But if you are that allergic to dog hair, you must have reactions every single day from being in proximity to people who have dogs that aren’t with them…

Yes if a dog is around or a cat I have allergy symptoms? Therefore I have an allergy?

I hate entitled people who think businesses should be run to suit them and them only. Absolutely wrong to take dogs places they’re not allowed. Absolutely not wrong to take them places they are allowed.

I used to work in a convenience shop and there was a sign up in black and white ‘no dogs except guide dogs’. The amount of times people just walked in and they weren’t assistance or guide type dogs. I would actually debate around whether ‘assistance’ dogs are actually required for some people and not just used an excuse for some people.
i used to say to them that dogs aren’t allowed. Some respected and tied their dogs outside majority of the time they just gave abuse. We served hot food as well. It just isn’t hygienic and I don’t care what anyone thinks or says. Big supermarkets also don’t allow dogs inside either so I don’t get why convenience shops are any different.

I meant checking for signs on the door.

if there is no sign they bring the dog in. Several of my friends assume it as it is convenient to them. The cafe owner says nothing, perhaps doesn’t notice. Who wants a scene in their establishment? If no sign then they assume the affirmative.

Annoyeddd · 20/04/2025 11:07

Fortunately the pub near us which serves good food is big enough to have dog friendly side and a no dog side. I don't want to eat where someone has a dog on their lap at the next table and leans across for fuss.
It is also child friendly at lunchtime but not in the evening.
Trying to get round dogs, buggies and fidgety kids can be difficult for many people.

Dogs don’t drool everywhere or hang around strangers( don’t think my dog drools at all). They’re on leads under tables that their owners are eating at. Children in restaurants however are more often than not far more troublesome and noisy.

I’d prefer restaurants to be child free you’d prefer dog free. Thankfully it’s down to the owner and their eye for business. Don’t like it then go to the huge number of dog free places available. I avoid restaurants and cafes likely to be full of children, there are other options 🤷‍♀️

Nope they're not all on leads under tables. I recently went for a meal (my birthday) and the dog was sitting between it's owners on the seat where another human would soon be sitting.

I love all animals but some people are taking their love of their pets too far and causing this, I don't know quite how to put it, division? that is appearing on this thread.

But no sign on a door does not mean dogs are banned. I would never enter an establishment that had a sign up saying "Dogs Welcome", unfortunately very few places say "No Dogs".

But if it’s the hair, you would barely be able to leave your house! Pet owners are generally carrying a lot of their pets fur and dander around…

Just wondering how that works for people with a severe allergy. Whether an animal is actually present or not will be immaterial surely?

Nope. I spend very little time near people I don't know. Rarely use public transport and the office I work in has very few dog owners. Even those who have dogs dont come to work in the same clothes they wore when grooming their dog. Walking past a dog owner in a shop or standing next to one outside would not bother my allergy.

No, it doesn't work like that. Sitting next to someone covered in dog would be a problem for me, but I don't find myself in many situations where that is likely.

i don’t that have much of a severe allergy where I can’t be around people that have dogs/cats. If the dogs/cats are there my eyes start streaming and I’m sneezing. I don’t want to happen. So is it peoples fault now for having allergies? You can have a mild
or a severe allergy. That’s how they work. It’s the same with nut allergies. There are people that can’t be around any form of nut? Should they then not leave the house? Please stop trying to deflect on it and just respect that not everyone can be around animals in restaurants due to fear, allergies or wherever they may be. There are signs up for people that have nut allergies for people not to consume nuts so it should be the same for pets.

How is a dog sitting on a floor unhygienic? You’ve got more crap on your shoes than small dog paws. Kids whose fingers get god knows where actually use the tables.

They ARE unhygienic. You can wash them everyday in your Keihls and brush their teeth every day, as though they were a human being. Although I doubt that is even the case.
But they'll still lick their own and other dogs private parts and release fur and dander all over the place.

They still all have the potential to turn on a small child that is stroking them / giving them unwanted attention and they still pee and crap wherever and whenever they feel like it.

I don't have my dog around me at home when we're eating and I wouldn't pay to eat around other entitled people's dogs.
I would actively avoid anywhere that allows them inside. I like dogs but there's a time and a place for them.
Cafés that allow them must be okay with cleaning up dog mess and that isn't somewhere that I would want to eat. It has gotten so much worse since everyone bought dogs during lockdown, as before they only seemed to be in the outdoor seating areas.

Ironically there are loads of child-free places. I often see dogs allowed into places which children are not allowed into. If only there were such clearly demarcated dog-free places...

I wish I could find these child free places! I've never been bothered by a dog in a cafe but seen plenty of badly behaved kids and had kids coming up to my table. The parents don't seem to like it if you tell their little darling to go back to their own table!

😂Dogs don’t pee merrily inside. They know they can’t, are adept at storing and if they really need to go whine.

A dog sitting under a cafe table by your feet is no different to one sitting by your feet at home and is no more unhygienic than shoes.Being overly concerned with cleanliness can be detrimental to health, particularly for children.Do you know where children stick their fingers?

No child should be left to roam round a cafe and crawl under somebody else’s table to pet a dog.

No

Regardless of cleanliness they are animals.

We don't allow other animals in shops and cafes, so why are dogs allowed in?

Because other animals aren’t on leads or housetrained and owners haven’t decided that they’d like to accept them in the establishments they own.

Would depend on the level of allergy.
I have a colleague covered in pet hair. Im OK working with him.
If I go into his house, my eyes are itching within 10 min
Probably just more hair in the house than on him in an open office.
Bit like low v high pollen count

OonaStubbs · 20/04/2025 13:20

All dogs should be banned from shops and eateries. If people want to eat with their dogs they should do so at home.

Also no dog should be left to roam around and licking peoples hands either while eating. I’ve also witnessed dogs peeing in a restaurant who have now banned dogs from
coming in thankfully. That’s disgusting. I’ve also saw dogs bark and growl when a child innocently comes up to them. Just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. That’s why leads exist for dogs because they need to kept under control. A restaurant isn’t a place for them. Dogs also
lick their private parts and children’s hands can easily be washed. It’s a mad world where people think dogs should be allowed in food establishments more than children. Madness lol

I don't care that other people are not fond of my dog. That is their right.
However, telling me to not take my dog to places where she is welcome is just really entitled behaviour.
It would be like me going to soft play and moaning it is full of kids.

Except soft plays were designed for children. Cafes were not designed for dogs.

Try again.

Some cafes allow dogs. So dogs in them in is fine.
