I think everyone’s missing the point a bit. Yes, to us mature adults, skin tight space suits and lip gloss seem a bit silly. But for young girls, who DO like to look glam at all times, it shows them that they can do science and still be cool. If they all went up looking frumpy and frazzled, most teen girls wouldn’t engage or be interested, they wouldn’t even glance at the news story. This is a way to get them interested in STEM.

How? These women weren't "doing science" were they?

We really are in the last days of Rome, aren’t we?

Yes. The age of deceit.

You would be just as dead if a jet engine failed or blew up mid flight, so the bravery involved is more or less the same. Compare it, with, say, people working in hospitals and driving ambulances in Gaza and the Ukraine and I think you can see the difference.

I agree that this stunt was more stupid than brave - or rather a miss-placed bravery compared to the situations you mentioned - but space travel is massively more dangerous than standard air travel.
Nasa estimate your lifetime risk of dying in a plane crash is something like 1 in 205, 552 while the risk of catastrophic rocket failure on a single mission is around 1 in 300.
The commercial space industry also has virtually no regulation - it's not that dissimilar to the submarine situation.

However, I completely agree with most people's take on this - that it has absolutely nothing to do with female empowerment or a celebration of women in STEM and just illustrates the complete disconnect the super rich have from the rest of humanity. Taking these kinds of unnecessary and pointless (in terms of scientific benefit) risks and wasting finite resources for 'fun' is completely amoral. The super rich have found yet more ways to behave badly - this time covered with a cynical veneer of female empowerment.

Compash · 15/04/2025 09:09

How much of the 11 minutes did it take, singing 'Wonderful World'? The other narcs on board must have been chewing their faces off at her hogging that much of the experience to herself...

ForFunGoose · 15/04/2025 09:15

Female ego packaged as girl power!!
I feel sorry for all the people who have to listen them tell the story of how they went into space!

KarlaKK · 15/04/2025 09:15

I was up a ladder painting when BBC iplayer tuned into it live. Couldn't be bothered coming down the ladder to switch it off so was relieved when the laptop's batter died. It was so cringy.

Had to listen to some of the Kardashians going on about girl power and Oprah being insincere. The "astronauts" were all asked for one word about the experience - can't remember what they all said, probably "profound", etc. Absolutely awful. I think the head of the Science Museum was raving about it too. Just dreadful. A load of bollocks.

whatapalarva · 15/04/2025 09:19

I haven't seen the footage but I just listened to Heart Radio talking about it and they had a female trainee Astronaut explaining that they had two days safety training and it literally just went up and back down. Kelly Brook and KJ (?) proceeded to massacre what could have been an informative and interesting interview and it felt like a Saturday morning kids TV show interview.. very embarrassing. I doubt they would have them two interviewing Tim Peake in the same way. It just feels so wrong to have KP plastered all over the news when there are so many interesting and inspirational women they could 'big up' - Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock springs to mind.

Quote from a journo from The i paper about right….

”the rich people equivalent of dogs peeing where other dogs haven’t yet”

I cringed so hard when I saw it Erghhhh

They go up to just beyond the Karman Line, 100km up.This limit signifies the end of our atmosphere as the air is too thin to support normal flight and the start of 'space'. Most spaceships and rockets reach the KL in a few minutes. Orbit is a couple of minutes more. This is space tourism pure and simple, not groundbreaking science and available to anyone over 18 for 200-300k usd.

Thank you - more information about space travel in this one post than all the hoo-hah around this whole ego trip...

When hat submarine that imploded near Titanic accident happen, did we say that the people in it were 'brave' and 'inspirational'?
When I first heard about amn all female flight into space (as it was reported as such) I imagined this slightly differently. This was just a bunch of tourists shot up in the air and they didnt have to do anything but sit down.
Im sure it was a cool thing to do for them. But I would not call what they did brave.

i dont t hink anyone called the submarine tragedy brave, it was shocking

MsFogi · 15/04/2025 10:38

All these billionaires/multi-millionaires want us to do our bit for the environment whilst they burn a shit-tonne of fuel for their equivalent of a fairground ride.

Stuff that

A. Is is brave or stupid if you put yourself at risk for something completely pointless?
B. They’re NOT astronauts!! What an absolute insult to anyone who actually is

Reading - carefully - is your friend. The second sentence in particular.

Lost all respect for Katy Perry now

Did you have any in the first place?!

I did see this on the news last night but I also caught the brilliant Maggie Aderin-Pocock interviewed on The One Show, who was the complete antithesis of this shower (scientist not included) intelligent, interesting and funny.

Ffgeefg · 15/04/2025 11:16

Why is everyone so angry? They paid for it and got to space.

Would you do it? Think about it seriously. It isn’t a plane ride. This is jet propulsion fuelled by explosive rocket fuelled engines.

I know I couldn’t. I can’t even go on the most tame of carnival rides.

FoxedByACat · 15/04/2025 11:20

Best bit was Bezos falling flat on his face outside the capsule!

🙄 Of course, Katy Perry’s bravery in being part of a jet rocket mission is not the same as the bravery of an ambulance driver in Gaza. FGS.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 15/04/2025 02:27

And apparently Perry held a daisy up to the sky on disembarking, because her daughter is called Daisy.

Do you have to have your cringe detector removed before you go into space?

Thank you. I was wondering why she was holding that up

Springhassprungthesunisout · 15/04/2025 12:35

The only upside - no-one could hear her sing! 🎶

SemperIdem · 15/04/2025 12:38

Annonymiss123 · 14/04/2025 22:32

Just watched it on the BBC News. I had second hand embarrassment when KP exited the capsule and kissed the ground! 🙄

My favourite bit was her needing to kneel on a mat to kiss the ground.

PerkingFaintly · 14/04/2025 22:26

It certainly looked like a load of bollocks, yes.

It did not. No bollocks were visible.

It looked like an entirely bollock-less penis.

It sure did look like a willy

But does that make them brave or does it make them foolhardy? You could equally well say that it takes bravery to try to climb a mountain when the weather forecast is bad and you haven't got the right equipment. It does, but no-one admires people who do that.

HRTQueen · 15/04/2025 13:16

Why was Oprah crying that's what I want to know
