There is absolutely no point in quoting the OP. We've all read the OP already. All you're doing is wasting everyone's time by making us scroll past it to read the rest of the thread. I have no idea why so many people do it but it is completely unnecessary so please could anyone who does this stop. This has been a public service announcement. Thank you.

Not very kind or patient. Many posters are new and don't have any idea that posting the OP [may seriously offend] a thread poster, like it's some kind of exclusive, bitchy, club. You give off an awful vibe.

Yes it's true I'm an absolutely horrible person. I eat kittens for lunch. And??? It's still annoying.

Well, that's your choice, isn't it?.

I don't because I like the concept of having a conversation with someone, though sometimes it might not be a bad idea!!!

That’s why I turned it off especially if I’ve said something then clarified and still people kept jumping on the first comment was like 🥱

If I’m into the conversation I’ll check if not people can @ me till the cows come home.

Why do you start threads and never return to read the responses? Have you too much time on your hands?

I don’t start threads. I meant as a commenter.

Agree.

What sort of response did you honestly think you’d get @Thedownsideisup? As if people will pass up the chance to quote your OP.

TimeForABreak4 · 16/04/2025 19:46

Absolutely agree, it's not needed and is a pain in the arse when it's a long op to have to keep scrolling past it being quoted repeatedly.

MigGril · 16/04/2025 19:46

@babasaclover there is no needed to quote the OP so they see it though all you need to do is put @Thedownsideisup in your post and they will still get a message.

I agree, there is no need for it and a pain especially when the OP's post is long.

Do people actually do that?

MammaRoly · 16/04/2025 19:49

A little off tangent but another niggle is people posting "placemarking" on a thread instead of using the bookmark! Happens often on a Christmas thread I follow.

I had a glitch a couple of days ago and the "trending" list appeared after only a couple of replies on each thread. I really liked it because I often click on a thread and then cba to carry on reading or read the thread and realise I have already read it. But only a glitch not a handy update and it isn't doing it now 😪

I agree, it's really annoying.

Kkb8 · 16/04/2025 20:05

I’m an easily irritated person but it doesn’t bother me really. If a post is v long and has loads of numbered questions, I will quote for that reason to refer back to the questions.

DissDissOrDiss · 16/04/2025 20:07

It’s makes me think the poster is a bit dim. I scroll straight past their comments.

Agree with a ban.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/04/2025 20:10

If MN disable the ability to quote the opening post it would be the best thing they’ve ever done.

it’s particularly annoying when the there’s hundreds of posts including several more from the OP which have moved the conversation on.

UndermyShoeJoe · 16/04/2025 20:18

Also I think we should have to read all of the ops posts before being allowed to post.

Also before quoting a PP we must of read all their posts 😅

Who made you a Prefect?

Jabberwok · 16/04/2025 20:21

Hell yes

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/04/2025 20:22
  • Quoting the OP, especially when you are the first person to reply
  • Not checking how many posts there are on the thread - if there are more than 100, there is no point in replying to the OP, it will already have ben said, probably dozens of times
  • Not checking the date of the OP - Will my baby ever sleep through the night?' OP 01/01/2001. Have you tried swaddling him?^ Reply fom A. N. Other 16/04/2025. Meanwhile the OP, on her 100th name change, is asking about mother of the groom outfits over on S&B.
  • Not checking for updates. The very worst of these are when the OP asks for advice about something quite trivial but as the thread develops it turns out to be really serious. Meanwhile idiots are telling her that she shouldn't be wasting NHS time by trying to see her GP.

Bannable, every single one of them.

WendyFromTransvisionWamp · 16/04/2025 20:30

Oh god, I agree so much. For some reason it seems suddenly much worse now, don’t think it was so prevalent in the past?

After you've done your refering back and finished your response you can click "clear quote".

Who made you a Prefect?

Many people hate it, not just the OP.

Daffodilsarefading · 16/04/2025 20:36

100% agree op.
It’s infuriating.

Gustavo77 · 16/04/2025 20:40

I wish ops would stop giving the people they post about names. "Let's call them....." Drives me nuts

TY78910 · 16/04/2025 20:49

agreed ESPECIALLY when it’s war and peace to start with

however the only time I don’t get irritated is when posters do it accidentally (I still don’t know how you can accidentally do it) but they usually open with ‘I don’t know how I did that and I can’t remove the quote’
