I didn't pay much attention to be honest. I didn't realise that a dog friendly place meant that nearly everyone there would have a dog - and that they would be having breakfast with us.

You didn’t realise that dog friendly places would have….dogs?

To me that’s just unhygienic.

Why? She's laying on the floor. The floor where thousands of shoes have walked in god knows what off the streets. But aside from that, what germs or viruses will she be giving off from the floor whilst someone is tucking into their panini?

🎻

Off to the dog free ‘spoons with you 🤷🏽‍♀️

Tickles me the amount of people claiming things like dogs doing their business next to them in cafes & pubs 🤣 this simply does not happen as much as the anti animal crowd claim 🙄

I happily take my dog into dog friendly & dog welcome places because she’s a good girl and quite honestly, if you live in the UK, at least half of the year the majority of patrons ARE dog owners because it’s so damn wet and no one else is out 😂 keep Britain in business for the fair weather folk, we do 🙌🏽

The smell of wet dog is really unpleasant.

Totally agree. It's disgusting. And only 30% currently disagreeing in OP's poll.

Boredlass · 19/04/2025 21:43

It’s not like the dogs are all over the kitchen. I don’t give a shit if there is a dog in a cafe. I love them in pubs even more

PoorPhaedra · 19/04/2025 21:46

We’ve just come home from a pub with a small beer garden. We sat outside and the table next to us had a small Labrador actually sat on the picnic table next to where the family were eating their food. Not on the seat - actually on the table next to their food.

If my child, or children, were frightened of dogs I would gently try to encourage them not to be. They often pick up fears from adults. It's quite significant that you said, "Children", and not, `"Child". There is something odd about more than one child in a family having the same irrational fear.

Children are scared of all sorts of things. I remember being scared of the vacuum cleaner (still am to a degree :)), of the spiky leaves on a tomato, and feathers, as a child. I outgrew those fears. I was scared and ran screaming on one occasion because a big dog came running towards me, barking, but it didn't put me off for life. A cat once bit me on the arm. However I like animals, all of them, and have had several pets.

Well trained dogs should be welcome in pubs, shops and restaurants; they lie down, they don't go around sniffing other people or scrounge food. If they do not behave they won't be allowed back. Simple.

It sounds as though the op has a phobia about dogs which is different to a fear and I sympathise with that but we can't restrict other people and their pets because of our phobias. I would rather not share space with a big spider and they are far more difficult to avoid! I do my best to deter them taking up residence in my home and try not to think about them.

My child picked up their fear from an irresponsible dog owner whose dog jumped on and then chased them. Twice! But it was just a puppy and it wasn't her fault it slipped its lead, blah blah (again, twice!). It was then compounded by all the dog owners that would deliberately allow their dog to approach my child despite their VERY obvious fear with 'she won't hurt you' and tuts and eye rolls as I'd have to stop my child literally running into a road to avoid their dog. It's also not easy to help a child recover from a phobia, especially if you don't know anyone with a well behaved dog you can see regularly.

I don't mind dogs at all, but I do hate irresponsible dog owners.

That is daft! They must have took up all the table.
But you can't really expect any sort of high hygiene standard on outside picnic tables. You are at the mercy of the elements and bird poo. Or birds in general. I once had a very aggressive robin try to get at my food. I had to keep swatting him away like he was a persistent fly.

MadamCholetsbonnet · 19/04/2025 21:50

It’s irrelevant what mumsnetters think.

The business owners who want to allow dogs can continue to allow them. There’s 13 million dogs in the UK, and their owners are the people most likely to be out and about, spending money in face to face locations rather than online. It’s just an economic reality.

Still places for dog haters to go so I can’t see the need for drama.

GoodLaudanum · 19/04/2025 21:50

Reflectionsreflections · 19/04/2025 21:38

I wasn't trying to avoid dogs when I booked the B&B. I don't dislike dogs.
Most of the guest houses were dog friendly so I just assumed it was the Cornwall way.

However, when we arrived and every guest had dogs it seemed a bit much. I didn't realise there would be 3 large dogs in the tiny breakfast area.

I didn't hate it - but I will definitely seek out dog free B&B's and guesthouses everywhere in the UK in future.

Liketheclappers · 19/04/2025 21:51

Most of our local cafes encourage owners and dogs to visit, actively selling "dog sausages / dog ice creams". These are the places I go to with my dog as we are made welcome. I wouldn't visit a non dog friendly cafe if I had her with me and that's also that business's choice. People also have a choice, if you don't like dogs then go where they're not welcome. It really is that simple.
Same with pubs, hotels etc, plenty of dog friendly / dog unfriendly places for everyone to choose from.
Some people just need to take a look at what's really important in life and stop moaning.

SmashFlight · 19/04/2025 21:51

Some places are dog friendly, some are not.
Not that hard to pick one that isn't.
No comparison but I'd take dogs in a Cafe over kids any day.. Each to their own. There are less kid free places than dog free ones for those of us that can't stand other people's whiny kids.
Up at our local pub the dogs rule the place and are allowed inside and off leash. Much better behaved than some of the locals.
But those who have reactive dogs are sensible enough to leave them at home. Nothing wrong with well behaved dogs in dog friendly places. There are always other options for the miserable ones who think their preference should be the rule.

Bird poo carries loads of really nasty illnesses. I would be far more concerned about that than a dog sitting there.

What demographic change?

Some cultures view dogs as impure, dirty, haram, etc. So just as most places serve Halal now to be inclusive, we will see a move towards dogs not being allowed in eating establishments and many other places. It can’t happen soon enough!

O0ps · 19/04/2025 21:42

Why? You can choose where to go. Why go to a pet friendly place an moan? Go somewhere else

Frequency · 19/04/2025 21:55

The thing is, though, as much as posters on MN insist that the majority hate dogs in pubs/cafes/shops, etc., the businesses are still allowing it. This can only be because it is profitable for them, suggesting the majority either like it or don't care either way.

If you don't like it do what the dog owners are doing, and vote with your cash. Go elsewhere. Pontificating on MN and threatening to kill people's much-loved pets because you're not allowed to demand that a privately owned business cater to your needs and your needs only to the detriment of their profit margins is pointless.

FURore. You're mad you! 😂

I wanna go in a cat cafe! 🐈

Realised I missed a trick with my first post, I could have done purrsonality 😂

Itchybritches · 19/04/2025 21:56

We have two gorgeous dogs and I’d definitely take them into a country pub or outdoor country cafe, but wouldn’t take them into shops, garden centres or anywhere inside in town. They’re dogs.

Worst I’ve seen - last month in a John Lewis department store - a couple trying to take a clearly nervous dog up an escalator and causing the people behind to wait. Absolute cruelty.
WHY? Why were multiple dogs barking and slobbering around the pillows and make up counters. I can’t imagine any dog enjoying a department store.

I thought cate cafes were not actually good for the cats?
Both RSPCA and Cats Protection have condoned them for starters.

skinnyoptionsonly · 19/04/2025 21:57

I was eating on a pub on a busy Friday evening, not so long ago. When I say busy, I mean like standing five deep at the bar with a seating area at the back for eating. You could barely hear yourself think

People were bringing in their pfbs dogs and I was thinking, what the fuck- poor dogs so loud. Must have been miserable. One particular couple were eating at one of those tables with silly high stools. And had to keep putting the dog on the lap because it was so busy and it was getting trodden on. Couple couldn’t eat properly. They might as well have been juggling a new born!

No, we won’t. Businesses choose policies that make them the most money. Currently for a lot, that includes those of us with dogs. And no, most places, at least where I live, do not serve halal.

GoodLaudanum · 19/04/2025 22:01

Ok, so all you dog owners telling people to go to stay in dog-free restaurants or guesthopuses, how do I find one then?

I just spent 10 minutes googling dog free restaurants and bed and breakfasts and all I was shown was dog friendly places.

There is only the option to look for 'pet friendly'. There is no option to search for 'pet-free'.

If I'm wrong please show me how I find these holy grail dog free cafe's, restaurants and guesthouses.

You're absolutely right. I can't stand dogs being everywhere. Fine to take them on a walk, but why do they need to go to cafes and shopping? 🤮
