To expect coffee?!?!

I've never posted a thread before. Please be kind to me as this is extremely serious and I might cry. Well, moderately serious

A couple of us have come to stay with friends who have recently moved away. I woke up early, as is normal for me. We've been told to help ourselves to breakfast etc if we want.

They do not have any coffee in their house. None. Zero. Nothing 😱

These are old friends of mine and wonderful people, and they used to drink the odd coffee but more tea drinkers really - but I was expecting some sort of coffee available. They're probably gonna have a lot of "down from London" visitors to stay now they've moved.

I have spent half an hour googling where I can get coffee on a Sunday morning round here. The options are limited or not early morning enough. I am beside myself. Or I would be if I had enough caffeine in my system to get a head of steam on.

YABU: bring your own coffee next time. These guys are now living a simple coffee free life in the country, get away with your high and mighty big city ways and bring your own

YANBU: it's normal to expect a bit of coffee in a house in this day and age. You'll be doing your hosts a favour if you mention this, or they're going to face hordes of desperate visitors with a dreadful level of unmet need in this new, country living phase of their lives, and the local community will be ravaged by coffee starved londoners desperately roaming the streets early doors like a host of annoying affluent zombies in nice trainers

On a serious note. I think it was quite thoughtless of them to not have any in for staying guests

Years ago when I was fully caffeinated, I was staying with my sister and began to feel really ill. I put it down to the sofa bed being wonky and my feet possibly being higher than my head.

Heading home feeling grim I stopped for a coffee at a services and instantly felt better. She’d been decaffing me the whole visit.

Your DSis is a monster. Time to go NC with her.

I’d be disappointed at the lack of coffee but not sure you can hold your hosts responsible.

I reckon if you're that dependant on coffee you have an addiction problem. I have a cup first thing every morning but would be OK with tea if no coffee was available 😳

ZestyJoey · 15/04/2025 09:31

JoanIsNotAwful · 13/04/2025 07:38

I don't think you can expect it everywhere, so I'd take my own if it's that crucial! DH never drinks it so never had it in before we moved in together.

My thoughts exactly. I only like a particular brand (lavazza ground) or if it has to be instant then it has to be nescafe azero. Having said that I know it's my responsibility to take care of my own coffee needs and wouldn't expect anything else from my hosts.

ZestyJoey · 15/04/2025 09:37

I think the real problem is that coffee has mild addictive properties. So anyone who's used to drinking it every morning will feel a bit of unease when they can't.

I need to know more about coffee bags, this is where I'm going wrong in my life 😰

You really really don't.

RampantIvy · 15/04/2025 12:02

Goodness, there are some really holier than thou posts from posters who don't like grown up hot drinks.

......and are poor hosts! 🤣

Tootsiewootsie · 15/04/2025 12:57

You wouldn't get coffee in my house. I don't drink it and don't keep it the house.

But if you had friends coming to stay would you give them the heads up so that they know to bring their own?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/04/2025 13:42

RampantIvy · 14/04/2025 19:45

That's a bit of a hysterical overreaction.

Why? I don't like the smell of it, it's vile stuff. Thankfully DH doesn't drink it so I don't have to put up with the smell!

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 15/04/2025 16:05

While I voted that you are being unreasonable I do think that if the people you are staying aren't coffee/tea drinkers then they should state that so you can bring your own if you want to

eggnog7 · 15/04/2025 16:10

If people were travelling to stay with you, it is polite to ask for any requests they may have with drinks. I don't drink decaf, so never have it in, but when my friend visits who can't have caffeine I buy decaf coffee as the host. So YANBU.

PeloMom · 15/04/2025 16:17

I carry a couple of instant coffee sachets around for situations like this as I can’t function without coffee. It’s surprising how often I’ve had to use them. I also always have a protein bar to hand as people host differently.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 15/04/2025 16:18

BogRollBOGOF · 13/04/2025 17:00

Checks the date on our tea and coffee...
...Tea needs replacing in the summer and coffee in the autumn...

I try to keep it in, but it's annoying that you can't buy sensibly sized packs like 10 tea bags, and have to bin the vast majority of the 80 pack/ jar. We don't tend to have cows milk in so caffeine addicts often have to suck up the oat milk. Tea/ coffee drinkers are often fussy about what they like too.

It's annoying being expected to buy in things we have no intention of using, and often don't get the favour returned with drinkable drinks in other people's houses. Much of the time I have to put up with water and pretend I'm happy with it because they don't keep fruit/ herbal teas, and only have diet/ stealth diet drinks if they do have something cold in. 🙄

I drink decaf coffee and take it with oat milk. Imo it's the best way, apart from the decaf because it makes me feel like Im being robbed lol

PeloMom · 15/04/2025 16:22

@RampantIvy i wouldn’t give heads up- I expect if someone has strong preferences for something, to bring their own. For example, we are not tea drinkers- we have some (mostly herbal) tea bags rolling around but I wouldn’t go stock up all sorts for just in case and then few years later throw them out; if someone drinks English breakfast tea daily they’ll be out of luck in my house.

Miaowzabella · 15/04/2025 16:43

I like coffee, but it's a bit weird to be unable to manage without it for a day. The same applies to everything really, except air.

SkaterGrrrrl · 15/04/2025 21:18

OP YANBU.

Also, you need a cafetiere mug. Perfect for travelling. Just add a scoop of ground coffee. Pour your hot water in and the mug itself is the French press if you see what I mean....

This is what I use, a portable espresso maker. I take it to work if I'm outside, to hotels, to my BF's house since he doesn't drink it...

henlake7 · 16/04/2025 14:04

Surely it's just normal to offer tea or coffee to visitors? Same as you would with builders.
I always have tea in even though I find it disgusting in case someone wants it (not like tea or coffee goes off much, is it?).
Although I do warn them I only have plant milk in and they might have to bring their own milk!

violetqueen6 · 16/04/2025 14:14

Thank you for this thread @ReplacementBusService , it has brightened my day. 🙂

We have an array of various soft drinks.

Soft drinks? What sort of drinks? I'm picturing you offering diet coke or lemonade with breakfast! 😂

hazelowens · 16/04/2025 15:37

My other half doesn't like coffee, taste or smell so before we moved in together I either took coffee with me or just didn't drink it. My youngest son is nearly 18 and doesn't like tea or coffee so I know when he moves I'll be taking provisions with me.

TylwythTeg · 16/04/2025 22:40

I recently stayed at my DP’s house and forgot to bring my coffee (he’s an absolute ‘tea and nothing else’ drinker). I can’t function without three cups in the morning, however after my first day horrors, I conceded and had tea on the second morning. And water. WATER. It was actually ok… (however, made mental note to stock up for this weekend!!)

FeetLikeFlippers · 17/04/2025 14:54

YANBU and I would expect people to have something as basic as coffee available for guests. I don’t drink tea because the mere smell of it makes me gag but I always have tea bags in the house for visitors.
