Best bit was Bezos falling flat on his face outside the capsule!

Yes, that made me lol.
The rest of it was wtf did I just watch?

It's like they almost went into space but not quite. Just enough to defy gravity.

Maybe that's what moved them to cosplay Ariana and Cynthia?

I haven't seen the footage but I just listened to Heart Radio talking about it and they had a female trainee Astronaut explaining that they had two days safety training and it literally just went up and back down. Kelly Brook and KJ (?) proceeded to massacre what could have been an informative and interesting interview and it felt like a Saturday morning kids TV show interview.. very embarrassing. I doubt they would have them two interviewing Tim Peake in the same way. It just feels so wrong to have KP plastered all over the news when there are so many interesting and inspirational women they could 'big up' - Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock springs to mind.

To be fair, if you want serious commentary and interviews from Heart, then you're barking up the wrong tree. I think they have actually interviewed Tim Peake and Brian Cox - in the same inane style. Heart is entertainment, not STEM.

I agree re. Dame Maggie. I've met her and she's really lovely, as well as super interesting and intelligent. It was a privilege to meet her.

Meanwhile Sunita Williams just spent 9 months in space and surprisingly didnt look hot and sexy when she returned. Must not be the right kind of astronaut.

So true.

My favourite bit was her needing to kneel on a mat to kiss the ground.

To be fair, I feel like doing this every time a plane I'm in lands safely (wouldn't need a mat though). And that's aeroplane travel - incredibly safe. You wouldn't get me in a rocket for all the money in the world!

Galatine · 15/04/2025 13:56

I suspect her career may be flagging and she needs the publicity!

True, maybe i'm just irritated by the two presenters!

I think everyone’s missing the point a bit. Yes, to us mature adults, skin tight space suits and lip gloss seem a bit silly. But for young girls, who DO like to look glam at all times, it shows them that they can do science and still be cool. If they all went up looking frumpy and frazzled, most teen girls wouldn’t engage or be interested, they wouldn’t even glance at the news story. This is a way to get them interested in STEM.

I think there are two messages to adolescent and teenage girls:

  1. Study hard, achieve things, write a great novel, travel into space, find the cure for cancer ...... but no-one will actually give a shit unless you are also hot and glamorous and groomed.

  2. Even in space there is no escape from beauty standards.

Even the message of 'Don't worry if you like science. It doesn't mean you are frumpy and the boys will still like you.' is horrible. Why do girls always have to be forced to think about their looks or being evaluated by males?

Why was Oprah crying that's what I want to know

Because there was a camera on her.

Because there was a camera on her.

Of course was hoping it was for some more profound reason

Classy Hmm

From the BBC
Katy Perry says she feels "super connected to life" and "so connected to love" after landing back on Earth.
We know that the pop star sang a rendition of Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World while in the capsule.
When asked about the importance of her song choice, she said it was "about a collective energy, making space for future women, it's about wonderful world we see out there".
Her daughter, Daisy, was there to see her take part in the mission and was heard saying "mummy, mummy" as she went up.
The singer says the experience came "second to being a mum", which is also why it was a hard decision to take the mission on.

"The highest high. It is a surrender to the unknown," Perry says after landing back on Earth.
Perry says she really enjoyed the flight adding: "I couldn't recommend this experience more." If you have a spare £115k spare.... for 11 minutes
Asked if she will record a song about her experience she says "100%" and that she feels "really connected to that strong, divine feminine right now".

What a load of waffle

Indeed. "Mission" my arse. Would love to know what Colonel Eileen Collins, first female space shuttle pilot and first female commander of a space shuttle mission, thinks of this!

TheCatsTongue · 15/04/2025 14:45

I'm not sure why everyone is so critical, I found it rather inspirational, it has inspired me to find a billionaire and take a ride on his rocket.

Done that myself going too fast over a hill when driving an ambulance....

lifeonmars100 · 15/04/2025 15:32

Doing my best to ignore this utterly vain and wasteful piece of ego driven stupidity especially given that it has happened in the US which is on the brink of authoritarian rule. Is this meant to distract all the millions who will soon be experincing real ecomomic hardship?

HarshHimalayanWinter · 15/04/2025 15:33

Am I the only one who thinks they all looked so much better during the zero gravity footage? It took years off them and and also sort of corrected some of the wonky look several of them have in earth gravity. Like zero gravity is actually the best face lift you can get. Someone should make and market the ‘zero gravity face lift’. Gayle was the only one who came across well in the post interview I think - Katy and Bezo’s GF were just too cringe,

mummymeister · 15/04/2025 15:36

In the not so distant past, rich business people used to spend money on "worthy causes" like libraries and other public works to raise their standing within their communities.

Now they blow it all on quick trips up to almost space whilst still parroting their green credentials. Utter bollocks really isnt it. This flight cost a couple of million. just think what my local food bank could have done with that.

GraySILK · 15/04/2025 15:36

I heard her say something about it being fate and I thought fucking bollocks, if fate was true, why the hell would you get to live your dream life, singing a few songs, getting adored and paid millions for it? whilst billions of other people haven’t even got access to clean water.

Who decided you were worthy of a fantastic life and they weren’t?! Fate my arse! You were simply born lucky you silly woman, fate has fuck all to do with it.

Hwi · 15/04/2025 15:47

Showing my age, but oh, gosh, how it differs from Christa McAuliffe, it is her I think of when I imagine a female astronaut. But on the other hand, those were real astronauts, these are modern day space travellers. The world changes.

MananaPenelope · 15/04/2025 15:49

A colleague (also a scientist who can't bear to watch the footage) I met earlier irl brought it up. I might have changed my mind, I think it probably was science in action 🙃.

💡...a real-life experiment to see what happens to fillers in 'space' Did they puff up, shrink, or stay the same? Maybe that's what you saw @HarshHimalayanWinter the effect of zero gravity on fillers. We need a clown emoji!

Women in STEM my arse indeed.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/04/2025 16:07

Governments don't have the money to explore space. Of course billionaires will and look to create space travel for profit. It doesn't mean science can't learn from it.

Really? A load of middle aged (Perry is 40) surgically enhanced women squeezed into fancy dress costumes doing something just because they can afford it is the way to get young girls interested in STEM subjects? How insulting to them to assume that this is the only way to enage their intelligence and ambition. Do you genuinely believe that all girls and young women think solely about their appearance when considering what to study?

Bogginsthe3rd · 15/04/2025 16:19

I for one respect astronaut Katy Perry.

MananaPenelope · 15/04/2025 16:23

There is absolutely no evidence that this trip was designed to inform NASA or contribute directly to scientific research, it was very clearly a commercial space tourism trip.

RobertaFirmino · 15/04/2025 16:28
