To report this as benefit fraud

A relative is claiming benefits, can’t work due to health but is one of those who is always complaining about something wrong with her but is always able to do the things she wants to do. Can holiday abroad, always down the gym, etc. When she was working she was always making complaints against employers- one of life’s victims.

She sold a property a couple of years ago and has squirrelled about £40k away through investments. I think has got her mother to do this for her.

I’m so fed up of seeing people like her take the piss. I 100% support a welfare system and it really pisses me off to see it abused like this. And meanwhile we are working our arses off and not able to afford the foreign travel and gym memberships.

I’m so tempted to report her secret savings to DWP.

So are you going to tell the people concerned that they're fraudsters and you're going to report them?

Yes.

At the end of the day, as tax payers, this is all our money that is being stolen. It means that there is less in the 'pot' for other things such as the NHS as, as we have to with our personal finances, the Govt have to balance the books. If a relative was regularly dipping into your bank account you'd do something.

Ready to be shot down in flames & accused of being a fascist now. 😩

Amazes me on this type of thread that people seem to ‘know ‘ so much about their neighbour’s/friend’s/ relative’s financial situation.

As I said yesterday on a thread I don't know what my children earn,/financial situations never mind friends or relatives

Ethelflaedofmercia · 15/04/2025 17:26

My cousin is exactly the same. Been on benefits and goes abroad/gym etc… the difference is that I don’t care.

Just say his benefits were taken away, will I pay less tax? No. Will I be able to afford those things? No.

just concentrate on your life, it’ll make you happier

Where does it end?

Good. So you don't need the might of Mumsnet to validate you.

Absolutely.
it’s not a crime without consequence. It’s money coming from somewhere.

No, some of the posters here would let them dip in the bank account because it would be vindictive to make trouble for them.

I understand it but can you prove it? Say for example a grandparent died the mother inherited and says to the daughter I'm investing this money for you for when I'm gone that isn't illegal because the money was never in the daughters name nor was it in the will to go to the daughter so therfore no fraud and unless the mother goes into a home that money will come to.them

I know someone where this did happen. Her mum inherited and gifted some to all her kids. One was on UC and it would have been affected. So mum has kept the money for them and gives it as and when needed.
They went to CAB and they were told it was fine as the money was gifted and you can refuse a gift. Actual inheritance is different as you are named in the will.

The authorities can see money in a bank account and ask you to evidence where it has gone. That happens all the time.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 15/04/2025 17:31

So you're going to tell them you're going to report them for fraud, yet you haven't stated that you know for certain that all her benefits are means tested ones.

OP seems to be avoiding answering the most vital question: which benefits is this person claiming?

Especially now that DWP are asking people for their bank statements, PayPal statements etc & also have the power to check for hidden bank accounts.

Well why do you need endorsement from Mumsnet then? Just get on with it. Obviously you've shifted a bit from it's not in my nature 🙄

@ClareClareClareClare but why are you so angry and aggressive in your posts…pull back a bit and people are less likely to flame you.

Well if PIP no problem as not an Income Based (eg: means tested) benefit. But, as I've said before DWP are scrutinising UC accounts asking for valid ID, bank statements etc etc.
