Missing bed in AirBNB

I've arrived in our studio apartment in Vienna with my 15-year-old son to find a double sofa bed only - the listing specified a king size bed plus a sofabed.

Host says sorry, the listing has been changed, but we can refund you the money? Only problem is, anything half decent is going to be treble the cost and we are both tired.

I've asked for a camp bed, answer was no. A refund is all they will offer, "and I'm sure you can get a last-minute booking somewhere".

I've raised a complaint with Airbnb support, but AIBU to think this is really poor?

@EdithBond - OP can’t have a full refund if she’s continuing to stay in the apartment because she’s getting use from it and stopping someone else from using it. A 50% price reduction sounds pretty fair.

I’d expect, and fight for, a full refund.

The accommodation was falsely marketed. A sofa bed and an air mattress is very different from a king size bed and a sofa bed.

If they knew it was a party of three, they should have communicated about the lack of beds at the time of the booking. No one expecting to sleep in a king size bed for a week, should be expected to sleep on a sofa bed.

Sorry, realised there’s only two of you. But point still stands. At very least, they should have communicated the discrepancies at the time of booking. Presumably, there were photos of the king sized bed. Imagine getting to an hotel having paid for a room with a king sized bed and there’s only a sofa bed? The bed is a big part of what you pay for.

Airbnb should be providing you with a 2-bed apartment in the same part of town without you paying any extra.

They can't magic one up if there's nothing available though, can they?

I suspect whoever the host is has several apartments in the same building and has taken a more lucrative booking from a bigger group for the three bed thinking they would palm you off with the sofabed as there are only two of you. I wouldn't be happy on the basis I want a proper bed - a lot of sofabeds are not what I'd want to sleep on for a week.

Smallmercies · 13/04/2025 10:34

What most annoyed me was the refusal to provide anything at all besides cancelling the booking - surely to goodness they could have organised a camp bed?

I bet that's what happened, as the pictures are a bit different

Can you not reach out to AirBNB to see if there's something in their Ts and Cs to help you. It sounds like a fairly rough hand to be dealt by inconsiderate owners?

We're here for a week - where do we go, though? Everywhere is ££££

Complain to Airbnb and make it their problem

I also suspect this ^
Glad that you got at least something from them and hope you’ll sort it out. It’s so annoying, you’ve chosen them based on their info, it doesn’t matter if you can share or not. It’s not for them to decide. You paid for certain offer and ordering camp beds etc was not a part of your plan .

Stories like this put me off using Airbnb completely.

And to be fair, I've had many years' happy experience of Airbnb, in Denmark, Italy, England, Belfast, Spain and Edinburgh. It's my go-to for accommodation and still will be.

They were very helpful, I felt they had my best interests at heart.

Dogsbreath7 · 15/04/2025 08:12

Have you complained to Airbnb and asked them to find accommodation?

I book hotels for this reason……

That’s not always a guarantee, my DS and I stayed in a Holiday inn, booked on hotels.com as a room with 2 double beds. Of course there was only the one bed and the hotel confirmed they only had rooms with one bed. Yet on hotels.com it was still offering the 2 bed rooms.
I got a 50% refund for that as well. I ended up having to share a bed with my adult DS though which I could have really done without. He’s very large and he snores.
