Recently been teaching in secondary schools and met a kid with the exact same name as a very well-known and and iconic male celebrity, along the lines of Brad Pitt, Harry Styles, Zac Efron.

I imagine the kid gets a lot of stick. A little divided by it, it's cool but the kid will forever be getting comments on it and I just don't think it's fair on them.

James Dean used to empty my septic tank. Not the famous one though!

justanotherimperfectmum2025 · 09/04/2025 20:30

We called our DD Jessica and our last name is Jones. I Completely forgot there’s a Marvel character with the same name! Also forgot there’s also Jessie J till my DSiL started calling DD that! Luckily, both are not bad and don’t think my DD’s generation are going to remember or know much about them 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣🤞

I also worked with a Peter Cook. He must be in his late 60s by now. And a Richard Whittington. He was a bit of a knob tbh. I know a John Lewis. My favourite one was a lad called Tom Baker. Brilliant name. He must be mid 20s now. None of his contemporaries had a clue who Tom Baker was, but all his teachers had a little smile to themselves.

I used to go out with a Richard Whittington, who'd be 71 now.

Could it be the same one? The one I knew grew up in Croydon but moved to Sussex in the late 70s.

JustSawJohnny · 09/04/2025 20:51

Is it Bob Carolgees?

Stillkips · 09/04/2025 20:58

I used to work with a George Michael…. and his brother was called Michael?!?

SorcererGaheris · 09/04/2025 21:14

In my very first year of school (this would be 1992-1993) there was a boy in my class called Robert Redford.

Of course, at that time, none of us four and five year olds had any idea there was an actor of the same name.

scorpiogirly · 09/04/2025 21:43

I know of a Michael Jackson.

I think my one would be mid sixties, and lived in Gloucestershire. He reckoned he was related to his famous namesake.

I know a few Ellas who are tired of hearing Umbrella by Rihanna sung at them too

Letty186 · 10/04/2025 08:05

I met Donald Duck once, he was born and named prior to the cartoon (met him a long time ago and he was old then)

I couldn’t believe it when a little girl in my dc reception was Indiana Jones! Mean

Hopefully she'll get together with the Harrison Ford that I know of.

I've worked with a Jamie Bond 🙄

Maray1967 · 10/04/2025 08:27

I taught a student decades ago whose name was the same as a football hero from the 70s. His parents had deliberately chosen it to honour the player and club. He never said his name when asked without seeming to be embarrassed by it. And he said he was terrible at football.

Jane’s long-lost brother!

Thanks for explaining that one…I didn’t get it even though I actually love that book! Duh 🙈

ClassicStripe · 10/04/2025 09:07

My son has the exact same name as a video game character and shortly after he was born the game got turned into a TV show. Luckily it’s a cool character!
Not Mario or Luigi by the way!

justanotherimperfectmum2025 · 10/04/2025 09:09

I once worked In a College and taught a student called Christopher Cross! There’s a singer called that isn’t there?

Poppymeldrum · 10/04/2025 09:26

I remember standing in the school playground, when ds came running over

'Harry potters dead mum!'
'Eh,don't be silly sweetie,he's not real,hes just a person in a book/film'
'I'm telling you mum,Harry Potter is dead!'
'OK sweetheart'

Felt a bit guilty the following day when I found out,via the school newsletter that Harry Potter was indeed dead

Mr Potter, the school caretaker had locked up the school, walked across the playground and dropped down dead halfway across,on his way to lock up the hut that was the schools breakfast club/after school club

Poor guy,he was found about an hour later by a passer-by (who spotted him laid on the ground and rang 999,he hadnt been spotted by anyone else due to the slightly odd layout of the playground and the angle of the street)

I was once picking up a friends ds from his school, when I heard a mum say to her dd
'Come on Britney,we need to pick up Taylor,Christina and Rihanna'

Why you'd do that to your children,I don't know

viques · 10/04/2025 10:13

I used to work with a charity who regularly got donations from a Mrs Mary Christmas. I reckon she met him in a nightclub and thought “ This is fate, he has my name on him!”

BizzyLizzyandLittleMo · 10/04/2025 11:24

I knew a Gordon Bennett once. Had stick for it his whole life!

Or Nick Cotton?
😆

I stayed in a street in the south of France called Rue Gordon Bennett, it made me chuckle. I think it was down to the hairpin bends!

How so? Unless is particularly unusual. Brad, Zac and harry are common names. My first name is the same as a famous person too. I don't get stick.

Well that’s obvious isn’t it!! If your name is Kate Jones of course you won’t get stick. If your name is Kate Moss you might.

DaffodilAlliance · 10/04/2025 17:25

We had a Michael Jackson at my school. He was older than me, so I’m not sure if he got teased. I thought it was amusing though!

Naming your child the same name as a celebrity isn’t as bad as the very normal name of a man I knew… Michael Hunt.

The weather presenter on TV from many moons ago?

CommentHere · 12/04/2025 19:05

A child can change or shorten a name if they like, if they don't like the association with a celeb. It's easy to do changing school, college or working.

I know a James Dean (not Jimmy, James) and a Colin Farrell. Also a Lorraine Kelly. My own name is a female version of a sportsman and that's my married name! I could have kept my maiden name, but didn't really care.

LoveFridaynight · 12/04/2025 19:17

Could be worse. I was friends with a guy at college called John Doe. He was used to it by then but admitted he hated it when he was younger.
Don't know if his parents just weren't aware but did feel a bit sorry for him.
