To expect coffee?!?!

I've never posted a thread before. Please be kind to me as this is extremely serious and I might cry. Well, moderately serious

A couple of us have come to stay with friends who have recently moved away. I woke up early, as is normal for me. We've been told to help ourselves to breakfast etc if we want.

They do not have any coffee in their house. None. Zero. Nothing 😱

These are old friends of mine and wonderful people, and they used to drink the odd coffee but more tea drinkers really - but I was expecting some sort of coffee available. They're probably gonna have a lot of "down from London" visitors to stay now they've moved.

I have spent half an hour googling where I can get coffee on a Sunday morning round here. The options are limited or not early morning enough. I am beside myself. Or I would be if I had enough caffeine in my system to get a head of steam on.

YABU: bring your own coffee next time. These guys are now living a simple coffee free life in the country, get away with your high and mighty big city ways and bring your own

YANBU: it's normal to expect a bit of coffee in a house in this day and age. You'll be doing your hosts a favour if you mention this, or they're going to face hordes of desperate visitors with a dreadful level of unmet need in this new, country living phase of their lives, and the local community will be ravaged by coffee starved londoners desperately roaming the streets early doors like a host of annoying affluent zombies in nice trainers

I don't drink tea or coffee, but I always have it in the house for guests. YABU to expect it though. If it's so crucial to you, bring your own next time.

sashh · 13/04/2025 08:54

Have you tried the freezer? I once couldn't find any coffee at a relatives house because they kept it in the freezer.

I enjoyed this post a lot! My husband looks forward to nothing more than his coffee in the morning. He goes to bed at night excited about it. He’s also considering a switch to decaf at the minute so it’s not even necessarily the caffeine hit, he just loves it! I also enjoy my coffee. When there is no coffee available it physically pains us. So I do always know that if I stay somewhere the coffee won’t be the kind I want (we have filter coffee at home) and I will have already pre planned where to get coffee! So I have been burnt in the past and learnt from my mistakes. I do have people stay a lot though and I will always stock what they want! For example I don’t take milk at all (use alternatives, never liked it) but will always buy a carton if I have guests because they take it. I’m not really a tea drinker but I will get tea in for people staying. It’s just being considerate!

You know now going forward. You won’t be faced with this level of horror again. I’m so sorry you had to experience this. But you’ve made it through! 😂

YANBU
I take a moka pot and milk fluffier whenever I go to stay with someone. Happy to make flat whites for all who need one… and it is a need - caffeine withdrawal causes headaches, so ´just have a cup of tea’ is not the answer!

But there is caffeine in tea though, and OP reckons she’s had 3 cups so that would be equivalent or more than a coffee.

dijonketchup · 13/04/2025 08:56

You should have been warned.

“By the way, we don’t have any coffee in the house, not even decaf instant. We understand if this is a dealbreaker and you no longer wish to come.”

Hope you have one by now OP !

YANBA

I'm allergic to tea so you could say I'm biased but actually more than that if I know I have tea drinking guests I don some gloves, buy some tea and get out the special tea stirring spoon.

No excuse for not having both - even if it's the cheapest nastiest stuff (under the guise of not drinking it and not knowing any better) it's better than not having it at all.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 13/04/2025 08:58

I don’t drink instant coffee but I still always have a jar in for visitors! Who are these people??

Jollyjoy · 13/04/2025 08:59

I mean I’d always have it available for guests, so bit unusual. But all the people I know who feel like you do about coffee, come equipped with an aero press, a bialetti (is that right?) and all the necessary equipment to service their addiction. YABU not to prepare if it’s this important!

Then you aren’t as caffeine dependent as you thought so that’s something. You’ve already had a nice big caffeine fix, you just want the taste of coffee, hopefully it will come soon! But YABU, tea is superior and they have that. I’m totally tea dependant and take tea bags with me when staying elsewhere.

Wilfrida1 · 13/04/2025 09:01

We don't drink coffee. I buy some in for guests .... and have to buy a new one every time. I now have Azera, the one in a tin, which I am assured won't got to one rock solid lump.

But the only thing I think you can REALLY expect your hosts to provide is loo roll. Everything else is a matter of personal preference.

PS. I never go anywhere without my EG teabags.

BucketFacer · 13/04/2025 07:42

YANBU - "tea or coffee?" is just part of hosting, even if someone is just coming round for an hour let alone staying overnight. I had a similar situation on a week long holiday last year - only decaffeinated coffee was available 😱 nightmare.

On a previous thread I was complaining about a friend popping round unexpectedly because I don’t have tea, milk or sugar in the house ( nor any cold drinks).
Other posters assured me that no one cared. Knew I was right.

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 13/04/2025 09:02

I’m guessing they’ve moved somewhere scenic, hence the expected hordes of visitors. I think this thread is a cautionary tale for those doing similar to never, ever let your friends know where you’ve moved to unless you’re prepared to have a spare room on permanent standby with a wide range of beverages available on demand !!

Drowninginprobate · 13/04/2025 09:03

Not read the full post BUT

have you looked in nice caddy size containers?

my coffee is always decanted into a portmerrion one but is in the cupboard as we are rare coffee drinkers.

flatwhiteinabucket · 13/04/2025 09:05

⬆ please refer to username😁

Reminds me of the time we ended up on the far far West coast of Scotland, thinking in all our naivety that we would be able to get a meal and hot drink after 5pm .....

Reader, we scoffed a lurking packet of custard creams instead.

And now I don't travel without a sarnie and a coffee bag (from Taylors)
😁

Waves to anyone that knows me

Fingeronthebutton · 13/04/2025 09:05

As an addict you should always take your stash with you wherever you go, just in case 😉

KhakiOrca · 13/04/2025 09:05

I put YABU
But I ran out of coffee yesterday and could really do with one! And I'm actually drinking tea out of a glass jug.

LadyLucksalot · 13/04/2025 09:05

The absolute horror. Completely unacceptable not to have some coffee in. My in-laws are the same. What do they offer plumbers - a glass of squash?

I have emergency sachets in my handbag of tea and coffee. When we have to go and see the in-laws, I take a small jar and a box of tea. I would take my teapot but it's a cast-iron one and too heavy for hand luggage. They don't like it if I leave anything with them as teabags clutter up the kitchen (one box!) and there's apparently no room for a little jar, or tiny teapot.

I really hope you've found some, OP. Enjoy. And bon courage to you.

Loloj · 13/04/2025 09:06

I can’t start the day without a coffee - it’s my morning ritual and I love it.

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 13/04/2025 09:06

ReplacementBusService · 13/04/2025 07:41

This is a good plan. Emergency kit!!

Next level- Java Lava coffee bags -made by Taylors, the nearest you can get to real coffee. Individually wrapped.

I don't leave the house without them in my handbag.

ReplacementBusService · 13/04/2025 08:05

Thank you for understanding. It is very hard🙏

Hope youve been saved by now

cherrymaoam · 13/04/2025 09:07

I would be horrified. A morning coffee is one of the best parts of my day!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 13/04/2025 09:08

I’m allergic to caffeine so the tea and coffee in my house is obviously decaffeinated. I used to keep regular tea and coffee in my house for guests but whenever I went to their houses no decaf was ever available. So I stopped. There’s usually a lot of face pulling and ‘what’s the point’ comments about the decaf tea and coffee in my house. Tough.

I appreciate this thread is tongue in cheek but I had no idea that people were so addicted to caffeine. I’d hate that! Glad I don’t drink it if it turns you so crazy 🤪

Its not the same
Tea is a band aid

Titasaducksarse · 13/04/2025 09:10

It's bad hosting. Until very recently we didn't drink coffee very often at all but I'd always have some fresh ground in fir guests and a cafetiere.
