To expect coffee?!?!

I've never posted a thread before. Please be kind to me as this is extremely serious and I might cry. Well, moderately serious

A couple of us have come to stay with friends who have recently moved away. I woke up early, as is normal for me. We've been told to help ourselves to breakfast etc if we want.

They do not have any coffee in their house. None. Zero. Nothing 😱

These are old friends of mine and wonderful people, and they used to drink the odd coffee but more tea drinkers really - but I was expecting some sort of coffee available. They're probably gonna have a lot of "down from London" visitors to stay now they've moved.

I have spent half an hour googling where I can get coffee on a Sunday morning round here. The options are limited or not early morning enough. I am beside myself. Or I would be if I had enough caffeine in my system to get a head of steam on.

YABU: bring your own coffee next time. These guys are now living a simple coffee free life in the country, get away with your high and mighty big city ways and bring your own

YANBU: it's normal to expect a bit of coffee in a house in this day and age. You'll be doing your hosts a favour if you mention this, or they're going to face hordes of desperate visitors with a dreadful level of unmet need in this new, country living phase of their lives, and the local community will be ravaged by coffee starved londoners desperately roaming the streets early doors like a host of annoying affluent zombies in nice trainers

I hope they provided decanted snacks from the supermarket in a see through bag tied with a ribbon and calligraphy note attached. Oooo and some homemade bath salts too.

twoshoes86 · 13/04/2025 09:54

I think this post was intended with a lot of humour and as a caffeine head has provided me with a lot of laughs!

Ineedcoffee2021 · 13/04/2025 09:57

However DO NOT turn up at my door and ask for a hot chocolate because that’s all you drink. Fuck off Louise, you’re 53

Gold!!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 13/04/2025 09:57

Next time you'll know to bring your own.

Their other visitors aren't your problem.

Condensedmilkdrinker · 13/04/2025 09:58

Never thought I'd be eagerly waiting for an update as to whether a stranger on the internet manages to get a coffee. But here I am 🤷‍♀️
OP has my sympathies, I can't start the day without my beloved Tassimo coffee!

HellDorado · 13/04/2025 09:59

YABU. I used to buy coffee in for guests, but it was so rarely used that the last time I offered to make a coffee, the grains had turned grey 😳

I now take the sachets from hotel rooms so that I have a few just in case, but I wouldn’t necessarily think to buy it in specially unless I knew someone didn’t like tea.

Hankunamatata · 13/04/2025 09:59

Cafetiere mug. Best travel purchase ever

anyolddinosaur · 13/04/2025 10:01

Probably a way to discourage the hordes of visitors who will descend on them like a cloud of locusts - and not bring any wine, chocolates or pay for meals out.

If anything is essential in your life you take it with you.

Alondra · 13/04/2025 10:04

I didn't vote because you didn't allow for what I'd do - wake them up and ask where I could get my caffeine fix.

Kingsleadhat · 13/04/2025 10:04

DustyLee123 · 13/04/2025 07:42

I always have a cappuccino sachet in my handbag for coffee emergencies!

Same. I have a friend who only has decaf which is no bloody use in the morning, so I take my own. Having said that I think it's basic hospitality to have tea and coffee in for guests

Years ago when I was fully caffeinated, I was staying with my sister and began to feel really ill. I put it down to the sofa bed being wonky and my feet possibly being higher than my head.

Heading home feeling grim I stopped for a coffee at a services and instantly felt better. She’d been decaffing me the whole visit.

I had this before when staying with friends. Unbeknown to me they had decaf tea only. Driving home I felt awful, like a really bad hangover, husband was the same. We stopped at a service station and got tea and coffee and felt miles better. It was only when we visited again we realised they were completely decaf and put two and two together.

speakout · 13/04/2025 10:05

Not a big deal.
As a child my parents never had coffee in the house- ever.

GiftWrappedKittyCat2 · 13/04/2025 10:05

If it's life or death, maybe pack it yourself in future! I can relate...

BeaAndBen · 13/04/2025 10:05

Instant, even the good stuff,

Contradiction in terms, @CautiousLurker01 .

They aren’t even similar. Instant coffee is to fresh coffee what strawberry laces are to fresh strawberries. ‘Vaguely reminiscent’
is probably the most accurate description.

@ReplacementBusService , I hope you are thoroughly caffeinated now.

Ilovelblue · 13/04/2025 10:06

I always take Taylors/M&S/Sainsburys coffee bags when I go on holiday as hotels often only have instant coffee in the rooms. Appreciate you're not staying in a hotel however.

On the tea front, I have two friends who drink only decaff and peppermint, so I tend to swipe these from hotel rooms to keep in for them!

WhatterySquash · 13/04/2025 10:08

Oh god OP I’d be frantic. I don’t actually think they’re obliged to provide coffee so I wouldn’t blame them, but like you I would have assumed there would be some. I’d be out driving/taxi-ing around until I found some, otherwise I’d get the most horrendous headache 😳 I know it’s not good, but it’s my only real vice/addiction. Your thread has made me realise I do need to carry coffee bags on trips so thanks!

ReplacementBusService · 13/04/2025 07:44

This is dreadful 😔 a moment silence for decaff

I only drink decaf now after weeks of insomnia. But I do have some normal Nescafé still. 🤣🤣🤣

Thomasina79 · 13/04/2025 10:12

I’m afraid I am one of those plebs who cannot drink any of the mind boggling choices of coffee nowadays, cappuccinos make me feel sick. I always take my own Nescafé instant if we go away.

like people say, I’m sure there will be a garage open. I too need a couple of coffees in the morning to get going. My DH always brings me one in the morning before I get up.

good luck with your hunt!

WhatterySquash · 13/04/2025 10:13

Sorry not read every post so someone might have said this, but what I’d do is buy a supply and a cafetiere (in the absence of a proper express machine) and say to them “I couldn’t find any coffee so I got these and I’ll leave them here for other visitors to use, you’ll probably have more coffee-lovers to stay” and ideally they will get more of what you bought.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 13/04/2025 10:13

I had to be reminded to get tea, coffee and milk in last time I has visitors. Don't usually have any in as I don't use them.

WhatterySquash · 13/04/2025 10:15

Espresso machine! Feckin autocorrect ☕️

sashh · 13/04/2025 10:15

SwanOfThoseThings · 13/04/2025 09:40

We have tea and coffee but we don't routinely have milk, so any unexpected visitors would have to drink it black, as my husband and I do.

Put some milk in an ice cube tray, one 'cube' is about right for a mug.

I only have milk in when someone is coming to visit.

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 13/04/2025 10:15

Okay so unless this post is in jest I think you are being over the top. Not having a coffee isn’t an emergency or worth crying over.

If you are that addicted then bring your own as others have said. Your friends may not like or drink coffee so it may not occur to them.

This is maybe the most ridiculous thing I have heard today.

Errors · 13/04/2025 10:16

I really do feel your pain on this one OP. I would be the same. I’m clearly an addict. I’d even be disappointed if they only had instant coffee which is bratishness of the highest order.

ChristmasCwtch · 13/04/2025 10:18

YANBU. It’s a thoughtful gesture from a host to have both for guests.

One of my very good friends never had regular milk and would make us all tea with oat milk 🤢 In the end I used to take a small milk over and leave it there every time I visited (weekly at least) 😂
