Sending love to trans people on MN and beyond

cassandre · 17/04/2025 20:58

This isn't an AIBU. I just wanted to send love to trans people, in the UK especially, and to other members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

This hasn't been the easiest week for trans people, but there are a lot of us out there who accept you for who you are. We have your backs and we believe that eventually, tolerance and compassion will win.💖💖💖

Love from a longtime MNer and trans-inclusive feminist.

I completely understand your strength of feeling. But I have a massive issue with this not being our problem. Equality is everyone's problem. If different groups just take care of themselves, the protected characteristics that cover smaller amounts of people or that cover those most able to fight will just get kicked to the kerb, and we'll be back where we were decades ago. That is unthinkable, especially because none of us need reminding of the time when we were near the bottom of the heap.

It is not necessary to allow any men (including your friend) into women’s spaces to achieve ‘equality’ for trans people.

Equality means them not being paid less because they are trans or fired because they are trans.

I don’t care if your friend has had his willy chopped off - he is still not a woman. Becoming a woman is not prize for the most suffering from a man - it is something only a girl can do by becoming an adult.

Whilst I think the ruling in the week gave good clarification on sex and there are obviously huge complex areas that I have no solution too.
It reminded me that my dissertation tutor was trans, I never felt threatened by her/him at, I really rated her/him field so chose for that reason.
I felt 100% in a worse situation with my straight ex, whom still makes me shudder coming in to a room and I would rather have my dissertation tutor in my house than have him even on my drive. .

poetryandwine · 19/04/2025 17:19

You are of course entitled to your opinion but professionals in the field seem to use it routinely.

This is an interesting example of criticism from all sides. Several of your cohort objected earlier that the brains studied had been medicalised. As it is unethical to deny medical treatment, the way to study untreated brains is to study children before puberty.

The poor researchers can’t win with some MumsNetters. Luckily expert referees apply scientific standards

By all means study children before puberty, though I'm not sure what medical treatment it would be unethical to deny you are referring to here But don't refer to children as trans, because that is imposing inappropriate adult values onto developing children. Children are not trans, any more than they are right wing, or any other adult concepts which are not applicable to children.

Confused, unwell, ND and abused children were all overrepresented amongst the patients at the Tavistock, and their being adultified is part of how they were failed by those services.

And your tutor and your ex are each one person, they're not representatives. This is not about maligning individuals, this is about women as a sex class having spaces and services free of men as a sex class. And the sex class of men includes straight men, gay men, transwomen, men who identify as animals, men who like cooking, men who drive boats, men who watch Strictly, men who hate strictly. They're all men.

Was your professor male or female?

I’m glad you didn’t feel threatened by your professor - no student should feel threatened by their professor.

Sadly, the female students of another male (female identifying) professor would rightly feel threatened by his words - in a radio interview he confirmed he would have no issue if there was a spike in murders of women if self id laws went through. I’d say that’s a pretty horrific attitude for a professor.

I desperately hope that you are not trying to make the point that because some men like your ex without a ‘gender identity’ are violent that we should ignore the risks posed by men WITH a ‘gender identity’? Because that’s a bit how it’s coming across…

Nameychangington · 19/04/2025 09:45

Women having the right to a word to describe ourselves, and the right to single sex spaces where those matters, is not 'punching down'. Woman are actual humans, not support animals for men.

Have a meme

Totally disagree - trans women are absolutely not in any way the enemies of womankind.

JandamiHash · 19/04/2025 17:58

poetryandwine · 19/04/2025 17:13

In the broad field of sexuality and the brain, yes. It is huge. Worth noting that ‘lady brain’ is your term, nobody else’s.

But there is no suggestion that there is a female/trans brain that both men and women have.

Infiltrating women's spaces and services without their consent is a shitty thing to do.

Surely you know that whatever ‘side’ you perceive people to be on, different people have different views?

JandamiHash · 19/04/2025 17:59

Helleofabore · 19/04/2025 17:21

And there you are again :

"Being truly transgender is a measurable biological phenomenon

This was the statement you made. Not the ones you are trying to say I was referring to.

Yes it’s strange how a phenomenon is so very unproven, almost like it’s made up

Why don’t we concentrate on how women are (mis)treated abused raped controlled silenced around the world (BECAUSE they are WOMEN) and focus on that rather than putting all your energy into fighting the good fight for bob wanting to use the ladies loo because he feels like sue today? I don’t get the passion some women have for this cause. Especially the “feminists”

You think this is just about toilets?
Have you even bothered to read the thread?

Male transitioning in go female.
And I did say that the I don’t have all the answers to the current situation as it’s really complex.
And no I’m not at all trying to say all trans people are nice people or that we just give them a free ticket for being trans.

You may have not been threatened by your tutor but how would you feel about Karen White in your cell? Because that’s the reality of not using women in biological terms

What if your ex decided he was woman and came into a changing room you were in?

So do you want to have a think about the issues with men demanding access to women's sports, rape counselling, domestic violence shelters, hospital wards, prisons, lesbian dating events, changing rooms, board positions - I could go on.

Did I not say I thought it was complex?
And also, I spent 4yrs volunteering for domestic violence services. That’s as well as my full time job plus being part of the Covid-19 goverment response to domestic violence. What have you done?

Helleofabore · 19/04/2025 17:27

Another misrepresentation if you are referring to me. Although, I do question the ethics of medical treatment to make a body fit better to an individual’s philosophical belief.

I pointed out that the research did not include a cohort of adolescents who were age matched and disagnosed with gender dysphoria but were not taking puberty blockers.

Not an unfair criticism.

The Low Countries have been largely following the Dutch protocol and administering puberty blockers. Having taken that position it would be unethical to withhold treatment. So providing a control group is not practical.

No research is perfect. This research is good according to experts. Your point doesn’t detract from that

I am beginning to understand now just how society got into the mess we find ourselves with such low standards of expectation of academia and those who publish in it.

Transwomen are men. And men, as a sex class, are a danger to women. Why do you think we even have single sex spaces?

I’m saying we should be focussing on getting women their rights around the world (in some places, even to be able to go out alone or have an education or not be mutilated) before thinking about getting women’s rights for men. What is it you have an issue with?
