Feel annoyed we can’t go on another holiday this year

Lifestooshort1542 · 10/04/2025 15:35

We usually do 2 abroad holidays a year one week each and 3 uk short breaks aswell.
This year we have come away abroad for 11 nights with the idea that if we came longer that would be our abroad holiday this year.
We have our 3 uk breaks booked this year too.
Well it’s nearing the end of our abroad holiday and I’m the type of person who’s always got to have something booked to look forward to (holidays are our thing we don’t spend money on anything else) so I’m now starting to get that holiday blues sad feeling of we are heading home in a few days and where usually we would be back in August we won’t be back until April again next year.

AIBU for thinking that waiting a year after an abroad family holiday is hard? Or do I need a reality check and look forward to our abroad holiday this time next year and we will do 11-14 nights again.

Financially we can afford to go in August this year but hubby works for his parents business and when I broached the subject to his mum that we may do a sneaky week in August she promptly informed me that he didn’t have any holiday days left (in fact he is already over his allowance of holidays with the breaks we’ve got booked in the uk this year)
I said well he can take a weeks unpaid and she said it’s not about the time off we’ve got a business to run and work to do.
So that annoyed me 😂

AIBU?

Will you be able to take the leave? Or is that not a factor for you?..

Miaw 😹

CoralOP · 10/04/2025 17:46

Before everyone has their knickers in a complete twist someone was on yesterday asking if they should pay £700 a house and garden clean, someone the other day paid 20k for cutlery, the general concensus was go for it, its worth it etc etc.
If OP has a few extra grand a year for another overseas holiday which brings her happiness and memories why are you angry at her?
I go on plenty holidays and many other areas of my life go without so that I can direct my money towards them. If you aren't in a position to do that at this moment in time there's no need to be nasty to someone who can.

There's times Ive cried in a heap on my kitchen floor because my bank was empty on payday (before the bills came out) but I was never once annoyed at someone for having 2 or more holidays, I'm sure at different times of their lives they couldn't afford it, its swings and roundabouts.

bettydavieseyes · 10/04/2025 17:46

This is such a weird post. Of course you are being unreasonable?

Cancel the UK breaks and do another foreign one?

I wouldn't get on the wrong side of your MIL, it sounds like she is a big part of the reason you have this lifestyle...

Bravo, honestly you couldn’t write a better wind ‘em up thread. Please tell me you don’t work and are jetting off on parent in laws time and money just to top it off? Sorry, I mean ‘hubby’s’ money.

I hope MiL makes another side thread, be the the first unanimous YANBU for the in laws ever…

Nope I do work, I’m a full time locum Pharmacist so leave isn’t an issue for me. Thanks for the assumptions though 😉

Not rft … I get it op, in future years do the 2 shorter ones as that suits you better, for this year you will just need to let it go. As someone who also needs regular breaks to look forward to and hates the unpredictable uk weather I do understand what you mean.

Birch101 · 10/04/2025 17:48

Actually no do you have children if so tell his employer he is requesting legally entitled parental leave ....

No. It's not that she's in a position to have many holidays.
It's her AIBU and moaning about not having another foreign holiday this year.

Yes you are being massively unreasonable and I can’t believe you had that conversation with your MIL.

and even more of a twit for using the word "hubby"

🤮

She can be upset if she doesn't get to go away again for another year when she's so used to going more regularly than that.

Someone else can be upset they only go on holiday every 3 years but that no reason for someone who can only go every 5 years to be nasty to her 🤷‍♀️

StartAnew · 10/04/2025 17:51

@Lifestooshort1542 Life is too short to wait a year for something you really enjoy, but why is the only thing you really enjoy going on Holiday? Are there not some lovely activities you could do as a family from home which would make you just as happy?

Smallmercies · 10/04/2025 17:51

YABU for going on about "abroad holidays" as if "abroad" is just one big place!

So you do work but you have all the free time in the world where you’re not actually earning money. Righto. And believe me, the not working thing is the kindest assumption I’ve made reading this thread so you’re welcome. Here’s your 🥄, keep going.

No, I'm just clarifying why such a post will garner negative responses.
I am well aware of the argument.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 10/04/2025 17:52

Yabu. Surely you know that running a business, particularly a family one, doesn't mean that they can disappear willy-nilly. Indeed, by the sound of it, you dh has already take the piss a bit, and his mother is entirely correct.
You, I'm sorry to say, are sounding rather petulant

I'm baffled where she said she has all the free time in the world, I imagine she get 5ish weeks off work a year where she can travel.

Absolutely everyone who read about the 20k cutlery thought that was insanity. It just meant for the rest of the thread the bar was unattainable for ‘most ridiculous splurge ever made by a non A lister off their face and being allowed internet access’.

Baxdream · 10/04/2025 17:55

I absolutely agree with you! We both have stressful jobs and holidays are our thing.
we waited a year previously and it was hard. We aim for 2 a year too.
personally I’d cancel a uk one to get an abroad one in

TalkToTheHand123 · 10/04/2025 17:57

Wow such an unreasonable MIL. They should insist he takes you away and treat you right.

Ariela · 10/04/2025 17:57

Never go abroad for holidays, can't stand the whole check in, plane, reclaim baggage cycle, although to be fair I only take a tiny rucksack nothing in the hold (only been abroad twice in 25 years), so I'm not one to advise really.
However, why not plan some days out in the UK, there is so much to see and do, maybe set up weekend breaks to places you've never been before.

100percenthagitude · 10/04/2025 17:57

... and if @Lifestooshort1542 's MIL was able to "promptly inform" her that her DH had no holiday left, as well as remind her that a business needs to be run, what are the chances that she already knows that her little prince and his princess bride are monumental pisstakers?!

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 10/04/2025 17:57

Bloody hell OP. You set yourself up to get your arse absolutely handed to you. For what it’s worth, I can understand your disappointment but if it was me, I would have had enough self awareness to realise to keep it to myself and give myself a shake and a reminder of my incredible place of privilege.

She said she can have leave anytime she wants, probably due to being a locum and not in full employment. Or whatever other made up nonsense that is to follow. Probably inherited 2 million from her Uncle who owned a puppy farm or something equally provoking.

I couldn't care less about her ability to pay for holidays, I love holidays and can afford them as well. It's the total lack of awareness around leave allowance and sense of entitlement to time off that I find jarring.
