To expect coffee?!?!

I've never posted a thread before. Please be kind to me as this is extremely serious and I might cry. Well, moderately serious

A couple of us have come to stay with friends who have recently moved away. I woke up early, as is normal for me. We've been told to help ourselves to breakfast etc if we want.

They do not have any coffee in their house. None. Zero. Nothing 😱

These are old friends of mine and wonderful people, and they used to drink the odd coffee but more tea drinkers really - but I was expecting some sort of coffee available. They're probably gonna have a lot of "down from London" visitors to stay now they've moved.

I have spent half an hour googling where I can get coffee on a Sunday morning round here. The options are limited or not early morning enough. I am beside myself. Or I would be if I had enough caffeine in my system to get a head of steam on.

YABU: bring your own coffee next time. These guys are now living a simple coffee free life in the country, get away with your high and mighty big city ways and bring your own

YANBU: it's normal to expect a bit of coffee in a house in this day and age. You'll be doing your hosts a favour if you mention this, or they're going to face hordes of desperate visitors with a dreadful level of unmet need in this new, country living phase of their lives, and the local community will be ravaged by coffee starved londoners desperately roaming the streets early doors like a host of annoying affluent zombies in nice trainers

I have no coffee in the house. Guests are told in advance though.

irregularegular · 17/04/2025 14:59

YANBU

I think it is really off not to be able to offer guests a choice of coffee or tea. I don't know anyone who couldn't offer at least an instant, and the vast majority could do better.

RedPony1 · 17/04/2025 15:21

We don't have coffee in the house either, neither of us drink it and all my friends are happy with a tea!

Teajenny7 · 18/04/2025 09:16

As you can guess from my name I drink tea.

Saying that I tend to have coffee when out because most people don't make tea the way I like it. I dispair when someone pops a teabag in a mug.

I am a bit of a tea snob and am becoming a coffee snob too.

Luckily I have 4 independent coffee shops and a Costa within 10 minute walk. I never buy tea at any of them.

I would expect people to be able to offer some tea or coffee to guests. I also. keep hot chocolate and decaf coffee for guests.i don't like either.

HevenlyMeS · 18/04/2025 11:07

Bless you thank you for your compassionate enlightenments I didn't know there's coffee bags until seeing your comment
I've known of the granulated tea but don't like it much's proper tea bags
Thank you God Bless You&Yours Blissfully Forevermore

I think you're right and I've actually decided that I am unreasonable. I'm bringing my own everywhere from now on

The sensible thing also would be to give up coffee. But id probably end up addicted to jam, or ginseng tablets, or worse, Pepsi Max.

Anything but Pepsi max
even crack is better than that

HevenlyMeS · 19/04/2025 10:54

You're not being unreasonable
You're Immensely sensible to begin bringing your own coffee from now on God Bless You
I also think when folks have someone they care about, come to stay with them, it's compassionately considerate, caring & thoughtful to simply just make sure they have some items which are suitable for their visitors requirements & needs
To be honest I wouldn't dream of not checking with my guests that I have groceries to their liking & I would feel completely self absorbed & selfish if I just presumed, they were ok with whatever I just happen to have!

Tootsiewootsie · 21/04/2025 14:11

As I am elderly, there are very few people other than family who visit me now. Those who do visit know that coffee is not something I keep in my cupboard.

HevenlyMeS · 27/04/2025 20:10

It must be difficult/inconvenient to purchase coffee especially when you don't consume coffee yourself
The decent difference is you most considerately & kindly inform folk that you don't behold coffee, so they're forewarned & have opportunities to bring some of their own 😇

speakout · 28/04/2025 07:22

To "fornwarn" someone you don't have coffee??

A tad dramatic.
Is it that big of a deal? coffee is expensive, and only keeps a few months.
Can't we just accept what we are offered? A tea, herbal infusion, cold drink etc.
I know many people that don't keep tea or coffee in their homes.

Exactly. I just take what I’m offered or drink water if I don’t feel like any of the hot drink options available.

Tbh I don’t even realise I’m out of coffee sometimes and I drink it most days 😂 so it’s definitely no big deal for me to visit someone’s house and find out they don’t have coffee. It’s not a necessity for me.

Reading this thread it’s surprising to see how many people normalise what I see as extreme caffeine dependency/addiction.

Worse things to be addicted to but even then - they should realise it’s a them issue and there’s nothing wrong with people not making sure there’s coffee in the house for visitors.

I’m glad OP agrees she is BU and will take her own coffee everywhere with her from now on seeing as she gets that desperate for it. Problem solved.

Greenandchocolate · 28/04/2025 07:44

TessTimoney · 15/04/2025 08:37

I reckon if you're that dependant on coffee you have an addiction problem. I have a cup first thing every morning but would be OK with tea if no coffee was available 😳

This exactly. And if I had an addiction to coffee or anything else for that matter, I’d ask the hosts if they had any or not before I went.

If they say they don’t, I’d be like no worries I’ll bring some myself.

It’s not that difficult to bring a bag or sachet of coffee.

This is dreadful 😔 a moment silence for decaff

A few years ago, staying with a relative, they only had decaf. I didn't think it would be a problem, I mean, sure, I have 3 coffees in the morning to get me out the door, but hey, I can live without the caffeine, right? God, I felt so tired in the mornings. It was day 3 before I realised I was missing the caffeine.

DinoLil · 28/04/2025 07:59

I don't drink hot drinks but always have tea, coffee and hot chocolate available for visitors. I don't always have milk though, I don't use that either!

I accidentally put my BIL into caffeine rehab. He drinks vast quantities of tea so I kept providing it on request. After 24 hours he says he had a headache that just wouldn't shift and we realised I'd been giving him decaff tea the whole time. 😬

Caffeine addiction may not be a god thing but it is very real.Going without it for a day can end up making you feel like you have flu and struggling to function.
Obviously that's not a good thing, but it's not just as simple as just go without for a day...

I think I am sensitive to caffeine. I drink decaff everything apart from a can of diet coke a day which has less than a coffee. If I stop having the diet coke, I can last for 48 hours before I start to withdraw, if you have ever seen Trainspotting when Renton holes up to come off heroin and is kind of flu ridden and near death that is me. It's awful. On the plus side, when i have diet coke or an odd coffee, the shot of adreneline/lovely fizzy feeling from the coffee is excellent.

I tend to drink decaf but have got some lovely loose leaf tea and I'll drink a pot of that on a Saturday. It gives me a lovely feeling of contentment but I always suffer a "comedown" later in the day.

HevenlyMeS · 03/05/2025 16:47

It's just a word, meaning she's considerate & kind to inform them
Nothing dramatic whatsoever
Your feeling the need to put down a simple word choice is more dramatic! I'm just complimenting this lady for kindly taking into account, that some folks just might like to know there's no coffee
Especially Knowing numerous folk do feel the benefits of a coffee in the morning or whenever
It's always pleasant & kind to inform folk & maybe the drinks a person might choose to have, aren't agreeable with some folk So those individuals would appreciate the Thoughtfulness of their friend
Always nice to be nice & put ourselves in other's shoes - It doesn't cost a penny!

Cherrysoup · 03/05/2025 17:20

Last time i went away, I took pre-ground coffee and a cafetière. I’m also a coffee desperado in the morning!

This is a good plan. Emergency kit!!

I take an aeropress anywhere where I think coffee may be in short supply

HevenlyMeS · 03/05/2025 19:14

I think it's really sensible of you to be prepared
I do love my Mug of coffee in the mornings & would feel lost without it 🤗

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 30/03/2026 11:49

It’s quite scary that people are so addicted to caffeine that they can’t function without it. That alone would put me off drinking it. I get really ill if I drink caffeine so my body clearly doesn’t want it. Are those of you who can’t do without caffeine not worried about the impact it’s having on your body?

Gettingbysomehow · 30/03/2026 12:31

I cant live without my coffee.

It must really scare you if you needed to reply to a thread that's almost a year old 🤣

I wrote on the post when it first came out and posted again as others were still talking about it. Not sure what’s funny about that? It’s just having a conversation. Maybe ‘scary’ was the wrong word? Maybe it’s more of a concern that people get so stressed if they can’t have caffeine? I wouldn’t like to be so addicted to something.
