They thought they saw the curvature of the earth very briefly, but it was Lauren's lips in silhouette against one of the viewing windows.

Good God! Wit!!!!! 👏👏

I think everyone’s missing the point a bit. Yes, to us mature adults, skin tight space suits and lip gloss seem a bit silly. But for young girls, who DO like to look glam at all times, it shows them that they can do science and still be cool. If they all went up looking frumpy and frazzled, most teen girls wouldn’t engage or be interested, they wouldn’t even glance at the news story. This is a way to get them interested in STEM.

Most of the teenage girls that I know who are doing STEM A levels (and I know a lot of them) are doing these subjects because they are good at maths and science and they think it will help them get a well paid job when they are older. I’m pretty sure they realise that it is nothing to do with being a space tourist in a tight space suit.

After all, it is Jeff Bezos who studied STEM subjects at an Ivy league, not his girlfriend.

Blinkingbother · 15/04/2025 07:50

Oh my lord - the utter drivel that Katy Perry came out with on her return🙈. I am really concerned how this is being portrayed as ‘aspirational’ to young girls…. My teen ds explained to his younger sister how degrading it was to real female astronauts like Sunita Williams to be equated with the super wealthy plastic space tourists - if he can see it so clearly why can’t she😭!

TheObligingSwan · 15/04/2025 07:57

One giant step backwards for womankind. Benny Hill in space!

WaffleParty · 15/04/2025 08:03

Couleur · 15/04/2025 02:25

I’m not sure I agree with the sarcasm here. I think the point is that they aren’t astronauts by any means, but still had enough bravery to strap themselves onto a massive exploding rocket that absolutely has the capacity to go wrong at any moment. Yes, they are wealthy, and I’ll never have the chance to do the same, but I can admire that bravery - as I do with every astronaut.

A. Is is brave or stupid if you put yourself at risk for something completely pointless?
B. They’re NOT astronauts!! What an absolute insult to anyone who actually is

EasternStandard · 15/04/2025 08:03

EdithBond · 15/04/2025 07:25

Surprised the penis wasn’t pink. Like Harriet Harman’s election fem bus.

That’s it now. The floodgates have opened. More and more entitled people will be burning up the atmos, so they can come back and tell us what we already know: how peaceful, precious and fragile the earth looks.

If only we weren’t destroying the ozone with all that burning rocket fuel…

How much is this stuff going to impact the environment, so depressing.

Matronic6 · 15/04/2025 08:04

The fact that is being billed as an all female 'space crew' is insulting to female astronauts. They basically went on a very brief very high plane ride. I cringed when Katy Perry got out and kissed the ground.

Bitchy

But true.

She came across terribly when speaking before and after. As a Brit, Orlando Bloom would surely have been cringing…

Doubt it - this is the man who told the Sunday Times that he liked to spend time dreaming about roles not just for himself but also for women and minorities, so that he could be a voice for everybody. The whole interview read like Private Eye's Pseud's Corner on steroids.

When hat submarine that imploded near Titanic accident happen, did we say that the people in it were 'brave' and 'inspirational'?
When I first heard about amn all female flight into space (as it was reported as such) I imagined this slightly differently. This was just a bunch of tourists shot up in the air and they didnt have to do anything but sit down.
Im sure it was a cool thing to do for them. But I would not call what they did brave.

It would be interesting to see published the emissions per passenger for this tourist high flight.

You mean Orlando "Padding Naked" Bloom? I think he knows a thing or two about cringe. I recommend his most recent reality show haha.

Katy Perry going into orbit
CraneBeak · 15/04/2025 08:15

Its embarrassing. As if women can't have real jobs, and can at most play and pretend, as if they were children going on a "space experience" or some shit. Enraging. Fine if they want to spend their money on this little trip, but to market it as if being able to pay to go in a rocket is inspiring or that they're doing something socially important is insane.

Perhaps the newspapers want to come and film me going on a Brave Inspiriting Journey today (I'm going to Tesco's with the kids).

Fioratourer · 15/04/2025 08:16

I was intrigued, then I realised it was for 10 minutes. Katy holding up a butterfly and a daisy at the camera. Then the ground kiss. The sexy spacesuits aren’t what astronauts wear are they! It was ott and showed more what money can buy then girl power. I.e someone who works hard to achieve a dream in a set field. Disappointed!

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 15/04/2025 08:20

It was a vulgar display of wealth in the guise of "feminism" and girl power. The messaging is not about empowerment it is about money and the benefits of making a shed load of it. You don't need to work hard, study, get a degree, phd and so on to get into space you need to be rich (or marry a rich man). This is no way to promote STEM to girls or encourage them to take up STEM subjects at school. This tells them - be an influencer, popstar, tv personality, marry a rich guy and you can have whatever you want

Nominative · 15/04/2025 08:20

Couleur · 15/04/2025 07:20

This is a tad more explosive power than that.

You would be just as dead if a jet engine failed or blew up mid flight, so the bravery involved is more or less the same. Compare it, with, say, people working in hospitals and driving ambulances in Gaza and the Ukraine and I think you can see the difference.

Whatafustercluck · 15/04/2025 08:27

I've avoided any footage, and only seen the headlines tbh. The issue for me is in referring to them as crew or astronauts. They're passengers, tourists. Wealthy ones. But if I had KP's wealth, there's probably a lot of things like this that I'd choose to do (but it wouldn't be going into space or taking a submarine to the Titanic), so I don't think you can blame her for that.

Beyond that, her songs are catchy and I'll sing along to them with my 8yo dd. I have no views on her personality or her looks, or indeed her wealth and choices she makes.

miraxxx · 15/04/2025 07:36

They go up to just beyond the Karman Line, 100km up.This limit signifies the end of our atmosphere as the air is too thin to support normal flight and the start of 'space'. Most spaceships and rockets reach the KL in a few minutes. Orbit is a couple of minutes more. This is space tourism pure and simple, not groundbreaking science and available to anyone over 18 for 200-300k usd.

Exactly right. Low Earth Orbit may only be a couple of minutes more, but quite a distance.

Just touching 62 miles for a brief moment, whilst probably getting the heart pumping a bit, is exactly as you describe. It didn't push any boundaries. Top Gear almost managed it with an Austin Metro on the back of a home built rocket. People have parachuted from over 25 miles high.

HappydaysArehere · 15/04/2025 08:34

Not sure what Katy Perry was spouting on about. Seemed to be about so much love. Kissing the earth added another sentiment for fans to enjoy. All for 11 mins. Ridiculous.

Yes. And the tangible damage that’ll cause. And all the things they need to go without, to even get themselves back to the point of before they went, emissions-wise.

Like, if everyone sent their Amazon packaging to Bezos’ house and let him bury it on his land.

I was really angry at various news reports calling them "crew" when they were actually passengers.

i thought it was quite funny - how they could say that with straight faces after a day or so of “training”.

Yes - I’ve travelled on a plane so I must be crew or perhaps a pilot lol

Nowtnorsummat · 15/04/2025 08:49

It was frankly a waste of everyone's attention even for 10 minutes. But nice to see they resurrected the Dr Evil penis rocket

Classy Hmm

From the BBC
Katy Perry says she feels "super connected to life" and "so connected to love" after landing back on Earth.
We know that the pop star sang a rendition of Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World while in the capsule.
When asked about the importance of her song choice, she said it was "about a collective energy, making space for future women, it's about wonderful world we see out there".
Her daughter, Daisy, was there to see her take part in the mission and was heard saying "mummy, mummy" as she went up.
The singer says the experience came "second to being a mum", which is also why it was a hard decision to take the mission on.

"The highest high. It is a surrender to the unknown," Perry says after landing back on Earth.
Perry says she really enjoyed the flight adding: "I couldn't recommend this experience more." If you have a spare £115k spare.... for 11 minutes
Asked if she will record a song about her experience she says "100%" and that she feels "really connected to that strong, divine feminine right now".

What a load of waffle

Plus the things normal people will have to go without to balance the emissions of a few ultra rich who want a space flight. Feels like Hunger Games territory, the capital living it up and we’re meant to be entertained by slebs doing wasteful things.
