To think I can't be the only person who doesn't know a single trans person

Seriously.

The news is full of people worrying about how the SC ruling will affect people who identify as trans.

Where are they? Not in my office (large organisation), my family or social groups. I don't come across any in the village where I live or when I go into town.

DD is at university and doesn't know any trans people.

Surely, I can't be the only one?

And in the others?

my friend Jenny, a straight cis woman has been misgendered all her life, people have said they thought she was a man until she was told her name and then assumed that she was a ‘badly passing’ transwoman. She’s been spit at, attacked, verbally abused and had security called on her. She was terrified to use the toilet in public as a result.

she was assigned female at birth and has never identified as anything else - she is distraught by the ruling but hey! It’s all about the trans community - right?!!

'Transwomen' broke the social contract around women's expectations of single sex spaces being respected. That was very unfortunate and has very unfortunate consequences.

I'm very sorry for your friend and those actions are despicable, but the answer here isn't for women to just roll over and accept men in women's spaces forever. The answer is to clarify the law and rebuild trust. The trans community will have a huge amount to do in that regard.

How do you know the people you know aren’t trans? Have you seen their genitals or their GRC? Or can you “just tell”?.

Lol. We can tell.

Genuine question, for those pleased about the ruling and feel it should be enforced, how would you go about addressing if you walked into a designated female toilet and any of these people were using the facilities.

Is this supposed to be a gotcha? If so, I don't get it. They're all trans men - biological women, aren't they? If so, a non-issue as they're using the correct space for their biological sex. In fact, go to the gym with a TM. Even with a beard and lots of muscle, you can still tell they are biologically female (much like you can tell about all in the picture).

I was walking along London Wall a few weeks ago and was behind a very tall, slim woman, the sex assumed solely based on hair, jewellery and outfit. There was something off about the way they walked though, and the jewellery looked odd too. There was just something that made me pretty sure she was a TW. I noticed a group of men do a double-take as they walked passed her, but it wasn't a good double-take, more a wtf. As they turned to walk down a side street, I saw they were a biological man.

Most women can always tell. Yes, it we might not notice immediately, but we always notice there's something off.

How someone walks is fundamentally different between males and females- the female pelvis naturally sways whereas males walk with a lot less lateral hip movement. Humans can accurately determine sex very easily based on walking patterns.

I know 3 or 4, though they aren't exactly my personal friends they are 1 degree away (related to a friend for example)

This thread has made me feel sick. I feel like i have gone back to the dark ages. So ignorant and unempathetic. Do we have to experience things to be able to imagine how they feel and how difficult it might be? Ugh.
I know people who are transgender. They are just people. Be careful how unkind you are and how you mock other people's problems. I hope karma exists when I read cr)p like this.

curious79 · 18/04/2025 08:23

Consensus estimates at 1 in 200 over 16 identify as a different gender, though widely considered to be an overestimate.

i live in a part of the country where we don’t even see ethnic minorities (also low percentage). So perhaps this is about your location?

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 18/04/2025 08:23

I only know one through work, public sector organisation. Not sure I believe the stats tbh.

Lots of cross dressing men who claim to be trans. No genuine trans people.

I'm trying to understand - what is the difference between the two? (genuine question)

Lovelysummerdays · 18/04/2025 08:26

I mean they are low proportion of the population. It’s hard to know as they stuffed up
the census but it’s under 1%. I don’t think I know a single trans person either.

This really isn’t the gotcha you think it is.

Firstly, a photograph tells you very little as these days things can be filtered etc.

Secondly, these are presumably biological females - therefore there’s no real threat to women. I’m guessing many/ all of these people are quite slight in stature and not much of a physical threat that biological men are.

The main problem really is TW, i.e biological men claiming to be women - it’s a completely different thing.

They are a threat to women, because transitioning doesn’t take away their propensity for violence - TW commit the same levels of crime than other men, because they are men.

Don’t be so bloody silly. So being a feminist and supporting women’s rights is transphobic?

That’s just the kind of attitude I expect from TRAs. You don’t like it when women speak up, do you?

Yep. That one was on the bingo card.

With more than 3 times transwoman murdered than cis last year I know who I think should feel more vulnerable

This statement requires a credible source, emphasis on credible.

Edited

That post needs reporting as it is completely false.

I know two children who are trans, aged 12 and 14. One is a trans man and one a trans woman.

DS2 has two in his school year (aged 16)

I don’t personally know any adults, but know of a trans woman in our town

BellissimoGecko · 18/04/2025 08:26

Soontobe60 · 18/04/2025 08:14

Now as a result of the SC ruling, all the men in your building would be able to claim sex discrimination if they were prevented from using the bathroom designated as female. That means those bathrooms would no longer be considered single sex. For some women, that’s a massive issue due to cultural, religious, or trauma reasons. Women’s rights to single sex spaces are not yours to give away.

No they won’t, @Soontobe60 - did you mean to write that?

The judgement clarifies who and what a woman is, and the EA states that women can have single-sex spaces where reasonable, and toilets is a perfect example.

Your friend Jenny doesn’t exist as no one is cis and no one is assigned female at birth.

Presumably, they wouldn't be using the female toilet; they would be using the male toilet because they all quite obviously pass as male.

However, if they are choosing to use the female toilet, two things are at play:

  1. That, as biological women presenting as men they still feel safer using the female-only bathroom - validating the entire reason why women don't want actual men having access to 'women-only' spaces, and, to that end;
  2. As a transman doesn't pose the same physical threat to a bio woman that an 'intact' transwoman does, even if someone could 'tell', the transman would unlikely be 'addressed' for this reason. Surely this doesn't really need explaining?

Funny, all the ones I’ve seen stride around town dressed like hookers, making challenging eye contact with anyone who casts a glance their way.

I haven’t seen many scurrying around Aldi in a beige fleece.

Well my point is the ones in the beige fleece you probably wouldnt know.
Ones dressed like hookers in clown makeup I would say these are not actual trans people, they are tranvestites, its a different thing altogether.

You realise photoshop is easy. It's in person. In motion. It's the gait, the voice, the hips/lack of hips, adams apple, hand/feet size etc etc. The photoshop test is so passe, not even trans activists use it any more.

I know / have known loads. Both those who identify as a different gender without being on hormones, people on hormones who haven’t had surgery, and two who have had gender reassignment surgery.

Oddly (or not) they are all transwomen. I have never known a transman.

AirborneElephant · 18/04/2025 08:28

I know two and previously worked with a third. One dresses normally and just wants to get on with her life. The other two seemed to feel that being a woman meant bright pink, flounces, heavy makeup and OTT nails (to a point actually inappropriate for a professional workplace) and were both very activist. I have a lot of empathy today for the first.

VioletSpeedwell · 18/04/2025 08:28

many cis women I know

What do you mean by cis woman? Why not just say woman, then literally everyone would know what you're talking about.

Also the optician I saw last time was obviously a man in a dress. He was very aggressive and a bit scary. One of those things that there is just a bad energy and a "roughness" about him rather than him doing something specific. He was quite intimidating and made me feel very uncomfortable but didn't do anything I could complain about iswim.

Obviously a female optician could also have been aggressive and a bit scary but the difference is that I probably wouldn't have felt threatened in the same way as I was with him.

I've changed opticians.

I’m incredibly surprised that your dd at university hasn’t met any trans students, pretty common these days (just watch university challenge!) But seriously, you won’t always know, my dh’s nephew once was his niece and quite frankly I had no idea until I was told!
