Quite a cold response. Not everyone likes dogs. I particularly am not a fan of being in restaurants and seeing a dog there. I find it actually quite cruel on the dog with all the food about. Either leave the dog with a sitter, outside the place or don’t bring the dog.

No thanks.its completely cafe owners choice. Cafe and restaurant owners need bums on seats. All the dog friendly places I go to are often bursting at the seams. They’re seem to have better atmosphere and service and to be a bit qwerkier and a bit more interesting. Dogs and their owners are welcome, often they have treats and bowls of water. Dog owners aren’t cruel to their dogs. My dog doesn’t go when hungry, loves to be with us and people watch. She knows she can’t have our food at home so cafes are no different. We’ll carry on looking up dog friendly cafes whilst you go to the huge array of dog free alternatives

Of ffs. You really think my 6 month old baby was attacked by a dog off a lead in a playground because it sensed that either I or my baby didn't like dogs??!

Or that, while sitting on a bench facing the other way, not even knowing there was a dog anywhere around, a dog came and pawed at my back purely because it somehow sensed that I don't like dogs? Don't be so idiotic.

And I think it's fair to justify my dislike of dogs being around me and my children in cafes etc by referring to the traumatic experience where my 6 month old baby was attacked by a dog. To quote you .. can't you see that?

I can’t believe people here are blaming the child for the dog attacking them. Dogs can turn on anyone and people need to start taking responsibility that dogs are actually animals and not humans. I was also attacked by a dog as a child and I’m not particularly keen on them. Dogs should be kept on leads at all times. My husband was also bitten by a German shepherd who was off their lead as well. Dogs like that need muzzles on them. It’s an absolute disgrace.

I genuinely don’t understand the “it’s cruel to dogs “ argument. My dog is fine being in cafes, she would rather be out with me than home alone. She manages at home when there’s food about so I don’t see the difference between there being food at home and food in a cafe? She knows she’s not entitled to either. If she’s in a cafe with me it tends to be because we’ve just been on a dog walk or we’re on holiday. So a sitter isn’t exactly an option.

I have a dog walker if I need to work in the office rather than wfh but she doesn’t do weekends, never found one that does. There aren’t dog sitters round here which you can book like a baby sitter . So not sure what else I could do. I’m not putting my dog in kennels when we’re on a dog friendly holiday in the uk just so I can pop in a cafe for an hour. She really wouldn’t like that.

Well I think it’s unhygienic and that’s just my opinion.

It's a bit weird saying oh just don't go there, you have a choice. I do have a choice because I live in the centre of an enormous city, but I've visited towns and villages recently where there's nowhere to get shopping or sit and eat without dogs present. My DC has a severe phobia of dogs, so it's been very difficult. I love dogs and used to have one myself, but we do need to have dog-free spaces for people with phobias, allergies, etc..

Or maybe people with phobias that affect their daily lives should get treatment/learn to manage their phobia.

Potnoodly · 20/04/2025 07:26

When I’m in a nice village and I’ve been for a nice walk I then like to go to a nice cafe. My dogs are usually with me.

Can you imagine the uproar if I left them in the car?!

How is a dog sitting on a floor unhygienic? You’ve got more crap on your shoes than small dog paws. Kids whose fingers get god knows where actually use the tables.

Dogs are animals and can turn on anyone at anytime no matter what you think or do. You can’t just go and get treatment and that’s the problem solved. It’s about dog owners not taking responsibility for their dogs behaviour around other people.

Summerbay23 · 20/04/2025 07:29

Surely it’s up to the business owners who they allow/market their business for?? If it’s a dog friendly business then great, I guess you then go somewhere that’s more your vibe?

MyFavouriteSpoon · 20/04/2025 07:31

I love dogs. But I got on a train the other day with my son who's terrified of them. 2 dogs with separate owners were lying in the aisle so that we had to try to step over them as the owners made a half hearted effort to get them under the tables. They were lovely dogs too, and both looked scared on the train, it was very crowded and they were clearly very conscious of the amount of people and noise. They didn't look relaxed at all. I also saw a dog being carried in a handbag at our city museum on Thursday. It was heaving with Easter holiday visitors, there's no way that would be a good experience for the dog.

These are two of many examples of why I am fed up of dog owners. Not dogs. Dog owners. Dogs are lovely. Dog owners are becoming more entitled and selfish the more dogs are allowed everywhere. Dogs don't want to be hemmed in by lots of strangers on a train, or having to be in a handbag at a noisy bright crowded museum. My son wants to go to the museum children's Easter event without fear that there will be dogs.

Dogs don’t just turn on anyone, that’s ridiculous. Dog owners sitting with their dog under a table are being responsible for their dogs behaviour.

If this was true then people wouldn’t keep dogs as pets. They don’t turn on people at any time.

Well I don’t eat my food off the floor so to me dogs in cafes aren’t a problem. The floors are unhygienic with or without dogs. I would absolutely agree they shouldn’t be on chairs, tables, licking plates. Never seen that happen though.

Oh my god, seriously!? Do you have a phobia? Have you tried "just getting treatment"!? My son is seriously phobic of dogs. I have tried CBT, therapy, exposure therapy for him. It doesn't work. Stop being so goady.

Sorrysunflower · 20/04/2025 07:34

My issue with dogs is that owners don’t seem to realise that their dog is their lifestyle choice, and that they shouldn’t let their decision to get a dog affect others.

It would be nice to be able to picnic in our local park but it’s impossible with the number of totally out of control dogs. I’ve had sandwiches stolen too many times.

That’s other people’s decision affecting my quality of life. If these people hadn’t decided to get a dog, these dogs simply wouldn’t have been bred in the first place. Dog owners have got to take 100% responsibility for their decisions, but they don’t, and our local park is riddled with dogs bounding out of control. It’s rubbish.

Viviennemary · 20/04/2025 07:37

Of course it shouldn't be allowed. And this nonsense about having dog food on the menu. Absolute madness.

MixedBananas · 20/04/2025 07:40

1 million percent.
I have stopped going to cafes and reaturants that allow dogs inside. It is revolting. Even holiday homes / hotels. Getting harder to find places without the mutts.
We stoooed holidaying in the UK last year due to them being everywhere and ruining our holiday for the last 3 years. We will be going to Turkey for our annual holidays.

We onlyneat out at certain places now and so the economy will be hit more ad I know many others who are doing the same.

The majority of dog owners do take responsibility for their dogs behaviour. My dog will not come up to anyone, she will not lick plates or cutlery, she behaves impeccably.

If she's with us it's either cos we're on a day out far from home and needed food or we're on holiday and not allowed to leave her in the accommodation alone.

We won't leave her alone all day, and we don't kennel to go abroad, which is entirely our choice since my last rescue who go so ill the once we did she pooed blood for a week after. Sitters are expensive so our family days out are dog friendly. Which often includes needing lunch and/or dinner.

More often than not we take a picnic or we'll get food and sit in the boot of our car looking at the view. Bought the car specifically to have enough space for kid & dog and to be able to do that. But sometimes if it's chillier, we'll sit down in the dog friendly cafe for a toasty or some soup. Dog behaves, dog is welcome. We are not your problem.

You have an issue with the minority of irresponsible owners. Over a third of UK households have a dog, you don't see every third table in a restaurant with a dog. Every third family in a shop with one. And when you do see one, they aren't all terribly behaved. Most will just pass you by.

Mumofyellows · 20/04/2025 07:42

There are also absolutely loads of cafes and restaurants which don't allow dogs so plenty for you to choose from where you don't have to be around them. I have 2 dogs and we do take them to dog friendly cafes and pubs if we are out for the day with them. They don't go near anyone, however we are usually inundated with people wanting to say hello to them.
It's not unhygienic, people are revolting, and probably far worse.
I personally don't want to be around lots of small children if I can avoid it so don't go to places which are generally full of kids.

My son was bitten by a blind dog and had a serious dog phobia. Best thing we did was to get him a dog. We’d never had one before. He loves them now.

But the problem isn’t the dogs it’s the owners. Obviously a guide dog is very different. The amount of dog poo around our area is a disgrace because people are lazy and don’t clean up after them. There are dogs next door to me that don’t get taken out at all and are obviously angry and barking at everyone that walks past because they need out and walked. When people are walking their dogs they should also be kept on leads and disciplined and dogs that have a tendency to be vicious should have muzzles on them. It isn’t that hard to do or understand. If you can’t cope with the responsibility of a dog then you shouldn’t have them

The reason cafe owners are choosing( and it’s completely down to them) to be dog friendly is to drive up income. It works. The dog friendly cafes are the busiest.

You do realise cafe owners make the choice as to being dog friendly or not. They own the premises not you.

That's just not true. If it was, the rescues wouldn't be overflowing. There wouldn't be puppies being dumped.

Have you been to Turkey before? I’m not sure it’s the place to go if you’re concerned about dogs being everywhere 😁. At least in the uk dogs tend to be with an owner rather than being in a pack of strays roaming about.
