Supreme Court rules the term sex refers to 'biological women'

everythingthelighttouches · 16/04/2025 10:10

Finally.

There is no “triumph” for me.

i am delighted though.
I feel relief that this reasonable request for clarity has been heard.

The judge also said “the law still gives trans people protection against discrimination.”

As it should do. No one ever argued otherwise.

Who stopped you referring to yourself as a woman?

Have you missed the instances of shoving “ciswoman” “chest feeder” “pregnant person” “uterus haver” down people throats? Not some mad factions either - we are talking public and private bodies and the NHS.

slashlover · 16/04/2025 19:29

viques · 16/04/2025 19:26

Except the people who called us menstruators, or ciswomen, or rights hoarding dinosaurs.

We're talking about you calling YOURSELF a woman.

GoodCharl · 16/04/2025 19:29

Finally, clarity in the eyes of the law! A woman is now defined so we can stop dancing around the subject. Common sense prevails!

BewilderedPiskie · 16/04/2025 19:29

Finally a sensible ruling that recognises the rights of women are compromised if biology is erased in the application of law. Trans women and men absolutely deserve protection in law as well and this is still upheld by the equality act and rightly so. Surely this must help to clarify so we can move forward in a more positive way from this point. I am very grateful to the supreme court for their level headed and factual approach to this contentious issue. Wonderful news!!

Nobody ever stopped you calling yourself a woman.

This is a lie.

As usual.

andtheworldrollson · 16/04/2025 19:30

Well I was only happy calling myself woman when I thought it meant my sex. If people wanted to make it mean I accepted and identified with a feminine gender then I wasn’t happy which was tricky in some situations

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 16/04/2025 19:31

TheWisePlumDuck · 16/04/2025 18:39

I'm afraid we can look forward to confrontations and temper tantrums.

Though apparently we will all just shut up if they say it hormonal issues and show us their false birth certificates. So actually, they can just keep accessing women's spaces.

JFC that’s frightening, they cannot believe this nonsense surely?

JandamiHash · 16/04/2025 19:31

JustANobody · 16/04/2025 19:30

This is a lie.

As usual.

Imagine of all the discussions to be had as a result of this ruling, someone honing in on that one post. TTAs think they can win with semantics but they underestimate the intelligence of the women

Have you missed the instances of shoving “ciswoman” “chest feeder” “pregnant person” “uterus haver” down people throats? Not some mad factions either - we are talking public and private bodies and the NHS.

I'll ask again, who stopped you referring you YOURSELF as a woman?

We're talking about you calling YOURSELF a woman.

Ok as we’re being facetious.. imagine you’re lesbian. And society decided that Lesbian actually meant women who have sex with donkeys. Would you still feel comfortable calling yourself a lesbian!? Same difference.. women became a word that included men.. that removes its meaning for many women and absolutely changes how you feel comfortable naming yourself. Which is why so many of us began.l referring to ourselves as female instead.

Smallsalt · 16/04/2025 19:36

Trans woman lawyer on channel 4 news, claiming that hormone treatment makes these men female in every cell of their body😳.
Utterly crazy.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 16/04/2025 19:39

AngeDough · 16/04/2025 18:46

Why is everyone so bothered. Just live and let live

What else shouldn’t we be bothered about? The 3 women a week who are murdered in the UK by men? I suppose if you don’t know any of those women why should you care, right?
How about rape? If you’ve never been raped or know any women that have, you don’t need to worry about it do you? And talking about rape, we probably shouldn’t care about the vulnerable women in prison who have been raped by the trans identifying men that have been put in prison with them, in the name of ‘be kind’, should we?
As long as you don’t care, we should all follow suit eh? JFC 🤦‍♀️

(18) Meaning and workability of other provisions

218:

'Read fairly and in context, the provisions relating to single-sex services can only be interpreted by reference to biological sex.'

https://supremecourt.uk/cases/judgments/uksc-2024-0042

@Lostcat
It says clearly here that trans women ARE NOT allowed to use women spaces.

ArabellaScott · 16/04/2025 19:41

viques · 16/04/2025 19:08

Oh dear, when you are up against people who believes that taking hormones over a number of years actually changes the genetic chromosomes in your cells then there is still a steep hill to climb.

Walking boots on!

Any excuse to get this out again.

This was the initial comment I made

Nobody ever stopped you calling yourself a woman.

It's not being facetious to point out people are replying to a comment they made up in their heads. But yeah, you bring beastiality into it for...some reason.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 16/04/2025 19:42

Lostcat · 16/04/2025 17:07

It allows for the possibility that in some cases particular rights , entitlements and services etc may be reserved for women assigned female at birth, based on a specific protected characteristic of “sex” (as understood under the EA 2010), as long as that would not also unreasonably discriminate against/ violate protections for trans women on the grounds of gender reassignment, who are also protected in the act, of course.

It does not mean that trans women are not women , or not welcome in female spaces.

This is exactly the kind of wrong analysis I would expect from someone who thinks something is assigned at birth.

Still to find one person who can say who stopped her referring to herself as a woman.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 16/04/2025 19:45

juldan · 16/04/2025 18:53

@Lostcat

No, it does not force trans people to use third spaces. They can choose to use spaces which are correct for their biological sex.
It makes it clear however, that women’s spaces such as changing rooms, toilets are for biological women . It also makes it clear that lesbian women do not have to accept biological men into their spaces.__

‘Othered, siloed and outed’, @Lostcat is continuing to fill up the bingo card with all the usual nonsense. 🤦‍♀️

AInightingale · 16/04/2025 19:45

Maugham on Bluesky (which is observing an official day of mourning, as you'd imagine) : 'I've put on my hob nailed boots and given the Supreme Court decision the kicking it deserves.' He may be speaking figuratively but there is something inherently vicious about these men, and he has form for random violence, of course.

No, but there is absolutely no point in calling yourself a meaningless word.

JandamiHash · 16/04/2025 19:47

slashlover · 16/04/2025 19:34

I'll ask again, who stopped you referring you YOURSELF as a woman?

You think this isn’t an attempt to stop ALL women from being referred to as- including by themselves - as “women”?

slashlover · 16/04/2025 19:44

Nobody ever stopped you calling yourself a woman.

Did you miss the bits about ‘chest feeders’ ‘people with a cervix/uterus’, ‘people who menstruate’, ‘non male people’?
