My I suggest you look up one of the women who was taking part today:

Amanda Nguyen

Yes she probably has money but you know what, I'm not going to knock her doing this after what she went through and ultimately what she gave up to fight for victims of SA.

7inchesFromTheMiddaySun · 15/04/2025 02:53

I seem to remember that Katy Perry and her then-husband Russell Brand bought tickets for £150,000 each on Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic years and years ago. So at least she got the trip she wanted!

I can see all this going tits up just like the submarine did……

That thought crossed my mind, but at least it hasn't been built in some idiot's shed.

SantoriniSunrise · 15/04/2025 04:04

It's like they almost went into space but not quite. Just enough to defy gravity.

Feelingstrange2 · 15/04/2025 04:12

I half caught the report she was going. Thought, oh interesting, wonder if shell get stuck like those others. Next thing she's kissing the earth again! Took me longer to pop down the corner shop.

How much unnecessary co2 did that create (including her interview)?

Radiatorvalves · 15/04/2025 04:12

That “Love” speech was utterly cringey. DH a bit space obsessed but we all thought it was dire. It may have only been a short trip but could barely manage to watch the 2 min clip on the Telly without turning it off. 😣

I’m not sure I agree with the sarcasm here. I think the point is that they aren’t astronauts by any means, but still had enough bravery to strap themselves onto a massive exploding rocket that absolutely has the capacity to go wrong at any moment. Yes, they are wealthy, and I’ll never have the chance to do the same, but I can admire that bravery - as I do with every astronaut.

Is it brave when there's no ultimate good reason to do something?

Surely if a risky trip isn't necessary and at least trying to achieve a useful outcome and you still strap yourself in, you are stupid/selfish?

FagsMagsandBags · 15/04/2025 04:22

The interesting thing for me was less the women - but at least we did have a couple of scientists whose fares I'm assuming were subbed by the rich women paying to have a little loop the loop fun - involved and more the fact that the last time we had an all female space launch was in 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova went into space and since then although of course women have been in and out of actual space and not just on the edge of it, there hasn't been a female only space launch. That's pretty interesting.

This bunch? I can't get too bothered about it. Space tourism is going to be a thing because rich people want to do shit that mormal people can't, blah, etc. But oh my god(dess) the cringe. There was a point where my labia felt like they were trying to sew themselves together from second-hand embarrassment. I'm cool with "oh my goddess" if that's the way your roll, but seriously, probably better if you don't and I had a day of such woo today that people would look at me askance and ask if I was mentally well enough to comment on anything ever again. But we heard "Oh my goddess!", then "Oh my god!" and I could almost hear the god shouter wish she'd got it right and said goddess but too late, so then we get an even louder "OH MY GODDESS!" because we're women in space and "OH MY GODDESS WE'RE ASTRONAUTS!" Well, you're not are you? You're on the edge of space, you've not been trained to do anything useful. You're having a fun break and that's grand but you are an embarrassing twat, so shut up.

Someone said it's the last days of Rome? Definitely getting there. The US is going the way of Rome and has a little way to go yet but give it a generation and our children's children will be part of the new Empires of the East.

SpidersAreShitheads · 15/04/2025 04:42

Having an all-female crew for a space expedition would be empowering.

A bunch of wealthy women passengers wearing super-sexy tight matching spacesuits screaming dramatically as the cock-shaped rocket blasts into the air does precisely fuck all for female empowerment.

In fact, I’d go as far to say that it hinders it.

I appreciate there was a female scientist on board but this trip wasn’t about them. It was about Jeff Bezos giving his girlfriend a fun little trip and getting PR. The press coverage has all been about Lauren Sanchez and Katy Perry - as it was always going to be.

On the BBC, the Astronomer Royal for Scotland was pretty scathing saying trips like this are frustrating for scientists like her and turn space into a playground for the rich.

The absolute embarrassment of this trip being held up as aspirational for women is off the scale.

LobeliaBaggins · 15/04/2025 04:51

I thought of the 4 women astronauts who died in space, particularly Indian-American Kalpana Chawla who came all the way from a tiny village in India to be picked for a space mission.

TwinklyTornadoBear · 15/04/2025 04:59

It’s ok everyone. Lauren Sanchez has had the realisation that the earth is profound and we must protect it…

…By burning a f*ck ton of fuel so six people can have an indulgent jolly, largely funded by a bloke who sells crap to people who don’t need it and ships it around the world.

Last days of Rome indeed.

Does there have to be a good reason behind something to make it brave?

Seems odd. I think taking the decision to sit above all that fuel as it explodes beneath you, placing your complete trust on the workmanship and engineering of others, is the definition of bravery - no matter how experienced the astronaut.

myfitbitisfucked · 15/04/2025 05:15

just needed Meghan Markle in there to complete the horror. She could have taken some flower sprinkles and jam into orbit.

Neemie · 15/04/2025 06:23

The whole thing was a total cringe fest.

justlonelystars · 15/04/2025 06:35

I think everyone’s missing the point a bit. Yes, to us mature adults, skin tight space suits and lip gloss seem a bit silly. But for young girls, who DO like to look glam at all times, it shows them that they can do science and still be cool. If they all went up looking frumpy and frazzled, most teen girls wouldn’t engage or be interested, they wouldn’t even glance at the news story. This is a way to get them interested in STEM.

Could not disagree more.
The way to encourage STEM is not to sexualise it.

Have you never flown in a jet-powered plane?

HelenWheels · 15/04/2025 06:52

it is shocking, girl power indeed!

HelenWheels · 15/04/2025 06:54

it did remind me of that fateful submarine expedition

powershowerforanhour · 15/04/2025 06:55

"The way to encourage STEM is not to sexualise it."

Look up Joceyln Bell Burnell being interviewed by Tommy Tiernan.

LlynTegid · 15/04/2025 06:57

A woman who married someone knowing his behaviour was unacceptable (it was after the behaviour towards Andrew and Mrs Sachs), even though no rape allegations had been made at that stage, lost what little respect I had for her.

roofingtooting · 15/04/2025 07:10

They lost me with the hair, make up and nails.

How was KP "doing science"?
I appreciate there was at least one actual woman in STEM on the trip

DaisyDooordont · 15/04/2025 07:12

Apparently, while they were up there, Katy Perry sang ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong .

I just threw up in my mouth a bit.

They thought they saw the curvature of the earth very briefly, but it was Lauren's lips in silhouette against one of the viewing windows.

Bitchy
