Missing bed in AirBNB

I've arrived in our studio apartment in Vienna with my 15-year-old son to find a double sofa bed only - the listing specified a king size bed plus a sofabed.

Host says sorry, the listing has been changed, but we can refund you the money? Only problem is, anything half decent is going to be treble the cost and we are both tired.

I've asked for a camp bed, answer was no. A refund is all they will offer, "and I'm sure you can get a last-minute booking somewhere".

I've raised a complaint with Airbnb support, but AIBU to think this is really poor?

If they have changed the listing between you booking and arriving, that is definitely not okay. They should be reimbursing you the cost of something with the correct number of beds, but I don't suppose they will. Do you have travel insurance? Would this cover it?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/04/2025 18:42

The bed part of the deal is the most important surely? How can they take one away?

bugalugs45 · 12/04/2025 18:46

Are they refunding your whole trip ? How long are you there for ? I’d suck it up for a 100% refund for 1 night

Daisy12Maisie · 12/04/2025 18:48

Can you just buy a cheap blow up bed from the Vienna version of Argos? Ask for a refund/ partial refund but still stay there. Far from ideal but may be the only option if the other places are too expensive.

ackarackaru · 12/04/2025 18:52

Just shared the sofabed and get a full refund surely?

ForFunGoose · 12/04/2025 18:52

I would be very cross. What type of sofa bed?
possible to use the cushions as a bed for teen? Sounds like you will have to manage but it’s not ideal.

We're here for a week - where do we go, though? Everywhere is ££££

Can you get an airbed? I think that’s the best option to salvage this.

Radiatorvalves · 12/04/2025 18:55

I’d go for a cheap blow up bed and live with it. And try and get money back. This happened to us in Italy recently but the hosts were apologetic and sorted it.

everythingeverything1981 · 12/04/2025 18:56

Just share the bed, awkward but what can one do, or take turns on the floor (get a camping mattress).

RedHelenB · 12/04/2025 18:57

You could probably buy a campbed

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 12/04/2025 18:59

Find a decathlon and buy a camp bed.

dammit88 · 12/04/2025 19:00

Id share the bed, get a refund and then book another trip ;)

MesmerisingMuon · 12/04/2025 19:01

Is there a shop you can buy a sleeping bag and roll matt from?

Do Amazon prime or similar do next day delivery?

If everything is too expensive then you'll have to find a solution then leave an awful review.

I'd try and look for something else then have a paperwork trail asking the owner to pay for the equivalent.

2025ishere · 12/04/2025 19:01

Putting a pillow or cushions down the middle of the bed can help it feel a bit more separate
Also agree but an airbed and cheap duvet etc if needed, or ask hosts for single bedding if there isn’t any spare anywhere. At a pinch I’ve used a large towel as a sheet on an airbed
very annoying though

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 12/04/2025 19:08

How much was the air bnb? Hotels.com is coming up with options for around £100-£150 a night. Quidco have cashback. Though takes months. Jamdoughtnut have 3 percent cashback also.

Air bnbs look more expensive tbh.

Travel insurance would not cover this. The insurers would rightly think that air bnb is liable for any recompense.

stayathomegardener · 12/04/2025 19:19

Make sure you contact airbnb to flag this up.

potentially the host will have to cover your costs after airbnb have relocated you.

bugalugs45 · 12/04/2025 20:45

It’s not ideal obviously for a teenage boy and his mum but I think I’d still stay for a week , either sharing the bed or one of you takes the floor ( preferably the teenager ! ) .
Are you getting 100% refund for whole 7 nights if you stay ?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/04/2025 20:55

Try the sofa bed tonight then get airbed and sleeping bag if it not ok sharing.

Mandylovescandy · 12/04/2025 20:59

Get onto to Airbnb support and ask them to sort you something else. Look yourself for an option beforehand as they will suggest a lot of unsuitable "equivalents". Similar happened to us and we got new accommodation (at no extra cost) plus compensation but it did take a bit of persistence with Airbnb to get there

Plmnki · 12/04/2025 21:31

Next time book a hotel. Air bnb destroys neighbourhoods. The owners don’t care about screwing up their neighbours so it follows they don’t care about the customers. It’s obvious if you think about it.

you wouldn’t have this problem with an actual hotel which is subject to customer reviews on trip advisor etc. if you’d booked a proper hotel when you decided on the trip it wouldn’t have been outrageously expensive.

I’m pretty sure the refund option means they can’t stay there.

The point of the refund is they have to move out. They weren’t being offered a refund and allowed to stay
