Sending love to trans people on MN and beyond

cassandre · 17/04/2025 20:58

This isn't an AIBU. I just wanted to send love to trans people, in the UK especially, and to other members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

This hasn't been the easiest week for trans people, but there are a lot of us out there who accept you for who you are. We have your backs and we believe that eventually, tolerance and compassion will win.💖💖💖

Love from a longtime MNer and trans-inclusive feminist.

Hello! Fellow trans ally feminist here! I love and support the trans community. I have friends who are trans and are lovely people who deserve respect and kindness, as do we all

We can give them respect and kindness while also acknowledging that they cannot change biological sex.

No one ever claimed they can, sex and gender are different. You can change gender but not sex

Except it's literally about the trans community

No, it’s literally about women. Men who think they’re women have been told they are categorically not women.
Do keep up.

Whammyyammy · 18/04/2025 17:28

Starting to feel we as a race are healing.
Men with MH issues can no longer use women's toilets because they are wearing a dress.
Life has become that little bit safer.

And the Equality Act protects sex based rights. HTH.

For me, I think it’s now time for men in society to start doing the work in ensuring the transgender community feel comfortable, safe and accepted in public settings. They need to start with accepting and embracing that there are many different ways to be male, and that whatever type of male, adult or child, you are, you don’t need to grow to despise your body or feel as though your body does not fit your brain. If there are true myriad and all accepted facets of manhood and womanhood, then there should be no fear for that brain to be in either biological categorisation.

It’s abundantly clear to me, especially having a son, that male socialisation is heavily restricted and exclusive, not to mention aggressive and ridiculing of any male who is even slightly outside the bounds of those restrictions.

Men need to do better.

Yes!

I have been saying for a long time now that if male single sex spaces are unsafe for males who have transgender identities, then they need to have programmes that will make them safe.

The safety argument has been so misused in the UK on so many MN threads. But those who unthinkingly repeat it never answer a simple question:

If male single sex spaces are so unsafe for any vulnerable group of male people (and those with a transgender identity are vulnerable we are told), should we also then be allowing all unsafe vulnerable male people into the female single sex spaces?

cassandre · 18/04/2025 17:28

JHound · 18/04/2025 14:07

Ditto this but I cannot imagine there are trans people who would be comfortable here.

😢Alas, I'm sure you're right.

Again, this whole thread is an illustration of why MN (generally speaking) is not a welcoming place for trans people.

To me, the real feminism on MN happens in places like the Relationships threads, where women are giving one another real-life support. In the FWR threads, not so much. Because there only one form of feminism seems to be accepted. And if you disagree with the majority view, you're labelled anti-feminist.

It's a shame.

@poetryandwine I appreciate your scientific citations.

When I say that I want tolerance, I mean it. I see women on MN pouring so much energy into attacking other women who disagree with them. And even though trans-inclusivity is an absolutely central tenet of feminism for me, I don't see it as helpful to belittle other feminists, regardless of how much I disagree with their views.

Instead of directing hate speech at each other, we could all be acting as allies to fight the toxic Andrew Tate/Trump-style patriarchy that is currently threatening our world.

There are many examples now of male people who have repeated the line 'I am a female', they might add 'I am a biological female' just like Dr Upton did in court not very long ago.

@cassandre did you actually read what we have said about those citations? Or are you only interested in someone's view that agrees with yours?

Those links show no conclusive evidence

Ok? Not sure what point you think you are responding to of mine. I said I support trans people, I never said anything about the equality act. HTH

It's the provisions of the Equality act that were being clarified in yesterdays judgements. Do you even know what that judgement was about?

Bogginsthe3rd · 18/04/2025 15:08

Find the summary myself? The summary is formed in your brain after reading the article dear. If you don't want to discuss it that's fine, but a but it undermines a lot of what you are saying.

You can’t undermine what doesn’t exist - ie an explanation of “women” other than “adult human female”. Still waiting on your definition.

JandamiHash · 18/04/2025 17:34

poetryandwine · 18/04/2025 15:10

@JandamiHash and I either have different views of what I claimed (and I reviewed my posts before writing) or different views of the articles.

I admit to having read them quickly, but I am trained in interpreting scientific data and have a bit of background knowledge. I am super impressed by any amateurs who could read both articles more quickly than me and confidently tell me I am wrong. :)

What makes you think I’m an amateur?
TBH I highly doubt you’re an academic scientist - you cannot interpret research and you also can’t copy and paste into a website. Academics I know are all very literate in these things.

I'm not sure you're totally up on the modern trans community then. Because absolutely loads of them claim they've changed sex.

I do thanks! Again, not sure what you’re attacking me on, the original post I am commenting on didn’t specifically mention the judgement either. Just alluded to it. So I joined in my own support for trans people. Love to all! (Including trans people)

JandamiHash · 18/04/2025 17:37

poetryandwine · 18/04/2025 15:23

The venom dripping from a number of posts on this thread is an example of why legal protections are not enough.

Last night on C4 News a woman from the victorious side made a point of quite unnecessarily referring to the transwoman Scottish barrister speaking for the losing side as a man. Whatever your views of the barrister’s gender, it was a gratuitous slap in the face on national TV. The victorious woman looked smug; Cathy Newman looked shocked. Because there was no need to hurt someone’s feelings in that setting.

It is certainly of a piece with a fair portion of the comments here.

No she was correct, all transwomen are men. What aren’t you understanding?

”Dripping with venom” is another misogynistic “why won’t these fucking women just STFU” set of words to tick off our misogyny bingo list.

Youre outraged because a man’s feelings have been hurt - what about the feelings of women for over a decade who’ve been gaslighted into accepting men into their safe spaces? How do you feel about their upset?

Transwomen need to start accepting people will call them men because they are. I expect a legal professional to have a better backbone

Nameychangington · 18/04/2025 17:36

Pretty sure I am clued up more than most transphobes. I do listen to trans people. Sure there are extremes in every community, but most people I listen to, both in real life and online, do say that they are aware it’s a gender change, not a sex change

So what was your sudden desire to express your great love of trans people prompted by?

Are you also going to express your support of women's sex-based rights being clarified?

It was prompted by a thread on mumsnet declaring support for trans people. I’m really not your enemy here

You sound and act pretty amateurishly. Not that @poetryandwine did any incorrect copying and pasting, but if that's your yardstick for being an academic it's pretty embarrassing for you. What you would be good at sorting out is people good at Microsoft word (v2007 - office365). Are you a perhaps a head hunter for legacy versions of MS office?

It also shows a disregard to the fact we have already had the second one posted repeatedly on MN before and that the first only has an abstract publicly available.

It really wasn’t a gotcha in any way.

I’m not. However I do acknowledge your point about it being sex based in the equalities act and would welcome an addition for gender based rights as well. Probably too much to hope for right now in todays political climate, but maybe one day

Please define trablnsphobe, and point out the transphobia on the thread so we can all report it.

Every trans space I've seen online is full of transwomen claiming to be biological women, claiming they've changed sex, claiming that they've changed sex on a cellular level, claiming that cross sex hormones change their biology from male to female, India W claiming to have a cervix, etc etc. That's not fringe at all. Some are liars, some are unwell, some are confused young people who've been lied to but loads do say it and seem to believe it.
