Is this unflattering for a bridesmaid?

Froum · 09/04/2025 22:02

My bridesmaids range in size from 8 to 12. No one happens to be plus size.

Would this dress flatter most of the women do you reckon?

We are late 20s

i have chosen to show the image of the plus size model as I think it highlights that it works on bigger sizes. What do you think?

I love this colour. 2 bridesmaids (cousins) are half Indian and it would look amazing on them. I would ask the other bridesmaids to fake tan

I can’t believe you actually said you’re going to ask your bridesmaids to fake tan 😳. You sound like bridezilla.

OMGitsnotgood · 10/04/2025 08:26

The first dress really looks badly made around tbe bust and looks very cheaply made. All of the other dresses you posted are so much nicer.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 10/04/2025 08:26

It’s very cheap looking.
not flattering.

Do not ask your bridesmaids to fake tan!!

I fear so. Bit too revealing and exposing for being ‘on show’. Mainly due to fabric appearing to show up every lump and bump, including undies. But also due to low cut strappiness and empire line, rather than nipped in waist. Puts an a lot of emphasis on boobs. And difficulty of finding right bra without straps slipping and showing. May be freezing, unless it’s at least 25 degrees in the shade.

I agree with PP that going with the same colourway in different styles allows bridesmaids to rock their own look and feel comfortable, yet still appear coherent as a group.

babyproblems · 10/04/2025 08:30

I think it’s not flattering at all tbh. The fabric is very unforgiving and any sweat will be instantly visible! The colour aswell will wash people out. Better to go with a warmer tone and not cool. Cool tones don’t suit most people.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 10/04/2025 08:33

It might be worth looking into having them made. If it’s a simple style you’re after, like that first dress, you might find it’s not that expensive. That way you can choose the fabric you like, and the bridesmaids all end up with flattering dresses because they are made to fit them individually.

Babybaby2025 · 10/04/2025 08:34

I think i get the vision, the very simple 90's style slip dresses are fashionable. And I've seen a lot on tik tok / insta brides in very figure hugging, slim line simple dresses, with bridesmaids in slip/satinny dresses, it does look good. But they are all very thin. I've been an 8 (at 5'9 that's very slim) and I'm a 12 now, I could never get away with those dresses as despite being slim I've always had a protruding lower belly pouch, those materials would just hang to it and I would feel so self conscious. And to me, a wedding is a long day, I like to indulge on the canapés, Prosecco, the meal etc, I would be scared of eating or drinking in a dress that figure hugging in case of bloating. I'd always recommend 'flowwy' for a bridesmaid, it suits pretty much everyone, and everyone will feel so much more comfortable.

For mine, I used i think azazie, told everyone colour (dark green) and let people pick their own. I had 1 apple shape, 1 pear and 1 tall willowy bridesmaid so finding a dress to fit them all would have been a challenge. It looked great in the end, dresses all very similar but slight differences on sleeve / neckline/ waist band etc

So this is the only other dress I have found that I like. But will it look weird cause the groom and groomsmen have gone for navy suits

They’re likely to feel comfier in this. And if bridesmaids feel comfortable and confident, they’ll look more elegant.

Think it goes fine with navy suits, especially if ties and buttonholes are the same bluebell shade.

Pretty low cut at back, which makes it harder to keep a bra from being on show. Again, fabric risks showing bumps/undies on hips and tummy.

FleurDeFleur · 10/04/2025 08:37

Anything goes with navy suits.

Bollihobs · 10/04/2025 08:48

Have a look at Azazie.com they have this colour in structured form satin which would look much better on.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 10/04/2025 08:49

It looks like a nightie.

Surely you can find something more flattering. Even your size 8 bridesmaid may have a few lumps and bumps she'd rather disguise and feel self conscious in that dress. I'd go for something fitted around the boobs which skims over the torso and hips, in a more forgiving fabric.

Roselilly36 · 10/04/2025 08:49

Too plain, looks more like a slip.

What it looks like on a slimmer person

This is a model, and even she may have wobbly bits which have been airbrushed out of that photo.

I assume your bridesmaids are not models and that at least some of them have wobbly bits.

I would second a PP's suggestion to look at JJ's House. If possible, choose your colour and then get your bridesmaids to choose their own style of dress in that colour.

What it looks like on a slimmer person

It looks good on this model not because she's "slim" -it's because she has the right body shape for it. It would be very unflattering on most body shapes. It looks like what we would in the old days call a "slip".

I think it's awful.

Ginnnny · 10/04/2025 08:52

That really isn’t a nice dress I’m afraid

MiddleAgedDread · 10/04/2025 08:55

I'm a size 12 and do not consider myself slim. that dress would look awful on me. Even on the smaller model the fabric ruching makes it look like she's got droopy boobs. Satin is really unforgiving.
I actually like the colour though.

TiredEyesToday · 10/04/2025 08:58

Have you thought about finding a dress you like in a lighter colour and having them dyed to the colour you want?

Trovindia · 10/04/2025 09:09

Froum · 09/04/2025 22:50

I do like this. I wish the sleeves were less fluttery

Edited

It's an easy job for a seamstress to remove those sleeves, recut them and put them back so they are less gathered.

mumofbun · 10/04/2025 09:12

@Froum look on Etsy - I got made to measure dresses there in the colour of my choice for a fraction of the price of the shops

Bubblemonkey · 10/04/2025 09:12

It’s awful. Looks like an old lady nightie 🫣
