Missing bed in AirBNB

Smallmercies · 12/04/2025 18:20

I've arrived in our studio apartment in Vienna with my 15-year-old son to find a double sofa bed only - the listing specified a king size bed plus a sofabed.

Host says sorry, the listing has been changed, but we can refund you the money? Only problem is, anything half decent is going to be treble the cost and we are both tired.

I've asked for a camp bed, answer was no. A refund is all they will offer, "and I'm sure you can get a last-minute booking somewhere".

I've raised a complaint with Airbnb support, but AIBU to think this is really poor?

Stay there tonight - complain to AirBnB in the morning - they will refund partially and should put something toward finding something else too.

Changing the listing between you booking and you arriving isn't on and will be against AirBnB's T's and C's.

So the flat had a room with a bed, plus a sofa bed…. What is now in the place where the bed was? Sounds v dodgy
sorry This has happened

We're here for a week - where do we go, though? Everywhere is ££££

Air bb should pay for somewhere else for you

ps. I thought you said 5 nights by mistake so the prices are based on that if the daily rate aren’t indicated

Ah, this is one of the risks with the private listings, although the removal of a bed is super rare. And of course it’s bloody rubbish!!! Airbnb or booking dot com are not big hotel corporations to provide you with another room, they are just platforms, so we can either look elsewhere or buy a makeshift bed. This airbnb host will nor be successful after your review.

Shops will reopen properly on Monday (they will be mainly closed on Sunday, I think it’s like Germany). A couple of folded duvets on the floor will probably be equivalent to a decent mattress.

Try Urban Island apartments. We stayed there in February, lovely apartments and very reasonably priced.

Smallmercies · 13/04/2025 06:37

Looks great, but it's more than double the cost! 😢

What’s the budget as I can’t see a price for that one

Have you actually looked for a hotel online?

Zonder · 13/04/2025 06:58

@APocketFullOfRye if you scroll down just a little way it gives options ,- a studio with two single beds is 956 for 6 nights.

Lipstickandlashes · 13/04/2025 06:59
  1. Complain to Airbnb. As the vendor, they need to put this right.
  2. Did you book using a credit card? If yes and Airbnb refuse to rectify this by finding you a property of the same standard, dispute the charge with your credit card provider and keep receipts of all additional expenses incurred as a result of the vendor’s mistake.

Im afraid OP there’s nothing on booking.com atm that suits pricewise other than a Hostel sleeping in a dormitory or one bed. ( except for the ones I posted upthread but already ones gone now )

Maybe it would be cheaper ( and tbh more convenient ) to buy a blow up bed on Monday

Smallmercies · 13/04/2025 07:07

Thank you all for your moral support and helpful suggestions!! I've got a 50% refund on the stay and will get an air mattress. 😊

Is that the response from Air BnB? Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay now.

The accommodation suits you, except for the bed, so sorting that out yourself will be the best option.

Sleep on the doona
Take the sofa pillows apart to make a bed for son.

Buy a camp bed tomorrow - or a couple of doonas or sleeping bags etc..

I thought you would. Air BnB are hot on keeping the customer happy with a rapid response. The owners have learnt an expensive lesson.

Starstar7 · 13/04/2025 08:49

This means nothing to me

Nant90 · 13/04/2025 08:49

Next time book a hotel. Air bnb destroys neighbourhoods. The owners don’t care about screwing up their neighbours so it follows they don’t care about the customers. It’s obvious if you think about it.

you wouldn’t have this problem with an actual hotel which is subject to customer reviews on trip advisor etc. if you’d booked a proper hotel when you decided on the trip it wouldn’t have been outrageously expensive.

What rubbish. Airbnb is a business like any other and dependant on keeping clients happy or it won't last long - not for the company itself if enough hosts are rubbish and certainly not for the hosts themselves. I never book any unless there are several reviews and find them extremely reliable and accurate. If you object to them on moral grounds that's one thing, though big cities like Vienna are always going to have a huge reliance on tourism and need accommodation for it in one way or another and hotels don't suit everyone, but making out that it's an unreliable way of sourcing accommodation is just wrong.

Occasionally things go wrong with any business, including hotels. OP got a great solution and can now enjoy the holiday with a bit more spare cash than anticipated.

EdithBond · 13/04/2025 09:01

I’d expect, and fight for, a full refund.

The accommodation was falsely marketed. A sofa bed and an air mattress is very different from a king size bed and a sofa bed.

If they knew it was a party of three, they should have communicated about the lack of beds at the time of the booking. No one expecting to sleep in a king size bed for a week, should be expected to sleep on a sofa bed.
