To find this bizarre? Friend and soap

A friend came around earlier as I had a half day. Before she left, she said she was just popping to the loo. I then heard her call a minute later, “Splodge? There’s no soap”.

I have a dispenser, so I assumed it had run out and called back that there was some on the side of the bath. There was a pause and she called back, “No, not here”. I knew it was there so replied, “Just against the wall, behind the shower screen”. Again, a pause before a bewildered “No…”

I was completely confused now, as I knew very well it was there. I went through to the hall and she was standing in the doorway looking baffled. I went in, looked behind the screen and sure enough, there it was. I handed it to her and said, “Here, see?”

She burst out laughing and said, “Ohhhhh!! It’s shower gel!!” I was a bit confused and replied, “Well yes; soap, shower gel… whatever”. She was smiling at me a bit like I was a child who’d made a comical mistake. She said, “You said soap. This is shower gel. Show-er gel.” With the last bit really slowly, like she wasn’t sure English was my first language.

I was really taken aback. Who is this bizarrely literal? Surely it’s all pretty much the same thing? I thought maybe she was looking for a bar of soap and this was what had confused her somehow, but surely when you couldn’t see it you’d think “it must be the stuff in the bottle”? And even if you didn’t, wouldn’t you just have used the shower gel anyway?

I’ve never noticed her take things so literally before. Is it me or is this just really odd?!

I can’t believe you think the difference between a wine glass and a mug is the same as the (lack of) difference between liquid soap and shower gel.

It is though!!

Easily up there with some of the most deranged bizarre threads I've ever read.
And I'm enjoying it immensely!

OP is, of course, being wildly unreasonable and knows it.

Not really, it would be more like a china tea cup and a builders mug. Both are for hot drinks, but not quite the same, but will function just as well in place of the other.

You sound a bit obsessed with germs. You should speak to someone.

And hand sanitiser isn't shower gel; it's an alcohol based gel.

OneTidyLilacRaven · 22/04/2025 19:49

I think its all the same stuff. Just given different names so we buy more.

Tricho · 22/04/2025 19:51

Do you also use kitchen roll as toilet paper?

Just buy some soap!

MsAmerica · 16/04/2025 01:33

Meh. I might do the same, since I've never encountered shower gel.
What's bizarre to me is that you considered this meaningful enough to quiz the forum about it.

and that all these people bothered to even respond, much less argue the case for and against !

SplodgePocket · 22/04/2025 21:59

Do you also use kitchen roll as toilet paper?

No. Because toilet roll is the opposite of kitchen roll. Toilet roll is designed to dissolve in water; kitchen roll is designed to soak up liquid. If you put kitchen roll down the toilet, you can damage your pipes.

Shower gel and soap are essentially the same thing in different packaging.

Regardless of what it's called, you don't need to "buy more". You still use the same amount whether it's in one bottle, or two different ones. If you choose to buy two you only have to rebuy at half the speed of buying one. And you have the added convenience of being able to have one bottle in each of the places you use it.

If you prefer to put shower gel by your sink to wash your hands, it's fine. Or hand wash in the shower - no problem. But whatever you choose, there is no reason to "buy more".

Tryingtokeepgoing · 23/04/2025 15:54

Is there any reason you didn't just sat, "oh, sorry. It must have run out. Use the shower gel on the side of the bath" ? Soap and shower gel are not interchangeable in a bath context, which is where you directed her, as one is liquid and in a plastic (usually) bottle, and the other a bar. You told her to look for a bar of soap, where there was none.

But either way, shower gel and liquid soap are worse at cleaning and for the environment than an actual bar of soap, so you are being doubly unreasonable ;)

Because then she wouldn't have been able to stretch this thread out to 24 pages.

I’m not sure it was me who stretched the thread to 24 pages. Surely the people commenting did that! And a lot of them making the same mistake over and over again!

I voted YABU (and still think that in relation to the actual soap situation)

However the lack of reading comprehension on MN drives me up the wall, and OP's increasingly irate responses, particularly the poem, "bottle up the fanny", and interpretative dance, to people who 24 pages later are still asking why she didn't refill a soap container she didn't know was empty have meant I am now fully Team!OP

Reeconblue · 20/08/2025 00:45

Very trivial! Honestly you need a hobby! Soap making perhaps? 😴

Ilovegermany · 20/08/2025 01:00

@SplodgePocket I‘m with you. Even Jo Malone sell their shower gel as Hand and Body Wash.

Shower gel isn't soap. And hand wash isn't soap either. Neither wash you as well as soap does.

Sennelier1 · 24/08/2025 12:43

In hotels it's often one dispenser, "hand&body soap" (or -gel or whatever) and they fill it from the same big jar 🤷🏼‍♀️
