To wish people would STOP QUOTING THE OP!!!

There is absolutely no point in quoting the OP. We've all read the OP already. All you're doing is wasting everyone's time by making us scroll past it to read the rest of the thread. I have no idea why so many people do it but it is completely unnecessary so please could anyone who does this stop. This has been a public service announcement. Thank you.

OP posts:
HonoriaBulstrode · 16/04/2025 23:16

No, makes sense because then people know what you are responding to

If I see someone responding to the first post when there are several pages of replies, I know that person hasn't RTT and I needn't bother to read their post, because they're probably not saying anything that hasn't already been said several times over.

And people who are still quoting the OP of this thread and making some fatuous remark, four pages in - it wasn't funny when the first person did it.

It was actually hilarious.

Why?

Snowdrop98 · 17/04/2025 00:24

I genuinely don’t understand why people get so worked up about this. I find the complaints about quoting the OP more annoying than the actual quotes, if anything.

No the person doing is a twat.
I once accidentally quoted the OP. I would have banned myself for a month being a dick if it was an option.

Agree!

what’s the point in complaining about it

RaindropBloom · 17/04/2025 00:40

I can sort of see the point a few pages in to help refresh our memories. But when it's the first poster on a thread and then they just put a tiny little three word response 🤬 why? Just in the name WHY?

Mistyglade · 17/04/2025 01:04

People who quote the OP pronounce aitch haitch. Guaranteed.

coxesorangepippin · 17/04/2025 01:33

YANBU

Super frustrating, especially halfway through the damn thread

RightOnTheEdge · 17/04/2025 01:50

Totally annoying and unnecessary.
I also read a thread the other day where the first post quoted the whole OP, ffs.

Pandimoanymum · 17/04/2025 01:51

I wish they’d bring back the facility to be able to quote just one part of the OPs post instead of the whole thing. It was useful for when you wanted to reply to the OP about just one small part of what they said. I’ve been here 20 years off and on, but sometimes I don’t come on for months, so I don’t know when they took that option away.

SpookyMcTaggart · 17/04/2025 03:31

It's so stupid. If I someone does it, I deliberately ignore what they've got to say.

JorgyPorgy · 17/04/2025 03:52

Is it ok to quote a PP? Otherwise people won’t know what you’re actually responding to if you just use the quotation @.

GripGetter · 17/04/2025 04:05

YANBU.
It's even more annoying than "Just that really".

doodahdayy · 17/04/2025 04:41

It’s annoying. Especially if it’s to a post that has already been resolved/updated and the poster hasn’t bothered to read or doesnt know how to

It's not like reading MN is your job and you're frustrated with the extra work, though, is it?

peppermintcrumble · 17/04/2025 05:23

babasaclover · 16/04/2025 19:16

It’s so that the op reads your message. It’s so they get a message about it not to remind people of original post

But it’s their post! They’ll be watching it and seeing all replies!

Rabbitoney · 17/04/2025 05:26

Oh fuck yes. Especially annoying when some twat comes steaming in at page eleventy million of a thread, quotes the entire OP and leaves a one line comment saying something that has already been said numerous times, because we must have the benefit of their wisdom despite them being apparently too lazy/stupid to actually read the thread.

AprilMadness · 17/04/2025 05:50

I think a PPs idea to just remove the faculty to quote an opening quote is the perfect solution.

It drives me mad!

See also bi-weekly threads on how annoying it is. And the many "humorous" posters who then quote the opening post to ask why. It was funny 5 years ago but it isn't funny now and especially many times in the same thread. (Can you tell I've not had my morning coffee yet!)

And while we're on it, if a post has over 500 comments PLEASE read all the OPs update comments, things will have definitely have moved on!

Whew feel better now! Off to put the kettle on!

Bang on. Couldn’t put it better myself so easier to just quote.

Absolutely fine to quote a PP. In fact it makes more sense as if you only put @JorgyPorgy in your reply other posters have no idea what you're talking about.

New posters seem to do that a lot. @ everyone who replies to them. Which is very polite but reading it makes no sense to anyone else.
