To feel generally WTF by the way DH thinks

Firstly this isn't a super serious thread where I am annoyed with DH or anything.

Sometimes my head cannot do the mental gymnastics to come to the same conclusion or decision DH has about something.

Examples include:

  • currently sorting out car insurance. We share the car and the car is registered under my name. This time last year I was on maternity leave and so I was classed as "employed". I am now a SAHM and so the insurance is higher if I am the named driver. DH suggested we transfer the car to his name and make him the named driver as that makes the policy cheaper. And then if I go back to work next year, register the car in my name again and then make me the named driver. This would save a matter of £80ish a year. I do not think it's worth it.
  • our DD is 2. We are talking about different things we can do to save money for her. When talking about premium bonds, DH suggested we buy the maximum amount of premium bonds allowed. So far so good. And then if there are any winnings, to put them in a current account for DD so that "when she's 10, and wants to buy something like colouring pens, she can pay for it with that money". I'm sorry but, don't parents just pay for whatever their children need without putting it in a specific account for that child?
  • to not use the dishwasher because it is more time consuming from loading the dishes to taking out clean dishes than it is to wash them by hand
  • DH's one big dream is that DD gets into Oxbridge. DH said Oxbridge prefer state secondary schools and not private school students so DD should go to state school. I have no issues with DD going to state school but for that to be the single reason to send them is IMO a bit silly.

AIBU to feel a bit nonplussed by DH's thought processes or do they sound quite typical?

🤦🏻‍♀️

i can washup, dry and put away far faster than a dishwasher load, cycle and unload so i'm with him on that

If it takes you that long to load/unload a dishwasher, you are doing it wrong. It’s ridiculous to include the cycle in that, because the pout is, you can do something else whilst the dishwasher is washing the dishes.

The cycle doesn’t really factor in though does it, as you aren’t doing anything.

loading and unloading the dishwasher takes way less time than washing, drying and putting away by hand. I can have all my cooking pots and pans washed while we eat dinner.

It also costs way less.

another big plus is it keeps the kitchen clutter free. No piles of washing up after dinner, or constantly having to wash as you use something so you can use the kitchen surface.

i used to have constantly sore hands as well before i got a dishwasher.

I've just read on here that a short cycle takes around 3 hours, i' dont have 3 hours to wait after i've cooked of an eve (we eat around 9/9:20pm) and there's no way i could sleep without all the dishes put away, my mind would never settle!
I'm not bothered about the cost difference

Don’t believe everything you read on MN.

my longest, eco cycle is just under 3 hours.
Shortest is 30 mins, with a variety in between.

if we eat late I quite often stack the dishwasher and set the timer so it finishes at 8am. Everything washed and dried while I sleep. You don’t even have to be present when the cycle finishes, so you could stack it, set it to run and go to bed. No need to sit up and babysit.

at least everything is off the surface and the kitchen is clean, without having to spend an hour hand washing, drying and putting away.

Yes to saving money on insurance but why does he think you need to keep reregistering your car? You don't have to do that. And no. of owners affects value.

No to DC having to using any PB winnings to buy stuff like colouring pens - that's what pocket money is for. Any PB winnings should be invested/go into a high interest saving account in DC's name (and actually I'd just put the inital lump sum into a high interest savings account rather than PB but hey, your choice).

Madness to wash by hand when you have a dishwasher but as long as he's actually doing the washing up and drying then I couldn't get worked up about that.

Absolutely nuts that he's dreaming that your 2 yo is getting into Oxbridge.

So on balance, yes, he's a bit of a weirdo 😂
