I love dogs and have my own but I don’t feel the need to take them everywhere. Even national trust gardens have started allowing dogs in - we went to a formal garden last week and there were badly behaved, poorly trained, unsocialised dogs everywhere. All barking at each other, pooing on the paths and tripping people up on their extendable leads as they haven’t been trained to walk to heel. It drives me mad. Our dog is well behaved and I’d happily walk him in a NT estate or parkland where appropriate but not a formal garden - he’s big and whilst quiet and well trained, not everybody likes dogs and I wouldn’t want to ruin anyone else’s day out. My ND sibling is afraid of dogs (apart from ours) and this current trend for allowing dogs everywhere is really making life uncomfortable for him. There are even dogs in supermarkets and shops now - the poor dogs don’t even enjoy it, so why aren’t the owners training their dogs to be happy staying at home alone for reasonable periods of time. The trouble is a new type of inexperienced dog owner who anthropomorphises their dogs and treats them like children or even worse “fur babies” 🤢 instead of training them and treating them as they want to be treated, like loved pets, but not human-equivalents.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 20/04/2025 22:08

The National Trust won’t allow them in for long if they behave like that. We used to take our dog into a cafe garden in a NT property until dogs were banned thanks to some bloody idiot and their ill mannered dog.

Totally agree
All this fur baby nonsense is an example of anthropomorphic thinking

Totally agree too.

I live in a very ‘dog-friendly’ part of the country and they are everywhere, even in the most unsuitable places. The dogs look stressed, and I don’t for one minute believe that they wouldn’t be happier at home in the peace and quiet dozing in a nice sunny spot.

The problem is (and I think this is worse since lockdown), people haven’t trained their dogs to be happy at home alone. There’s absolutely no reason why a well trained dog can’t be left for a few hours at home. I grew up with several dogs and we never, ever took them out to cafes or shops. They were perfectly happy.

And for what it’s worth, my beef with dogs in cafes, shops and restaurants isn’t a hygiene issue, it’s because they get in the way. Badly behaved ones also bark, jump up and nose around you, which I really don’t want when I’m eating, drinking or trying to buy things.

Worse, when the dog gets in your face and behaves badly the owners don’t even apologise! It’s so rude.

I'll risk getting germs from humans, but will avoid dogs because:

https://people.com/human-interest/man-who-lost-arms-legs-nose-after-being-licked-by-dog-wont-give-up-pup/

Dogs are filthy vermin, it is astounding to me that they are allowed in so many places. Those who have dogs don't like being told they are filthy mingers, and there's just no reasoning with such people.

I bet many places are losing custom because so many of us avoid them because of there being dogs.

After getting a rare blood infection from a dog's lick and having his legs, hands and nose amputated, Greg Manteufel still "loves" his dog.

In your workplace Are humans under the table licking their own genitals? Are humans sitting with uncovered bums eating their dinner? Do the humans have fleas?

Oh come on how many threads have you read on here about the disgusting things that women have dumped a date for, including coming down to find the bloke sitting naked on their leather furniture eating a bowl of cereal! And as for fleas, I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve had to pre-emptively delouse my hair because of friends children having nits!

Jacarandill · 20/04/2025 22:40

ilikemethewayiam · 20/04/2025 19:49

FFS! This again. My dog comes with me everywhere dogs are allowed because I love his company and want him with me. If you don’t like dogs don't go where dogs are allowed! I don’t go to places where there’s kids if I can possibly help it because of awful parents who allow their kids to run riot and annoy those of us who don’t like being around them. I’ve had snot nosed toddlers run up to my table and stick their fingers in my dinner! I’ve seen them doing the same in the salad bars in restaurants. And people say my dog is unhygienic 🤣

Really? Not a little smidgen of exaggeration there at all?

You don’t like children; some people don’t like dogs. Many people do like dogs but don’t want them to jump on them. Besides, cafes and restaurants are for people, not pets.

I think most of us have had a lot more issues with dogs being annoying and intrusive in cafes than children.

Another example of yea but,no but , deflection . In your workplace or local restaurant are humans under the table licking their genitalia? Expected Behaviour and habit of dogs isn’t comparable to expected behaviour and habit of humans

I strongly suspect that a lot of the dog owners on this thread are the same people who wash their loo brush in their dishwasher.

Why would you think I’m exaggerating? I’m not dismissing anyone else’s stories about their experiences with dogs. I have no reason to disbelieve some peoples stories about badly behaved dogs in some situations. I have experienced both scenarios that I stated when out at restaurants. I had to ask the waiter to replace my meal after a random toddler came over to my table and before I could stop them, they stuck their fingers in it. The parent did apologise and the waiter kindly replaced it, and in the other scenario I, along with other patrons, had to inform staff that a group of young children were treating the salad bar like a sandpit, while their parents had their backs to them paying no attention! Do you think this sort of thing doesn’t happen?

Annoyeddd · 20/04/2025 23:53

GoodLaudanum · 20/04/2025 21:05

Well most humans tongues have not just recently been licking their own arse

I wonder how many humans are capable of doing this?
Also referring to a previous poster you don't need a dog sitter if you are going out for an hour or so whether at home or on holiday. I have always felt that taking a dog out for a walk is for the dogs health and fitness - where I live I see people with their fur babies in doggy prams.
Ours is quite happy to sleep while we are out (have set up the dash cam to see what happens) just woke up for the statutory bark at the postman then back to the basket.

I own dogs and i love my dogs but i really don’t get the need for people to take their dogs absolutely everywhere with them! Its not like the dogs enjoy crowded shops and restaurants, its selfish and needy of the owners.

Sadly, much of this comes from lockdown - when people worked from home and got dogs for companionship.and exercise. Now that many of these owners have returned to their workplace, many dogs have separation anxiety.

Hopefully the dog craze will be over soon and we can get back to normal with no dogs being allowed in human spaces such as shops, eateries and hospitals etc. They are only animals, after all.

No but, to be completely honest, I did once give my DH a BJ just before we popped out for a nice pub lunch. So I guess there’s that….👀

Not underneath the pub table though. That would have been public indecency. From genitals in mouth until I had the fork in my mouth was probably twenty minutes.

In your workplace Are humans under the table licking their own genitals? Are humans sitting with uncovered bums eating their dinner? Do the humans have fleas?

Well for some of them I reckon the only reason they don't do the first one is they can't reach!

Hands down pants and eating food/touching surfaces, peeing on the toilet floors, not washing hands after the toilet and touching surfaces, smearing shit up the walls and over toilet seats, farting loudly wherever they are, menstrual products left on the floor in the toilets, wiping bogies on furniture, chewed food left on tables, chairs & floors, changing nappies on tables, fortunately I've yet to witness someone whipping out a potty, but I've heard of it happening. And maybe fleas but more likely head lice or scabies. Not to mention the colds, coughs and stomach bugs you're exposed to because people come out when they're ill and cough and sneeze all over the place and touch everything.

And that's before you get to the state some bedrooms are left in.

And this is a 'middle' place, not a rough pub, I know you're probably going to be all "Eww I wouldn't be somewhere that people did that" but the truth is that it's everywhere, you're surrounded by it. The 'nicer' places like mine just do a better job of cleaning it up and keeping it under wraps.

I don't think that dogs need to be everywhere and I'm my dogs owner not their mother, and they're treated like dogs because apart from the fact they're my responsibility, it'd be doing them a disservice to not treat them like dogs.

But humans aren't automatically pristine and perfect, some of them are downright disgusting and they do it all the more in public places because they get some kind of kick out of knowing someone else has to clean up after them. At least animals don't do that.

😁 just pointing out that saying ‘they lick genitals’ applies to humans as well as dogs. Though admittedly humans are not as flexible as animals (not sure if it’s a male dog thing either - I’ve not seen my female dog cleaning her own arse, she waits for me to do it with a wet wipe before bedtime, and I’ve seen her sniff male dogs dangly bits but again, not seen her lick any).

As for licking bum holes, rimming is not for me. But I’ve had friends who say they’ve tried it. Not sure if they’ve popped out for a coffee afterwards though.

I agree. Im highly allergic to dogs and they trigger my asthma. I take antihistamines daily and another tablet, which helps my allergy related asthma along with inhalers. Some dogs affect me more than others and it doesn’t matter what medication I take.

SquashedSquid · 21/04/2025 04:57

Why do people keep mentioning service dogs? Service dogs are dogs that, y'know...work with the services...

You probably mean assistance dogs. Not all assistance dogs are Guide dogs, either. Stop calling them service dogs. It's annoying.

SquashedSquid · 21/04/2025 05:06

M777 · 20/04/2025 18:44

We ended up buying a holiday home on a site because of this issue. We advertise as allergy friendly, no animals ever. And kindly request no service animals for the same reason.

If you mean assistance dogs, not service dogs, that's absolutely appalling.

Children pick their noses, stick their hands down their pants and just about everywhere, are allowed to roam and make noise….. they are allowed to touch the table and utensils. Dogs are kept under tables on leads. Yeah not comparable. I’d take dogs over children in restaurants any day.
