Feel annoyed we can’t go on another holiday this year

We usually do 2 abroad holidays a year one week each and 3 uk short breaks aswell.
This year we have come away abroad for 11 nights with the idea that if we came longer that would be our abroad holiday this year.
We have our 3 uk breaks booked this year too.
Well it’s nearing the end of our abroad holiday and I’m the type of person who’s always got to have something booked to look forward to (holidays are our thing we don’t spend money on anything else) so I’m now starting to get that holiday blues sad feeling of we are heading home in a few days and where usually we would be back in August we won’t be back until April again next year.

AIBU for thinking that waiting a year after an abroad family holiday is hard? Or do I need a reality check and look forward to our abroad holiday this time next year and we will do 11-14 nights again.

Financially we can afford to go in August this year but hubby works for his parents business and when I broached the subject to his mum that we may do a sneaky week in August she promptly informed me that he didn’t have any holiday days left (in fact he is already over his allowance of holidays with the breaks we’ve got booked in the uk this year)
I said well he can take a weeks unpaid and she said it’s not about the time off we’ve got a business to run and work to do.
So that annoyed me 😂

AIBU?

You are incredibly lucky op. I also love going abroad and have very little in the way of treats. But finances do not allow regular holidays for us. I’m very much looking forward to our one UK holiday this year in August, and feel lucky to have that. Practicing gratitude might be helpful for you.

Lifestooshort1542 · 10/04/2025 17:02

Thanks for all of the comments so far, I do feel very lucky and I am grateful for the holidays we have make no doubt about that.
I realise not everyone is in this fortunate situation, but when you’ve been used to it it is disappointing not to have that to look forward to in the way of an abroad holiday every 5-6 months and I just feel a year will be a long wait.

I’m a holiday wanker and don’t class holidays in the uk as holidays, I just don’t feel the same about them as when I go abroad. I would cancel one of your UK ones and go again in August.

Daffodilfields101 · 10/04/2025 17:22

Are you Kate Middleton?

Seriously though you are going to get absolutely flamed on here. I do think you’ve got a very privileged lifestyle to be able to afford so many holidays. If your dh ‘em hasn’t got any holiday left then he won’t be able to go.

But it’s not ops fault that she’s better off than some of you, she said that they don’t spend money on anything else. Some people live for their holidays and like to go away lots.

Livpool · 10/04/2025 17:25

You sound like a spoilt brat!

Zippidydoodah · 10/04/2025 17:26

Fucking hell.

Wells37 · 10/04/2025 17:26

I wish not having a holiday was the biggest problem in my life! Get over yourself.

MyUmberSeal · 10/04/2025 17:27

OP, you are being dickishly unreasonable.

No not spoilt just very lucky and financially stable. That’s not a crime.

That is unkind to the Princess of Wales to make the comparison.

The OP should have thought about this when planning holidays to begin with, and perhaps chosen later in the year for their only foreign holiday abroad.

UK holidays are just as valid.

I’m just joking because op said her husband works for the family business.

Port1aCastis · 10/04/2025 17:33

Surely you cannot be whining because you only have 3 holidays you poor wee lamb how sad it is.

TheArcher · 10/04/2025 17:35

I don’t think we can afford a holiday at all this year, so cry me a river.

This seems precision engineered to be a wind-up post, but to answer your post in good faith: YABU

Agree with this ^

ohyesido · 10/04/2025 17:37

So you’re on holiday abroad now and you’re ruminating about not going abroad later in the year?

wake up and enjoy your holiday ffs

PoppysAunt · 10/04/2025 17:39

I'm guessing this is a reverse, and you are the mum?
You're running a business, no he's not entitled to more holidays. He and his wife are just going to suck it up. YANBU.
Your son and daughter in law, however...

SoScarletItWas · 10/04/2025 17:41

Froth check:
Hard done by OP definitely BU - check
Read the COL room fail - check
MIL disagreement - check

Come on OP, you tried a long break, found that a massively privileged FIVE shorter ones suit you better, so do that next year. It’s hardly the AIBU of the century, or something you need MN views on.

Uricon2 · 10/04/2025 17:41

Calling reverse, by the enraged MIL.

MoreChocPls · 10/04/2025 17:41

How many days holiday does your dh get?

Why bring Kate Middleton into this? Do you know what's been happening? She's certainly not been holidaying much.

Yes, that's my guess.

noctilucentcloud · 10/04/2025 17:43

Yeah you need a reality check. You have three more breaks to look forward to even if they're not abroad. A lot of folk don't have a holiday abroad each year, some people have never have been abroad, some people can't afford to go away at all. It's also incredibly unreasonable to expect your husband to be able to have more than his alloted time off even if it is unpaid, as your MIL pointed out there's still work to do. Be grateful you are in the position of being able to afford so many breaks, check your privilege and next time plan your year better so you use your annual leave on your highest priorities.

CountryQueen · 10/04/2025 17:44

Why does your husband need to go? A cheap 5/7 nights in August for you and the kids will tide you over

Bravo, honestly you couldn’t write a better wind ‘em up thread. Please tell me you don’t work and are jetting off on parent in laws time and money just to top it off? Sorry, I mean ‘hubby’s’ money.

I hope MiL makes another side thread, be the the first unanimous YANBU for the in laws ever…
