To think this is cruel from the parents? Child's name

Recently been teaching in secondary schools and met a kid with the exact same name as a very well-known and and iconic male celebrity, along the lines of Brad Pitt, Harry Styles, Zac Efron.

I imagine the kid gets a lot of stick. A little divided by it, it's cool but the kid will forever be getting comments on it and I just don't think it's fair on them.

Could be worse; I know someone who shares a name with a murderer

Don't live in Blackpool do they?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/04/2025 23:00

There's a 13 yr old Bradley Cooper in my school.Noone bats an eyelid.

My DD’s best friend is called Holly Wood.

I know a Holly Reath 😁

In 2019, working in schools, I had;

8 year old Alan Carr
10 year old Randy Jackson
12 year old James Tiberius Kirk

The last one, I didn't find cruel as no one really knew his middle name, so he was just James or Jamie Kirk.

The first two I did think were horribly cruel and both kids got a hard time for their names, especially Alan Carr who was neurodiverse and relentlessly mocked. He'd often cry about the teasing.

Randy wasn't given a hard time as much for the relation to the Jacksons, more the fact that his name was slang for "horny" locally. Lots of sniggering from parents at pick up etc. I mean of all the names you could have picked in the 2010s....Alan Carr and Randy Jackson 🙄Poor Kids.

Of course it's the full name. There are many Zacs and Harrys out there, but they also had the same surname, Efron, Styles.

exactly op. That was completely implied. Read the thread people FFS!!!

I used to work with a Micheal Jackson.
He wasn’t impressed about having a famous namesake. He always looked very put upon whenever anyone remarked on it.

But he was about the same age as the famous one, so his parents couldn’t have known about it.
It’s a different matter if parents knowingly give their child the exact same name as someone famous, and it’s a weird choice to say the least.

God imagine the amount of “chamons” he had to indure!

Beebumble2 · 09/04/2025 07:15

DH has a well known / respected singers name. They were both christened it back in the day. When DH opened a Twitter Account he had loads of requests asking him to post his play list and other music related requests! 😂

Not cool to post a kid's full name, age and private medical info

HuffleMyPuffle · 09/04/2025 07:57

My brother's best friend at school was called Tom Jones and I've never thought of the connection until seeing it brought up here 🤣

forgotmyusername1 · 09/04/2025 08:26

I dealt with someone through work who said his name was Mr G Wood. When I got his passport his name was Ged Wood. He was in his 50's and this was not long after the Jedward thing. Poor bloke

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/04/2025 08:29

Decades ago my husband worked with a US national whose name was Randy Katz. Not a problem in the US, as I think randy is just UK slang.

Google Jedward

Yes, I know who Jedward are!

LookingAtMyBhunas · 09/04/2025 08:48

I gave a ticket for not wearing a seat belt to a Harry Potter once.

So you get why the name Ged Wood might have been embarrassing at the time…..

Lots of sniggering from parents at pick up etc.

Adults sniggering at children’s names. That tracks, and obvious where young children learn it from.

Auburngal · 09/04/2025 10:52

He must be the only Alan of his age.

I know plenty of young Allans. It’s a fairly common name in Scotland. Not everyone is in England

restingbitchface30 · 09/04/2025 17:57

My partner used to teach an Indiana jones. I found that a bit cruel. I used to be friends with a Karen carpenter. I find that a bit cooler though. Even cooler when she married a guy called Paul Rudd!

Santina · 09/04/2025 19:44

I taught a Grant Mitchell once, he certainly lived up to the name 🤣

stample · 09/04/2025 19:50

Knew an Alfie moon but he was born before the character came about in eastenders

Laura95167 · 09/04/2025 20:14

Could be an unfortunate coincidence depending on when the person got famous

Flozle · 09/04/2025 20:21

wordywitch · 08/04/2025 08:08

Not quite the same but a friend of mine named her baby the exact same name (first and last) as a character on a TV show that was very popular at the time, but because she didn’t watch it had no idea. The character was in prison as well. She was mortified.

Was it Deirdre Barlow?
