Just this really
obviously not service dogs

but why all of a sudden is it ok for dogs to be allowed places where others are eating?!?

No, we won’t. Businesses choose policies that make them the most money. Currently for a lot, that includes those of us with dogs. And no, most places, at least where I live, do not serve halal.

Ivory towers and all that.

I give it 10 years, tops.

Ok, so all you dog owners telling people to go to stay in dog-free restaurants or guesthopuses, how do I find one then?

I just spent 10 minutes googling dog free restaurants and bed and breakfasts and all I was shown was dog friendly places.

There is only the option to look for 'pet friendly'. There is no option to search for 'pet-free'.

If I'm wrong please show me how I find these holy grail dog free cafe's, restaurants and guesthouses.

That sounds like a failure with websites and their search functions. But yes, blame people with dogs for that.

The thing is, though, as much as posters on MN insist that the majority hate dogs in pubs/cafes/shops, etc., the businesses are still allowing it. This can only be because it is profitable for them, suggesting the majority either like it or don't care either way.

If you don't like it do what the dog owners are doing, and vote with your cash. Go elsewhere. Pontificating on MN and threatening to kill people's much-loved pets because you're not allowed to demand that a privately owned business cater to your needs and your needs only to the detriment of their profit margins is pointless.

I'm not sure about this. Many just do it, and like most things the workers are too afraid to speak up. Some cafes actively have drinking bowls for dogs outside, but it's not the majority and certainly they are not encouraged inside. I went to the library with my DC and someone tried to bring their dog to the child's storytime session. The library!! People are thick.

Purplebunnie · 19/04/2025 22:03

I have no idea, I've never been in one. I'll take note of what the Cats Protection League say but the RSPCA are totally useless and I don't set much store by anything they say or do

Agree.
We’ve been dog owners for years and never felt the need to take our dogs everywhere with us.
Ive seen people drive their dogs to the retail park just so they can take them in to Pets at home, and then the idiot owners stand there whilst the poor NMW workers clean up their dog shit.

The last time I read a thread on this topic, a dog had crapped in the cafe where a pp had ordered lunch. Disgusting.

Just leave your fucking dogs at home or sit at an outside table!

I refuse to eat at places that have dogs inside now, I don’t want some pooch chasing it’s puppuccino cup around my feet on it’s stupid extendable lead whilst it tries to lick the last of the froth out, with it’s idiot owner giving me a simpering smile.

I don’t just go to pets at home, I go to Costa coffee then go to TKMaxx,& she sits in her trolley & gets lots of fuss. Allowed me to have a bit of a life without having to rely on sitters. She has separation anxiety & is a rescue.

outdooryone · 19/04/2025 22:03

I've spent the last week in Holland and Belgium. So nice to have fewer dogs - outdoors, none in cafes, lack of dog shit etc.
Then back to the UK and I can't walk down my own street without too many dogs.

UniqueRedSquid · 19/04/2025 22:03

Why do so many people not understand how the free market works?

Businesses are free to invite in who they like and customers are free to choose to go or not go as they wish.

Agreed. And dogs appear to be allowed in the most unexpected of places. I was trying to buy some new shows in a Clarks shoe shop a fortnight ago and couldn't as a dog kept bothering me (it was on a lead but a very very long one and the owners let it roam around). I asked the manager about it and he said dogs are allowed in the store and that he loves dogs. I just wanted to buy a pair of shoes!

There really is something to keep us all happy. It’s all about choice. There are cafes that welcome dogs. Cafes that don’t welcome dogs. Cafes that are child friendly. Cafes that aren’t particularly welcoming for children. Just choose one appropriate to what you want, instead of wanting all cafes to be what you want them to be. Maybe if parents took their children to parks and walking areas where a lot of these these cafes are based, instead of allowing them to sit on their devices at home waiting for their deliveroo of McDonald’s, then cafes wouldn’t need to rely so much on dog walkers to use their establishments. Honestly, most of the cafes in my area where there are parks and walks are mostly frequented by dog walkers. If dog walkers bring in the business then they’re going to cater for them. It’s as simple as that really…..

Good luck with that. For so many people, dogs are family. They aren’t going to give that up, whether you like it or not.

Don't you feel embarrassed to be admitting that you take your dog shopping with you? 🤢

Well virtually every dog owner on here is telling people that wish to eat sans-dog to go and eat in dog-free places?

Where are they?

If I want to eat in a room full of dogs I search it up quite easily.

I'm starting to think that dog-free cafes are made up to be honest.

Yabu choose a different one.
Dog walkers keep many places in business.

I think you're missing the point here. Many families (like mine, and a number of my friends) keep away from certain csfes BECAUSE dogs are allowed in 🤦🏼‍♀️

My son was attacked by a dog in a playground when he was 6 months old, sitting in his pram. The owners said 'oh he's never done anything like that before'. 🙄 As if I'm ever going to trust a dog out in public ever again.

Where on earth do you live? Pet heaven? If not deal with it, if more people want to take pets than don’t then it’s tough. What do you want? You with no pet going to eat with no one else that has a pet. Ok you pay 400 for your no pet place on your own

Exactly. It's really hard to find one which explicitly does not allow dogs (and which advertises that fact). One reason we keep up our membership to a certain public garden is because it's dog-free. No dogs are allowed at all. It has a couple of cafes in it, a playground, and means that we can have a trip out without having to have dogs roaming around us (or stepping in dog poo). Sadly these places are few and far between... and this one costs us a LOT in membership fees.

So if I moan about your kids whilst on hoilday you will book a sitter too? ….or not?

It would just be nice to go for breakfast occasionally without a steaming dog sat next to me.

Too much to ask nowadays clearly.

Have the cafe to you and your dogs - stuff everyone else.
