Another mosley cashing in

Sickofitandmore · 20/04/2025 07:48

Partnered with the Daily mail as usual. Michael Mosleys son is taking over the task of cashing in on people's weight struggles. So now instead of being plagued with his late df's money extracting diet plans, we are going to be subjected to Jack Mosley's take on weight loss drugs. Such blatant jumping on the band wagon to squeeze some money out. People are losing lots of weight with the weight loss jabs and no longer need to pay people to give them another faddy diet plan. WW has felt it, SW will hopefully be next and when will the Mosleys just bugger off?!

Unpopular opinion, but I think the amount of people, particularly those who don't have huge amounts to lose, using the WLI is very worrying.

Yes, for very obese people the side affects probably outweigh the health problems associated with being obese. However, people who only have a few stone to lose, who wouldn't necessarily be prescribed them, are playing a dangerous game. Rapid weight loss not only means you're losing fat, you're also losing muscle and bone mass - presumably why many people taking them start to look gaunt. And the longterm affects are yet to be seen. What happens when you stop using them? If you've got issues regulating your food intake then surely that returns once your appetite is no longer suppressed?

And yes, people can get them without prescription, a local beautician is selling them

To my mind, the only way to successfully lose weight, and keep it off, is by changing your diet and lifestyle.

Edited

Two people at my work use/used them. One is a size 14, stopped at Christmas and is still suffering with some side affects such as wind and upset stomach. She barely changed her diet, still ate chocolate and crisps and drank alcohol. The second one has been on them for a month because she wants to lose a stone for her holidays, again still eats chocolate and drinks alcohol.

Surely THAT is cashing in?

BangersAndGnash · 20/04/2025 09:32

Critique and discuss any approach to health you like.

But personal digs are just nasty.

Avarice, ego, cashing in, etc etc.

Laughable when you consider the huge profits made by faceless corporations to provide drugs on a commercial basis.

Read all sources you trust (preferably researched or offered by qualified professionals) and pick what suits you.

No bitterness or vitriol required.

legsekeven · 20/04/2025 08:11

Surely just do what works for you! Weighlosa drugs are one day, diet plans are another. Depends on the person and how much you want/need to loose

Not really, diet plans don't have thyroid cancer, kidney malfunction or gall bladder issues as a potential side effect.

@Sickofitandmore I get it. To be fair I guess at least Jack is a doctor and is possibly being helpful to some.

But yes, it does seem avaricious when I've no doubt he and his family have more than enough money. Maybe he's doing it also for an ego boosting also? I've no idea.

And no - I don't think you're being vicious or vile for having an opinion 🙄

Folk are so over the top about everything now!!

Why does he have to be doing it for some hollow, nefarious reason?

Michael Mosely was respected as a great medical journalist and talented communicator who made a positive impact in a lot of people’s lives.

Maybe his (still grieving) family are proud of him and his legacy? Maybe they want to continue projects he was working on and follow in his footsteps rather than ‘move on’ and consign MM’s work to the past. He died less than a year ago, I’m sure anything they do to do with their Dad will mean a fair bit to them, as it would to any human in the same position.

IsItSnowing · 20/04/2025 09:35

There's nothing wrong with a doctor using someone else's research. The difference between a scientist/doctor doing this and an influencer is that the former is likely to have academic training in how to filter / use research. It's not just about reading it, it's about being able to understand it and look at where it is published, how reliable each source is. Not all published material is equal.

Sorrelbird · 20/04/2025 09:35

YABU for looking at the DM

You'd refer to a diabetic "jacking up" would you? Or do you reserve that for fatties?

Yeah, jacking up is a bit extreme! It's an injection into the muscle. You're not gonna turn into Pete fucking Doherty!

FatBottomGirlz · 20/04/2025 09:37

It sounds quite sensible, I don't have a problem with him.
Quote from the Mirror:
Jack, a GP Registrar and an expert in GLP-1 drugs - medications that can help manage Type 2 diabetes and obesity - explained the reason behind the book. He said: "I've spent years researching these groundbreaking medications. My medical training and Masters of Research in Diabetes has given me deep insight into the treatment of obesity, as well as the science behind these drugs, which are helping many people take control of their weight by silencing the “food noise” in their brains.

"But with these new "miracle" drugs comes the responsibility of using them safely and effectively. Many people buy them online without proper guidance, leading to potential risks like malnutrition and muscle loss.
"That’s why I’ve written Food Noise - to explain the science behind GLP-1s and how to use them safely. I combine real-life stories with practical advice on maintaining nutrients, preserving muscle mass, and building lasting habits to keep food noise at bay, even after stopping the medication."

I lost 50kg without paying out a penny to anyone... Proper old style.

Mosley had a business, son took over the business. Simple as that. I never thought highly of these businesses, but at least it's not full on scamming people. 🤷

Girlking · 20/04/2025 09:39

Duh · 20/04/2025 08:21

Of all the things to be outraged about you choose this?

I liked and respected Michael Mosley and I wish his son, and whole family, well in carrying on the family business, particular after such tragedy.

I agree 👍🏻

Sounds sensible, and he's qualified at least!

Sickofitandmore · 20/04/2025 08:09

Based on others findings and research. If you look in the books you will see it's all based on others work.

Well, yes. He was a science communicator, not a research scientist.

Communicating science in a way that’s understandable to the average person, especially at a time when most people barely have a GCSE in biology, is really difficult.

MM helped a lot of people understand the fundamentals of weight loss and healthy eating.

If you want to get angry at someone ‘cashing in’, I suggest you start with those lying and selling snake oil supplements, not a family of doctors.

I do agree on the Mail, though - but if you’re reading it, you don’t really have a principled stance, do you?

FrenchandSaunders · 20/04/2025 09:45

MM is one of the very few people I would listen to regarding lifestyle and maybe his son is doing this in honour of his dads very successful work.

Summertimeblahness · 20/04/2025 09:46

It’s great that his son is continuing his dad’s work. What big shoes to step in to but what a privilege it must be.

Everyone has different approaches to losing weight and mm obviously isn’t for you. WLI aren’t for everyone either.

springintoaction321 · 20/04/2025 09:46

@badgermushroomm fair point.

I honestly don't know what his motivations might be, and was playing devil's advocate

springintoaction321 · 20/04/2025 09:47

I always liked Michael Moseley and have a couple of his books as I'm a thinner prediabetic as he was.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 20/04/2025 09:48

I loved Michael Mosely TBF.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/04/2025 09:50

I followed Mosleys blood sugar diet, lost a significant amount of weight, there was an excellent free website and active forum - all free, no pressure to buy books/diet plans.

MrsEverest · 20/04/2025 09:52

Pinkballoon5 · 20/04/2025 08:02

Michael Mosley had a really good understanding of effective weight loss, and quite easy to find out how without spending money. If you don't want to read his son's material, just don't read the Mail. It is probably paywalled anyway. There are side effects to those drugs and if I was on them I would be interested in a doctor explaining.

Edited

There are side effects to all drugs. Some
of the worst side effects I’ve dealt with have been the side effects of obesity. Including people who are quite simply too fat to breathe. Those people need help. Their obesity is life threatening.

I learned some things from Michael Mosley and have never purchased any of his books. The principles were usually distilled in various newspapers (I don’t read the Daily Mail). But in any event it’s perfectly fine to ‘cash in’
or ’make a living’ as others would say.

XiCi · 20/04/2025 09:54

So you'd rather give your money to big pharma instead? So hypocritical. Don't see much wrong with someone trying to help people lose weight healthily instead of pumping themselves with drugs when we have no idea of the long term effects of them.

Jeez. Ignore him if you're gonna get triggered. Personally I like reading diet advice and ignore it as I see fit. Dr Mosley did a lot of good stuff that I never paid for.

Violashifts · 20/04/2025 09:59

CaptainFuture · 20/04/2025 07:59

Exactly! But that won't go down well here!
All hail and bow at the altar of injections!.

Don't be nasty. For some people having tried for years, to finally have good hormones is a revaluation. Have concerns but don't be a dic about it. Lose weight how you like.

I like the Moseleys as po have said at least they are qualified and are not random influencers from LL Towie etc.

SirRaymondClench · 20/04/2025 09:59

Yeah you're right OP. People should just inject themselves with fuck knows what rather than make conscious decisions about what they cram in their gob.

RhaenysRocks · 20/04/2025 10:02

Sickofitandmore · 20/04/2025 08:06

He would constantly adapt and bend it to whatever the trend was. For instance making the fast 800 keto plan which was not true to the original 5:2, fast 800 or the blood sugar diet.

But none of those things are actually contradictory. Most people's jobs are "cashing in" on people's desire for some want or need and I don't begrudge people making a living. Noone is forced to buy the books. As interests and understanding evolve it's not unreasonable for someone in MM industry to incorporate those elements. He didn't go from "avoid carb" to "eat loads of pasta" . Fast 800, low sugar/ GI and keto are really just names for the same thing and 5/2 is simply a way of patterning it.

WLI actually do nothing at all to melt or burn fat. You still have to eat below a number of calories, avoid high fat foods and sugar and ideally exercise. The jabs simply make that easier to achieve by suppressing appetite and "food noise". Used for some months, it breaks the habits and emotional triggers so hopefully they can be dispensed with once loss is achieved. MM son is using a trusted name to provide a diet plan for those people. I don't begrudge people making a living.
