To report this as benefit fraud

A relative is claiming benefits, can’t work due to health but is one of those who is always complaining about something wrong with her but is always able to do the things she wants to do. Can holiday abroad, always down the gym, etc. When she was working she was always making complaints against employers- one of life’s victims.

She sold a property a couple of years ago and has squirrelled about £40k away through investments. I think has got her mother to do this for her.

I’m so fed up of seeing people like her take the piss. I 100% support a welfare system and it really pisses me off to see it abused like this. And meanwhile we are working our arses off and not able to afford the foreign travel and gym memberships.

I’m so tempted to report her secret savings to DWP.

We all know that people who are sick or disabled are not allowed to go on holiday,or to the gym. They are expected to stay indoors, preferably in bed. I mean, who the hell do they think they are, acting like normal human beings?

ClareClareClareClare · 15/04/2025 16:39

Yes it may well sound petty and vindictive. And I’ve not done anything for the reason that that is not my nature.
But i’m angry that someone can have £40k in savings and do nothing, whilst we work full time and have no savings because the cost of living is extortionate. It’s very upsetting actually. And she thinks it’s absolutely fine to do it, to essentially steal from other working people. And lots of people here also seem to think it’s ok, so that’s an interesting reflection of society at present isn’t it.

Do you know for sure? Because you should if your going to throw a nuke in someone's life you should know for absolute certain

I don't think the thread is quite going as OP hoped. Maybe she doesn't realise there have been so many threads like this recently.

Bed? A pallet of straw is good enough.

They are allowed a "standard of living " but not too high though , keep them in their place !

It’s not going in any particular direction. Im
interested to see what others think. I’m shocked how many people think you can hide your capital. I’m surprised how many people think that someone committing fraud should be left to it and if they get reported it’s the reporter who is the problem not the fraudster.

I tend not to listen to all the bollocks, benefit bashing headlines. But this thread has actually supported a lot of the spin disappointingly.

My mum sometimes pays for a little holiday for me (I am on benefits). I was told on here that it was fraud. How? No idea!

How do you know she is fraudulent? You don't know which benefits she is getting.

ClareClareClareClare · 15/04/2025 17:19

why would you hide your savings ?

I imagine she does realise - all too well.

You can’t just give money away so you can claim benefits. Shocked how many people don’t understand this.

I understand it but can you prove it? Say for example a grandparent died the mother inherited and says to the daughter I'm investing this money for you for when I'm gone that isn't illegal because the money was never in the daughters name nor was it in the will to go to the daughter so therfore no fraud and unless the mother goes into a home that money will come to.them

Actually no. Not a benefit basher by nature. Fully supportive of welfare system.
Fully unsupportive of benefit fraud.

Just report them then. Job done.
As pp have mentioned this is just a benefit bashing thread disguised as you being public spirited and not wanted hard working tax payers to be taken advantage of.

That’s not the same as moving your money out to someone else to pretend you don’t have money

Don’t you think benefit fraud impacts the taxpayer?

Are you completely sure its benefit fraud. Some benefit are not based on income or savings. Do you know exactly what benefits she is claiming ?
I don't think going on holiday means she is able to cope with a job

Notposting · 15/04/2025 17:23

It must be nice to have the time and headspace to worry about nothing but the details of your friend's financial arrangements.

So are you going to tell the people concerned that they're fraudsters and you're going to report them?

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 15/04/2025 17:24

Look, you clearly want to report her - so do it. Tell her you're reporting her, don't be a coward.

We aren't going to pat you on the back and say "oh aren't you good, aren't you clever, tackling benefit fraud one relative at a time, well done you". This thread is pointless.

Oh behave. If the criteria for a Mumsnet post was “this is the only thing I have time or headspace to worry about” it would be a small forum.

Amazes me on this type of thread that people seem to ‘know ‘ so much about their neighbour’s/friend’s/ relative’s financial situation.

It's a relative. Hopefully she's going to be transparent about why she's going to dob them in.

valentinka31 · 15/04/2025 17:26

Well I guess the money from property that was given to another person isn't relevant, even though in reality it's a kind of insurance for her.

Going to the gym and going on holiday is not not allowed on benefits. Going to the gym is a health activity that will, if you think about it, possibly reduce her cost to the NHS for treatment for being unhealthy.

I guess she's had some kind of assessment re: health, she will have had to have a continuous fit note from her GP and also fit for work assessments at regular intervals. What's wrong with her in terms of the listed ailment(s)?

You do sound very angry. I can understand why, but at the same time I don't think I'd advocate getting in the middle of it. I think I'd leave it be. Many people take the mick around us, not just with benefits, but in how they deal with other people, scam people, rob people, are mean, etc. Life is full of bad behaviour.

I'd concentrate on making your own life as good as possible and try not to get wound up by others.

Ethelflaedofmercia · 15/04/2025 17:26

My cousin is exactly the same. Been on benefits and goes abroad/gym etc… the difference is that I don’t care.

Just say his benefits were taken away, will I pay less tax? No. Will I be able to afford those things? No.

just concentrate on your life, it’ll make you happier
