I was going to have lunch at a cafe yesterday. It was raining quite heavily at times. Walked into the cafe and the smell of wet dog made me heave. The rest of the cafe was full of a mother and baby group. I went elsewhere.

Why should she stop going to restaurants? Restaurants are for people, not dogs.

If it allows dogs then it’s for both. Some even serve food for dogs too!

Shopping centres too - cant be a good day out for the poor dogs!

There seems to be quite an influx of dogs everywhere, really. It makes my life difficult (adult dd with learning disability has a phobia of dogs), and is ever increasing it seems.

I'm in the same position. DD has SN and is very scared of dogs as a result of various badly behaved ones jumping at her. We were at the garden centre yesterday and two dogs were barking at each other and trying to go for each other. I had to take her away from the checkout in tears.

I don't dislike dogs but they are everywhere and it makes it very difficult to take DD anywhere.

I’m 60 and have been seeing dogs in cafes, restaurants and pubs since I was a young child.

If you don’t like it, go to a place where they don’t allow dogs, or stay at home.

I'm not far off your age and never ever saw a dog in a shop or cafe, restaurant etc when I was young. It's only in the last few years that dogs have appeared everywhere. If you had your way those of us who are allergic to dogs would be completely unable to use all indoor public places. As it is I've had to leave cafes and restaurants because someone brings a hairy mutt out for lunch.

Ineedanewsofa · 19/04/2025 19:12

We’ve just come back from our holiday (with both child and dog!) We booked a dog caravan in the dog area of the site, took the dog everywhere she was allowed, even ate at the onsite pub, making sure we booked a ‘dog’ table. If she’d have kicked off at any point I’d have taken her out, exactly like I did if DC kicked off when they were a toddler (have vivid memories of carting a planking DC out of Nando’s under my arm!). I always make sure places are dog friendly before we go there and would never subject Ddog to being carted round the shops. Any fault lies with inconsiderate dog owners…

Showing your true colours there OP. Nasty piece of work.

It is a huge food safety issue.

Edited

It really is

but shhh you will upset the Dogstapo

All the places you mention are businesses. They will have worked out whether having dogs in there makes or loses them money. Dogs are no more of an issue in cafes than humans.in fact probably less so as they aren’t sneezing and coughing or touching surfaces passing on illnesses that can cause issues in humans

Karasis · 19/04/2025 19:12

@ToKittyornottoKitty and everyone else who thinks that talking about the behaviour of children on a thread about is some kind of gotcha - it makes no difference that you find kids annoying. None. Kids are not going to get banned from shops. Dogs might be. Kids have human rights. Dogs don't. Of COURSE a child enjoys a restaurant more than a dog, what planet are you on? If your kids can't behave in restaurants that's sad for you, but it doesn't mean other children don't enjoy them.

Love this response

honestly how people compare a child to a dog baffles me.

probably call them fur babies barf

I mean it’s not really that difficult to understand though is it? There’s many reasons why. Some people can’t have children and end up treating pets like surrogate kids. Some have them as support animals. Whilst I emphasise to a point how it can seem a little overwhelming frequently seeing dogs everywhere, there’s no need to be snarky about what people call their pets. I mean they are members of the family after all - more so when it’s just you and your dog 🙂

What do you think dogs are going to do to you while you're eating?

MomGran · 19/04/2025 19:13

Sadly, it's everywhere around the dog. If the dog shakes his fur, the almost invisible pet dander flies off in all directions. If you are nearby, it will go onto your food and drink.

JaneyDC · 19/04/2025 19:13

I hate it when food establishments allow dogs. The other week, my DH and baby accidentally went to one for lunch. Bloody annoying dog kept barking loudly and making both myself and my baby jump. The fucking idiot owner was going, "oh dear, please don't do that, Bailey!" in the most pathetic attempt to stop the dog from barking. Disclaimer, it obviously didn't work. And then another dog came in and kept trying to escape and go under our table. Urgh.

People that treat dogs like children and/or friends need to grow the fuck up. They're animals. Pets.

No saying you hope their dog drops dead is plain nasty and says a lot about you. Awful

GRex · 19/04/2025 19:14

DH is extremely allergic, so it's very problematic for us if dogs are inside. Dogs should ideally have a separate area if allowed alongside added filtration, like smokers used to.

I have a dog and I take her in to cafes/restaurants but I’m very strict about behaviour. She sits under table or on our lap (nowhere near the table) and no sitting on chairs.

No it isn’t. I have a milk allergy should I demand all cafes and restaurants stop serving dairy milk to avoid the risk of cross contamination. The businesses obviously value the pooch pound more than yours - it’s up to the businesses which customers they value more at the end of the day.

This!!!! If you’re that germ phobic stay at home. You have no idea what goes in the kitchen or en route to the table. Eating in the same room as a dog is the least of your problems.
