It’s common courtesy to ask first before you assume you can bring a dog in though. Some people are frightened of dogs. My family and friends have dogs and either ask first or don’t bring their dog out.
Peoples manners seems to have gone out the window.

It's not difficult
Dogs welcome, no need to ask
Anything else you ask, although I assume likely not

This. Half the time you don’t even realise they’re in there until the owner leaves- unlike children!

Must agree, I frequent dog friendly places a LOT (live in a rural tourist area). I’ve never seen a dog pee or poop in a cafe, or eat off plates, or sit on bar stools, or bother other people, or have fights, or woof continuously. You guys must be very unlucky in your choice of cafe or maybe exaggerating just a teeny tiny bit????

Pinkpeanut27 · 20/04/2025 17:50

Honestly I also hate it . I’m not a dog person and am actually allergic to dogs .
obviously people have dogs and want to take them out I get it but some people don’t like them
and have a right to a dog free venue .
id a place says dog friendly I’ll generally avoid but most places don’t advertise.

twice this weekend I’ve been sitting eating or having coffee and I have had a dog jump
up at me repeatedly as I’m sitting at my table and its owner either ignore it or tell me it’s friendly and get really offended when I’ve mentioned Im allergic . And I’ve had to move as they don’t control their dog !

Deuteragonist · 20/04/2025 18:01

As a dog owner (that never takes our dogs into food areas), I have sympathy for the non-owners frustrations. I've seen so many other dog-owning people that are clueless about dog behaviour. Some dogs are clearly being used as surrogate children. Two most common clues are the dog being held like it was a baby human, or the human talking continually to the dog as thought it was a child. Neither are good for the dog.

Sheeparelooseagain · 20/04/2025 18:03

I don't mind them put please keep them off the seats. I have seen quite a few dogs on sofas etc recently, leaving lots of dog hair behind when they leave.

I agree people on MN sometime seems as though they are exaggerating a fair bit with various things. But in this case, just because you haven’t experienced it, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen and frequently.

This week alone (I have been out and about a bit due to Easter hols) I have experienced -

Dog in a Starbucks laying under and unoccupied table away from its owner.

Dog in independent cafe sitting on the table top. Another dog in same place barking frequently.

Dog in pub garden off lead and continually coming underneath our table while we were eating.

Dog in our local library, laying on mat where they do the children’s reading groups.

On last week before schools broke up, a parent allowed their dog loose in playground at pick up. It knocked over a toddler sibling. School sent out immediate email saying no dogs allowed on premises at all now – plenty of dog owning parents now up in arms.

I’m sick of these threads claiming the people who take issue with the above ‘hate dogs’. That is not the case – I like dogs very much and have owned two of them. The problem is inconsiderate owners and staff allowing badly behaved animals to remain.

I’m also sick of these threads comparing young children to dogs – children must socialise and learn to behave and interact in restaurant, cafe, retail and community settings. They will grow up, get jobs become tax-paying members of society. Dogs are not – they are pets whose purpose is for their owner’s pleasure only.

knor · 20/04/2025 18:29

1000000% agree
i like dogs but aren’t obsessed and suddenly they’re everywhere, invited to everything and people don’t even seem to ask to bring them to your house. People look at me like I’m mad when I say I don’t want dogs around my toddler.
at restaurants, I feel sorry for the dogs as they don’t look particularly happy.
Hygiene also worries me. my sister has a dog that is quite sweet and soooo many times waiters have stroked her then gone to serve food.

I understand that but parents need to actually parent, not allow their kids to run around or bother other people. I remember the look I got from a kid's father when I told him to go back to his own table. I was eating and even if I wasn't I don't want to be bothered by someone else's kid. I've seen kids running around, trying to get into the kitchen, getting under waiting staff's feet. Maybe I'm lucky but I've never seen a dog do that.

No she’s simply pointing out dogs shouldn’t be roaming round cafes and neither should children. I’ve seen none of the former doing this but loads of the latter and it’s bloody annoying.

It’s annoying when A child is constantly being compared to a dog. They are a human being. A dog is an animal. They are two very different things. It’s not that hard to understand. A dog should be brought up to be a dog and not a human. End of.

asrl78 · 20/04/2025 18:40

I am not a dog person but generally like animals, but I don't have a problem with dogs in cafes/restaurants as long as they are not causing an obstruction. Even on trains they are not a problem unless sprawled across the aisle and you have to step over them to get to the door. It is the same everywhere, people that have clearly failed to socialise/properly train their dogs and/or stand there completyely blocking footpaths fawning over each others dog are the problem.

M777 · 20/04/2025 18:43

Kardamyli2 · 20/04/2025 08:25

The problem for me is where its not obvious that a cafe/restaurant is dog friendly. It wouldn't be the first time that I've ordered and been eating when someone arrives with a dog. I then have to leave to avoid an asthma attack.
To use your analogy, it's like someone with a nut allergy having chopped nuts sprinkled on their food half way through a meal.

What would help me would be a prominent notice at entrances of cafes etc stating whether or not dogs are allowed.

Yes, this
we need it in the website
on Tripadvsior
and in prominent signs on the door

the we would avoid these places

but we can be having a nice meal, not cheap with 5 of us, and a dog sits next to us. And we have to go.

usually staff don’t want to say anything to the dog owners

we've tried asking the owners ourselves politely, but that usually goes down badly, so now we ask the staff before we enter.

M777 · 20/04/2025 18:44

We ended up buying a holiday home on a site because of this issue. We advertise as allergy friendly, no animals ever. And kindly request no service animals for the same reason.

None of this changes the fact that children should also be taught to behave
Key word is also

Yes children should be taught to behave but we are talking about dog owners not parents so they shouldn’t even be compared to one another.

I would agree this would be useful for everyone
Largely I assume if they don't say they are dog friendly then they aren't. But it must be frustrating for you to find out this isn't the case

abracadabra1980 · 20/04/2025 18:52

Ditto all the previous yawns. The needs of small businesses have changed and they need to do what they have to do, to attract customers and survive.

Jumpers4goalposts · 20/04/2025 18:58

YABU don’t go to dog friendly places there’s plenty of other options.

Jacarandill · 20/04/2025 19:01

Exactly this. I love dogs but find it really annoying. The dogs hate it too.

They’re aren’t where I live. They really are everywhere.

JustMeAndTheFish · 20/04/2025 19:49

I live near the Lake District and Hadrians wall - very outdoorsy dog walking country.
I hate dogs in pubs and restaurants. I’m allergic to dogs (much more so as a child) so had nothing to do with them growing up and have never had one as a pet.
I do not want to have my lunch or dinner surrounded by somebody’s slavering dog.

ilikemethewayiam · 20/04/2025 19:49

FFS! This again. My dog comes with me everywhere dogs are allowed because I love his company and want him with me. If you don’t like dogs don't go where dogs are allowed! I don’t go to places where there’s kids if I can possibly help it because of awful parents who allow their kids to run riot and annoy those of us who don’t like being around them. I’ve had snot nosed toddlers run up to my table and stick their fingers in my dinner! I’ve seen them doing the same in the salad bars in restaurants. And people say my dog is unhygienic 🤣

Where do you live sound like a nice place to visit with my dogs

FastFood · 20/04/2025 19:54

Each time this topic comes up I imagine A Hieronymus- Bosch-like scene, where a hord of bloodthirsty dogs poo and pee everywhere in coffee-shop, some of them are on the tables eating food, others eat little children whilst a lot of people are screaming in the background.

in real life, I go everyday to my local coffee shop, with my dog (shudder), there's always a lot of dogs and except for the odd bark now and then, everything goes perfectly well, no poop, no pee, no mayhem.
