To find this bizarre? Friend and soap

SplodgePocket · 15/04/2025 18:56

A friend came around earlier as I had a half day. Before she left, she said she was just popping to the loo. I then heard her call a minute later, “Splodge? There’s no soap”.

I have a dispenser, so I assumed it had run out and called back that there was some on the side of the bath. There was a pause and she called back, “No, not here”. I knew it was there so replied, “Just against the wall, behind the shower screen”. Again, a pause before a bewildered “No…”

I was completely confused now, as I knew very well it was there. I went through to the hall and she was standing in the doorway looking baffled. I went in, looked behind the screen and sure enough, there it was. I handed it to her and said, “Here, see?”

She burst out laughing and said, “Ohhhhh!! It’s shower gel!!” I was a bit confused and replied, “Well yes; soap, shower gel… whatever”. She was smiling at me a bit like I was a child who’d made a comical mistake. She said, “You said soap. This is shower gel. Show-er gel.” With the last bit really slowly, like she wasn’t sure English was my first language.

I was really taken aback. Who is this bizarrely literal? Surely it’s all pretty much the same thing? I thought maybe she was looking for a bar of soap and this was what had confused her somehow, but surely when you couldn’t see it you’d think “it must be the stuff in the bottle”? And even if you didn’t, wouldn’t you just have used the shower gel anyway?

I’ve never noticed her take things so literally before. Is it me or is this just really odd?!

Quite enjoying the amount of people that don't seem to be able to read..

FWIW, if someone's hand soap dispenser was empty I would 1. Just use shower gel anyway and let them find the dispenser empty 😂 or 2. Shout out like friend did and if I couldn't find it (or use my common sense) I'd tell OP when I returned that "I couldn't find the soap so I just used the shower gel" OP would reply that's what she meant and we'd have a laugh and move on.

Really not a big deal but honestly OP, you really should have some hand soap by the sink, it's very weird that you don't and you make guests root around your "bum cleaners" etc to find something to wash hands with.... 😉

Yes, you're right. A one-off failure to check levels of soap in a dispenser definitely means they are deficient in all areas of cleanliness. Anything other than a 100% track record in never ever running out of one kind of toiletries means they are constantly failing to provide themselves with all other toiletries and should be shunned by society. Extrapolating from a one-time slip to assuming they are deficient in all aspects of personal cleanliness is definitely completely reasonable and not at all hyperbolic.

You significantly misunderstand me.

I'm not at all saying that they WILL be deficient in all other personal hygiene matters; I'm saying that they WILL presumably regularly buy essential toiletries and personal sanitary needs of various kinds - which is why I find your suggestions that they may just forget time and time again to ever get soap for bathroom hand washing bizarre.

The toiletries are all in the same couple of aisles (or in the same small-ish shop, such as Boots or wherever), so you'd have to either completely swerve those aisles on every visit (highly unlikely) or pick up everything else but somehow be too disorganised to reach out your hand and grab hand wash or soap all the times you walk right past it!

But it WASN’T SOAP!! What’s hard to understand? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤯

Why she didn’t just fucking use it!

Because she was busy looking for the soap you told her was there but wasn’t there!

I didn't suggest time and time again. You're the one extrapolating from a one-off oversight that soap or other toiletries would be forgotten repeatedly and that it's in any way significant.

It's bizarre that you think running out of soap once means anything other than they ran out of soap once. It really isn't as significant as you're insisting it is.

Why would you buy soap every time you're in Tesco? You'd end up with loads of it. Having a spare bottle is completely normal. Not being organised enough 100% of the time to always have a spare is just as normal.

daleylama · 16/04/2025 22:31

SplodgePocket · 16/04/2025 00:33

What do you think I do - shove the whole bottle there?!

I mean, don’t get me wrong; it’s not as tight as it was 20 years ago. But I can still manage to squeeze the shower gel into my hands rather than going full on “bottle up the fanny”.

I'm impressed you've managed to keep a sense of humour here . Also astonished by the number who have swallowed the marketing whole. Mind you I had a colleague bitch about having to use a bar of soap for handwashing cos it would spread germs! How can so many people not have a basic grasp of the science behind soap/ gel/whevs?

In solidarity I have decided to fill my soap dispenser with cheap but nice smelling shower gel, because it's basically cheaper the same.

Doesn't everyone have a little hand soap pump or bar of soap on the sink for hand washing?
Yep, pretty much everyone. Including OP.

But it's not much use if it's empty, is it?

As OP keeps saying that shower gel and handwash are the same thing, why wouldn't she have filled up the empty dispenser from the shower gel bottle once she used the last of it?

Or alternatively, if she doesn't object to anybody (including herself) picking up, touching and opening a bottle with pooey hands - rather than a much more hygienic soap dispenser that can be easily pressed with one (non-wiping) hand or even a wrist/elbow - why doesn't she just keep the shampoo bottle on the edge of the sink and move it back in when she showers?

Most people use the toilet considerably more times in a day than they do the shower; and don't usually have pooey hands when taking a shower.

Pinkdhalia · 16/04/2025 22:38

No soap is soap , bar or liquid. Shower gel is shower gel! I would t have used your shower gel either.

Well this is getting even sillier.

I think it's a fair assumption she didn't realise the dispenser was empty on this particular day.

I didn't say you should buy soap every time you're in Tesco - just that you would presumably walk right past the soap frequently and thus could easily be reminded to buy some on the occasions when you need it - when you know you only have one bottle/bar left, or you just recently started the last one.

Just like you do with bread, milk, and everything else! Except fresh food can't be bought and left in a corner of your cupboard for weeks until you next need it - as handwash and soap can!

But all of those things are quite common to run out of once in a while. Maybe you are so organised that every single time you see a specific item you remember you've just used up the last bit of it you had so you replace it.

Generally people aren't that perfect.

Maybe it's just me, but if it's a large wall dispenser, I personally wouldn't wait until it gets really low before refilling it; or, if a 'standard' dispenser bottle (Carex or whatever), I would have a spare one there waiting once the current one clearly wasn't long for this world.

Either way, I would make it a priority to ensure that there was always the facility to wash your hands after using the toilet.

But I agree: this is getting boring now.

I assume she, and you, know that soap does indeed come in liquid form though? Unless she thought I’d mashed a bar up to put in the dispenser?

Are you jealous of your friend in some way?

Something about your interaction with her has really riled you up and offended you, was it because she made you feel silly ….. most people wouldn’t have gone on MN and even written a post about this let alone spend the last 24hrs or so on here desperately trying to prove to people that they don’t know that they were right….. you come across as desperately insecure

Not really, I generally have a shopping list - and add to it when supplies of an essential item are getting low.

I use the toilet in my home often enough to be able to notice when the soap is getting low, which makes me think to check the cupboard for a spare - then, if there isn't a spare one, a couple more go on the shopping list for the next shop.

I really can't believe I'm the only person in the country who does that!

Nobody suggested you were the only one to do that. Not even remotely.

But it is also entirely normal to not be that organised and for that not to mean anything of any significance
