nasty to the overweight.
